Obama corruptWhy Team Obama Was Blindsided by the Bergdahl Backlash

Congratulations, Mr. President! And identical congrats to your sorcerer’s apprentice, National Security Adviser Susan Rice. By trying to sell him as an American hero, you’ve turned a deserter already despised by soldiers in the know into quite possibly the most-hated individual soldier in the history of our military.

I have never witnessed such outrage from our troops.

Exhibit A: Ms. Rice. In one of the most tone-deaf statements in White House history (we’re making a lot of history here), the national-security advisor, on a Sunday talk show, described Bergdahl as having served “with honor and distinction.” Those serving in uniform and those of us who served previously were already stirred up, but that jaw-dropper drove us into jihad mode.

But pity Ms. Rice. Like the president she serves, she’s a victim of her class. Nobody in the inner circle of Team Obama has served in uniform. It shows. That bit about serving with “honor and distinction” is the sort of perfunctory catch-phrase politicians briefly don as electoral armor. (“At this point in your speech, ma’am, devote one sentence to how much you honor the troops.”)

I actually believe that Ms. Rice was kind of sincere, in her spectacularly oblivious way. In the best Manchurian Candidate manner, she said what she had been programmed to say by her political culture, then she was blindsided by the firestorm she ignited by scratching two flinty words together. At least she didn’t blame Bergdahl’s desertion on a video.

The president, too, appears stunned. He has so little understanding of (or interest in) the values and traditions of our troops that he and his advisers really believed that those in uniform would erupt into public joy at the news of Bergdahl’s release — as D.C. frat kids did when Osama bin Laden’s death was trumpeted.

Both President Obama and Ms. Rice seem to think that the crime of desertion in wartime is kind of like skipping class. They have no idea of how great a sin desertion in the face of the enemy is to those in our military. The only worse sin is to side actively with the enemy and kill your brothers in arms. This is not sleeping in on Monday morning and ducking Gender Studies 101.

But compassion, please! The president and all the president’s men and women are not alone. Our media elite — where it’s a rare bird who bothered to serve in uniform — instantly became experts on military justice. Of earnest mien and blithe assumption, one talking head after another announced that “we always try to rescue our troops, even deserters.”

Uh, no. “Save the deserter” is a recent battle cry of the politically indoctrinated brass. For much of our history, we did make some efforts to track down deserters in wartime. Then we shot or hanged them. Or, if we were in good spirits, we merely used a branding iron to burn a large D into their cheeks or foreheads. Even as we grew more enlightened, desertion brought serious time in a military prison. At hard labor.

This is a fundamental culture clash. Team Obama and its base cannot comprehend the values still cherished by those young Americans “so dumb” [see “Note” below] they joined the Army instead of going to prep school and then to Harvard. Values such as duty, honor, country, physical courage, and loyalty to your brothers and sisters in arms have no place in Obama World. (Military people don’t necessarily all like each other, but they know they can depend on each other in battle — the sacred trust Bergdahl violated.)

__________

Note: On October 30, 2006, at a campaign rally for Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California, then Senator John Kerry (now Obama’s Secretary of State) told an audience composed mainly of college students: “If you make the most of it, study hard, do your homework and make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you can get stuck in Iraq.[For video of Kerry, click here.]

__________

President Obama did this to himself (and to Bergdahl). This beautifully educated man, who never tires of letting us know how much smarter he is than the rest of us, never stopped to consider that our troops and their families might have been offended by their commander-in-chief staging a love-fest at the White House to celebrate trading five top terrorists for one deserter and featuring not the families of those soldiers (at least six of them) who died in the efforts to find and free Bergdahl, but, instead, giving a starring role on the international stage to Pa Taliban, parent of a deserter and a creature of dubious sympathies (that beard on pops ain’t a tribute to ZZ Top). How do you say “outrageous insult to our vets” in Pashto?

Obama smiles as Bergdahl asks for Allah's blessingObama beams as Bowe Bergdahl’s creepy Muslim dad asks for Allah’s “blessing” (read more here)

Nor, during the recent VA scandal, had the president troubled himself to host the families of survivors of those vets who died awaiting care. No, the warmest attention our president has ever paid to a “military family” was to Mr. and Mrs. Bergdahl.

(I will refrain from criticism of the bumptious attempts to cool the flames of this political conflagration by Secretary Hagel: I never pick on the weak.)

What is to be done? Behind the outrage triggered by Team Obama’s combination of cynicism and obliviousness (Bergdahl was so ill we had to set those terrorists free immediately, without notifying Congress, but now he’s chugging power shakes in a military hospital . . . and all this just happened to come at the peak of the VA scandal . . . ), military members don’t really want to lynch Bergdahl. But they want justice.

Our military leaders need to rediscover their moral courage and honor our traditions, our regulations, and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. We need a fresh, unprejudiced 15-6 investigation (the military equivalent of a grand jury). We already know, as the military has known since the first 24 hours after Bergdahl abandoned his post, that sufficient evidence exists for a court-martial, but it’s important to do this by the numbers.

It’s hard to believe that the resulting court-martial would not find Bergdahl guilty of desertion (although there will be heavy White House pressure to reduce the charge to Absent Without Leave, or AWOL, status, a lesser offense). If he is convicted, I for one do not want him to go to prison. I’m sure he’s paid and paid for betraying his comrades, quite possibly suffering brutal sexual violence. But if he is found guilty, he needs to be formally reduced to the rank of private, stripped of all privileges and entitlements (the taxpayer should not pay for a deserter’s lifelong health care — Bergdahl’s book and film deals can cover that), and he should be given the appropriate prison sentence, which would then be commuted by the president. Thereafter, let Mr. Bergdahl go home and live with himself.

As for President Obama, how about just one word of thanks to the families of those fallen soldiers you sent out to find Bowe Bergdahl?

  1. Never in the history of our country have we had a man so unqualified to be President and Commander in Chief. Now they are jumping the gun and going after his platoon members. Calling them swift boaters and more. But, again jumping the gun and calling the traitor a man who served with honor.
The evidence is overwhelming and the intel the private group found on this traitor will come back and smack them between the eyes.
When will someone call this what it is….another aiding and abetting the enemy and be damn the troops. I think it will eventually come out this guy sitting in our WH is more Arab than black.

  2. Frankly, Barry Hussein Obastard doesn’t give a damn.

His “work,” such that it is, is nearing completion.

  3. The man that released the leaders of Al Qaeda needs to be tried for TREASON!

    • May I also add dereliction of duty and treason? I am sure as Ralph Peters said, there will be pressure to drop his charge to AWOL, which I pray to God they don’t get away with!!!! That would be a further insult and slap in the face to the families of the fallen men who were killed looking for him and to every active service member and veteran in this country and our allies.

I also think it was Bergdahl’s father (a complete textbook example of useful idiot) who had an agenda to coerce this government to free every single terrorist in Gitmo and he conspired with his son to go and join the Taliban.
If you look at his tweets, it’s all too obvious.

  4. So, @ parents (esp the father), our president, & Ms Rice…

Abraham Lincoln said it well: You can fool all of the people some of the time, Some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time……..

Mr. Obama & Company haven’t fooled anyone but themselves this time. Let them “spin” this until they vomit or pass out…..this dog ain’t goin’ to hunt no more. NONE of the people were fooled ANY of the time on this one. And, double slap in the face—perhaps if the active military overseas had been ALLOWED to vote (remember the military & absentee/remote voter “failures?”)…Obama wouldn’t have been reelected anyway. Now, here he is…2 years later, releasing the very men for which thousands died to detain/bring to justice for 9/11….in exchange for a deserter, a Taliban sympethizer (NOT unlike our own POS) who, by his desertion, set in motion deaths of many of his platoon members who were sent to search for him.

First, I agree w/some who’ve noted Obama is the president that NIXON had hoped to be….(& right now, on the whole, that is a huge INSULT to NIXON) & secondly….Obama has compromised the security of the United States of America. He’s bastardized his oath of office & turned us ALL over to the mercy of our sworn enemies…the very ones who killed 3,000 of us on our own soil, innocent civilians who did nothing more than show up for work, or board a plane one day in September, 2001. He has NOT upheld his oath to defend us, our Constitution (including the balance of power…which dictates that he upholds the laws passed by Congress—like the one he signed that said he’d have to give 30 days notice before he could do anything like he just did w/this prisoner exchange….& then he violated it right away…..). He committed treason. He should not only be impeached….the impeachment vote should be slam dunk: OUT THE TRAITOR…we’ve had 2 before–that came short of throwing the prez out of office: Johnson, Civil War aftermath abt allowing rebellious states back into the Union, & recently, with Clinton, a lie abt a blow job. Considering the historial context….trading an avowed traitor for 5 Muslim terrorists who planned & brought to fuition the deaths of civilian Americans on their own soil sort of out-weighs the blow job…maybe even outweighs the sins of bringing rebellious states back into a Union for which over half a million died for…..Just thinking a little deeply here…but it’s NOT that much of a dive to think this deeply…if you you get my drift….

  5. Excellent article. This morning CBS is already spreading the TRAITOR in the WH’s propaganda spin. LIARS AND TRAITORS ALL OF THEM. Never forget Terry Lankin. All the POC had to do was prove to the American people who he really is. IMPEACH and IMPRISON him NOW! GITMO is to good for him!

  6. Thank you Dr. Eowyn for this most interesting and important post. The scandals never end with this king. . .He ignored the applicable laws in this situation and even his liberal buddies are upset. God please help us!

  7. As I’ve written before, NOTHING the PoS or the Clintons do can surprise me in any way, as it’s NEVER for anything to help the increasingly beleaguered 90% of the populace, only for themselves and the wealthiest 10%.

    • Joseph, why are you making this a wealth issue? Are able-bodied people on Social Security Disability and Food Stamps part of the oppressed 90%? Are illegal aliens, with more pouring in by the day, part of the oppressed 90%? Are public unions like SEIU part of the oppressed 90%? How about angelic “If I had a son, he’d look just like” Trayvon Martin: Was he part of the oppressed 90%?

      • What I know from my own life and from what others who were intimate w/people such as the Clintons specifically in this case, is that the upper 10% are simply not in touch w/the rest of us, as apart from an occasional exception, they lack empathy or even a modicum of interest in us. Yes, this is a generalisation, but one that is all too often found to be true, if one looks into the lives of the rich & famous.

It’s not exclusively a wealth issue per se, rather that they have their own worldview, and it doesn’t include us, so they pass laws, create conditions and whatever else they require to favour themselves, regardless of the costs to the 90%.

In the Nineteen Sixties Dr Erich Fromm diagnosed politicos who were obsessed w/power as being people who are unable to love, so they fill that void w/power-seeking, manipulative activities. He wrote that people who have spiritually satisfying lives and are able to love rarely feel the need to become involved in politics, as their lives are fulfilled in mutually beneficial relationships, not based on power positions.

By the same token, I think there will always be a small percentage of politicos –say 10%– not inclined to pursue power or self-enrichment, who genuinely care about contributing to their society, but they’re a minority, thus the uphill battles in governance to get commonwealth solutions rather than ones directed to a few hundred corporations or favoured families.

Think Pelosi or Feinstein for typical self-serving behaviours, as well as the Clintons, etc. They are disdainful of us, who are merely useless eaters, as Kissinger famously remarked.
