What is This? Raw Footage I took with Flip Cam

Rate this post

I was taking some videos in my backyard  last evening between 7:30-7:45 pm.  Altogether I took about 7 clips.  I didn’t use the last two in my project because there was something odd about them.  What the heck is this?  Science is NOT my bag!  I know it was the Summer Solstice yesterday.  Does it have to do with that?  Take a look and tell me what you think.  It happens 39 seconds into the video.

  1. Grannie,

Are you referring to the black dot that appeared inside the bright sun, with that straight bright-light vertical line from the black dot to the ground?

Maybe a camera artifact? Any photography experts out there?

Yes, that’s what I’m talking about. My neighbor’s friend is the local tv weatherman/helicopter traffic guy. I sent the clip to her and asked her to forward the clip to him. The black disc w/vertical laser -looking light was right over her house.

    • Grannie, I had seen this before and I think it is from artifact, possibly the result of pointing the camera directly at the sun and the light sensor being unable to adjust for the brightness, hope this puts your mind at ease.

Thanks, Tom! I wasn’t worried so much as curious. I did a websearch for photographic anomalies and couldn’t find anything that looked like mine. This one does and now, though I don’t really understand it, my curiosity is satsified!

        • I thought it might have something to do with lens flare and I came across that. I took photography in college but that was before digital photography so I guess it has to do with digital cameras.

I was filming to make a Christian music video and I didn’t want a “black sun” cropping up at the end of the video. What a clanker that would have been. LOL!

Now that I know, I can play around with that footage and some suitably creepy music. I already have a black cat to throw into the mix.
