Unsustainable – 49.5% of Americans don't pay income taxes

Today is the deadline to turn in your tax returns.
In honor of this black letter day, I’m re-publishing this post that was first posted two months ago.
If you want a quick answer to the question of why our national debt is nearly $16 trillion and the federal government keeps piling on deficits, this graph says it all. And yet, Obama’s solution is to tax even more the 50.5% of Americans who actually pay income taxes.

Chart of the Week: Nearly Half of All Americans Don’t Pay Income Taxes

Rob Bluey – The Heritage Foundation’s The Foundry – February 19, 2012
This year’s Index of Dependence on Government presented startling findings about the sharp increase of Americans who rely on the federal government for housing, food, income, student aid or other assistance. (See last week’s chart.)
Another eye-popping number was the percentage of Americans who don’t pay income taxes, which now accounts for nearly half of the U.S. population. Meanwhile, most of that population receives generous federal benefits.
“One of the most worrying trends in the Index is the coinciding growth in the non-taxpaying public,” wrote Heritage authors Bill Beach and Patrick Tyrrell. “The percentage of people who do not pay federal income taxes, and who are not claimed as dependents by someone who does pay them, jumped from 14.8 percent in 1984 to 49.5 percent in 2009.”
That means 151.7 million Americans paid nothing in 2009. By comparison, 34.8 million tax filers paid no taxes in 1984.
The rapid growth of Americans who don’t pay income taxes is particularly alarming for the fate of the American form of government, Beach and Tyrrell warned. Coupled with higher spending on government programs, it is already proving to be a major fiscal challenge.
“This trend should concern everyone who supports America’s republican form of government,” Beach and Tyrrell wrote. “If the citizens’ representatives are elected by an increasing percentage of voters who pay no income tax, how long will it be before these representatives respond more to demands for yet more entitlements and subsidies from non-payers than to the pleas of taxpayers to exercise greater spending prudence?”

  1. As Ken Rogulski publicized…

  2. Freakin ridiculous!!! What a nightmare! My poor children will be paying for these lazy, stupid ppl! {I don’t give a crap who gets mad about my wording…bring it on}

    • Seriously I think the far *stronger* f-bomb is appropriate for this situation though perhaps not this blog! I was seething over my tax situation knowing all these citizens and even illegal aliens are whoring around and popping out illegitimate kids and we have to pay for it all!

      • I agree that we shouldn’t be responsible for paying for those illegal immigrants and such. The problem is, the government decides to use taxpayer money on those illegal bastards anyway! We also shouldn’t be (and aren’t) responsible for the frivolous government spending overseas and domestically, which would still bury us in debt even if ALL Americans paid income tax! If you are mad about the taxes you pay, and don’t support the ridiculous gov’t spending programs, then quit complaining and stop paying taxes!! Don’t pay the government until they prove they can be responsible with OUR money. And you are not legally required to pay income tax anyway. Do your research.

  3. We are soon to be like Greece…

  4. The country is being destroyed from within. The Communists tried unsuccessfully to organize so they got into the education system and their philosophy is being taught in the schools. The entitlement mentality is inbred in America today. The American dream has become a nightmare.

  5. Relate that to elections! The 49.5% get the vote too!

  6. Good! Maybe the other 50% will wake the hell up and stop paying money to fund illegal wars that murder innocent humans while assuring the fat cat lazy bastard idiots who start the wars never actually fight the battle.
Most ignorant Americans do not even realize the internal revenue service is an illegal entity that was never made “law”.
Like always the American government “says so” … therefor most people do not question their own murderers.
FU*K Taxes – I am 42 years old and have worked since i was 18 and i have NEVER paid an income tax… and rest assure, i never will.
I refuse to give in to illegal tyrants.

    Dear Patriot,
Here’s how one conservative lawmaker summed up President Obama’s just released budget … “It’s a mockery of the American people.”
I’ve got an even better adjective … DECEPTIVE.
When Obama arrogantly announced that he would “reduce the deficit by $4 trillion” over ten years, he purposefully used the most deceptive language possible to disguise what is really happening.
    Here’s the truth.
Tucked away on page 245 of his budget, the truth of Obama’s budget is revealed. Over the next 10 years, he will be increasing the federal debt — the debt that you and I as taxpayers owe — by an unfathomable $11.189 trillion!
The rampant lies and deceit that this administration are passing off as truth, are speeding our nation down a path to certain destruction.
Our only saving grace is prayer!

  8. This is so unjust! Thank you for exposing the truth, Dr. Eowyn! Ultimately when all is said and done, Our Lord will judge the fraudulence!

  9. We’re so forked as a free republic it isn’t even funny anymore, as there is no way this trend will be turned around in time to truly matter.
$16 Trillion in debt my ass, as that figure is a government and media lie.
Not really sure there is even a difference between government and media anymore.
We are now over $134 Trillion in overall debt (and I have seen estimates that suggests even $200 Trillion), once you figure in unfunded liabilities and mandates that no one – not even the totally worthless repubes, seem to want to talk about.
I am not even sure God has that much money.
I suggest you start making your escape plans -If you haven’t already, I mean.
    No joke.

  10. Just sent off my return and $$$. 🙁

  11. What this family and our small business pays just makes me sick!!

  12. This is why it will be so difficult for conservatives to win elections. “A government that robs Peter to pay Paul will always have the support of Paul.” I fear nothing will be done until the bond vigilantes force the issue like they have in much of Europe. Politicians won’t risk much to lower our debt and they won’t change the tax code to make it more efficient and less progressive. Necessary change will likely only come because of a financial crisis.
