The teacher asked the class to use the word ‘fascinate’ in a
sentence.Molly put up her hand and said,
“My family went to my granddad’s farm, and we all saw his
pet sheep. It was fascinating.”
The teacher said, “That was good, but I wanted you to use
the word ‘fascinate, not fascinating.”
Sally raised her hand and said, “My family went to see Rock
City and I was fascinated.”
The teacher said, “Well, that was good Sally, but I wanted
you to use the word ‘fascinate.”
Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher hesitated. She
had been burned by Little Johnny before.
She decided there was no way he could damage the word
‘fascinate’, so she called on him.
Johnny said, “My aunt Gina has a sweater with ten buttons,
but her Tata’s are so big she can only fasten eight.”
The teacher sat down and cried.

  1. Golly, that boy has a way about himself, doesn’t he? If you and I did half of what he does, why we’d… well, fascinate!

    • Wait, it gets WAY better! My family has a very old Latin-Italian name, Fasciani, which has the same Latin root word, fasce, that is one’s “face”.
Of course, it’s also the root for our English ‘fascia’, as in “I want to buy a fascia board.” I got my BC Dept of Labour Journeymen Carpenter Certification in 1974, passed the first time, only 1 in 3 do.
OK, now here’s the scary part: I’ve gone into my supplier lumberyards on many occasions and, when asked by the clerk how to spell my name so s/he can look up my account, I say in my typical way, “Fasciani, just like fascia board, then ‘ni’ on the end.”
98 out of 100 times, “How do you spell ‘fascia’?” comes back at me!
WOW, I didn’t know I was at Safeway. I thought this was a lumberyard, my mistake!
