U.S. Catholic bishops changed meeting venue from $600/night luxury resort only after 22 bishops threatened not to attend

Last week, from June 11 to 14, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had their bi-annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.

The meeting was originally scheduled to take place at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Santa Barbara, Calif., a $600-a-night resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean, owned until recently by Catholic multimillionaire Tim Busch.

The luxury hotel boasts that each of its 358 guest rooms and suites has “a balcony overlooking the ocean or resort gardens.”

Only when the 22 bishops of California threatened not to come to the Ritz-Carlton did USCCB leadership change the venue to the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel where a single-occupancy one-bed room goes for about $179 a night. (Source: Religion News

But the USCCB General Assembly did manage to create a system for reporting sex-abuse violations committed by bishops, albeit it took them TEN months to do that after the release in August 2018 of a 1,356-page, redacted version of the Pennsylvania grand jury report on child sex crimes by Catholic priests.

By a vote of 205 to 16 with 3 abstentions, the General Assembly voted to authorize the design of a third-party system for receiving confidentially, by phone or online, reports of possible violations by bishops. By a 220 to 4 vote with 1 abstention, the bishops voted in favor of committing to activate the third-party reporting system by no later than May 31, 2020.

I sure would like to know who the 16 dissenting bishops are.

Evidently there must be some parishes that are rolling in dough. The optics of Catholic clergy attending a meeting where the fees for housing are that astronomical is just outrageous. Yes, the beautiful gardens, and lovely swimming pools are very inviting, but how many Priests would actually be utilizing them? It is beyond troubling that a 100% consensus regarding implementing systems to report child molestation could not be achieved. Evidently, there are those who just wish to have things go on the way it has been for decades–with homosexual Priests preying on, particularly young boys. I would feel that Catholic’s… Read more »

Information like this gives a new layer of resonance to the annual “One Bread, One Body” campaign assessing parishes for contributions to running the archdiocese, which causes priests of poorer parishes such anxiety in raising the stipulated amount even though that amount may be less than for other parishes that are economically better off.

It’s getting to the point where I’d sooner trust a Democrat than a member of the Catholic clergy…

And to think it has been happening for so long and no one, NO ONE, has come forward denouncing all the abuse committed against the innocent children, talk about corruption! THe Catholic Church is experiencing a big decline in priesthood and parishioners, I don’t think the Catholic Church will ever recover.

I am utterly disgusted with this Pope. A NWO Pope! Every time he opens his mouth he puts his foot in it. He never shuts up either. I remember in the 80’s they were discussing this. They haven’t made any discernible progress. They never will until they root out all the queer bishops and priests and seminarians. They have a little “lavender club” that seems to be self-sustataining. It really chafes my hide when they do something extravagant like this. This is the sort of thing the Episcopal do. Well, they will have to pay for their hypocrisy. It’s going… Read more »

The Bishops think THEY are the deity. They have lost their way; if they ever knew it. Which I believe they have always been corrupt and sinful.

Good for those priests. Truly men of God who in this instance honored their vows.

The Catholic Church has always had this “optics” problem. When I was a kid the pastor of our church used to come around to visit in his new Cadillac. Most of the parishoners were poor mill workers. I remember thinking, couldn’t he make do with a Chevy? The Church has been infiltrated and infested with sodomites and (((luciferians))) over the centuries. The present pope is a walking blasphemy. Those of us who were raised Catholic can still hold tight to what was once The Church. I don’t think there is any turning it around at this point. Only Jesus Christ… Read more »
