Wild otter and man become friends

Seppo Laamanen, 65, lives in a cabin in Punkaharju, eastern Finland.

One day, a small and malnourished otter showed up at Seppo’s door.

So he fed the starving otter.

Ever since, the man and the otter, whom Seppo named Iivari, became good friends. Iivari would visit the man every day.

Otters are among the coolest of animals IMO. Every time I watch one of these things I find myself saying “awww…”. I didn’t think I had it in me. Please don’t tell anyone, that would blow my cover as a Big Badass 🙂

I won’t tell anyone William. I feel the same way- these creatures are just too cute.
I watched White Fang last night and the wolf in the flick had me aching with his cuteness and. I just wanted to put my arms around him and look into his beautiful eyes.

Animals are exemplars of our better nature. With me lately it’s birds, their rituals, songs..such grace. Such inevitabilty. Having peeled off from the rat race I’m now decelerating to the point at which I can appreciate them. Ya know? In one of my recent hikes I saw a cow moose and two young ones. She saw me and withdrew into the woods and they followed. I often feel that I am intruding on their world which they allow me to do, but only as a guest. And thanks for keeping my little secret:)

Trying Birding. Buy a pair of binoculars, Sibley’s Bird Book for ID, and some audio recordings of Bird Songs in your area. You will be amazed at what you see & hear! If your in the NE, you will have some of the most beautiful birds of all, the Warblers heading your way to breed from South & Central America (their wintering grounds are also endangered)
And if we let them, they want to destroy all of our flora & fauna, and much more.

This book has been on my reading list for awhile.

Ring of Bright Water, written in 1959 and published on 12 September 1960, was about adventure and light and nature, set amidst an impossibly romantic setting. It is a book about a man who has escaped, and who has entered into a (meaningful) relationship with the natural world, and who has befriended an otter, two otters…

This is SO CUTE! This is also proof that most animals are better than most people…

Nice – it’s like having a pet without any of the responsibilities, other than feeding it.

OMG what a heart warming friendship. asking for nothing in return. up here in the great north woods of Maine the winters can be brutal on the deer and other animals. i have had as many as 7 waiting in the woods for me to come out with food.apples are their favorite. pretty much eat out of your hand. sad part is in november they are hunted within a few short years they are gone only to be replaced with a new herd. gods gift to me
