The Gas Price Blues

a likely specimen found in Richmond, Virginia

To readers on the west coast this might look cheap, but keep in mind Virginia is a comparatively poor state. Many people in this particular neighborhood get by on minimum wage to the tune of 7 bucks an hour.
The other day I was in a hair salon, and one of the clerks (who wasn’t even waiting on me) started complaining about how bad business was in their building. She then blurted out that her personal finances were stretched to the limit, she was in talks to start staying with her mother, and she wished President Obama would get fired.
Shocked by her casual honesty with total strangers, I could simply stammer in reply that everyone in Washington ought to be fired.
When that kind of conversation happens in a place of business on a Friday night that used to be busy – it’s a sign that Washington has lost the rest of the country. And for me, it’s a sad reflection on the plight of many hardworking people in my community.
That’s what it’s like to live in Virginia in 2011.

Yeah. Speculators aren’t out there buying commodity calls because they want to destroy the economy. They’re motivated by a genuine belief that the price will keep fluctuating.
As more and more Americans start stocking up on food, that will start having a small but legitimate role in pushing prices up further. It’s unavoidable when people start buying hedges, whether physical or contractual.
The only way to stop it is to stabilize the price of that thing.

  2. At my local dollar store the owner told me he had the worst monthly total sales in Feb that he’s had in years. The DOLLAR store. Things are bad when you can’t even spare a buck.

  3. I SAY DRILL HERE DRILL NOW-SHOULD HAVE DRILLED LONG AGO. OPEN IT UP-GO ALL THE WAY.

  4. This recent price increase in gas just took the wind out of any recovery that was on the way.
People now stop driving and stop buying anything. What will they do next?

  5. WE CAN HAVE IT COMING IN A YEAR AND A HALF-GO NOW-CUT THE EPA OUT OF GOV.AND GET CORN,WHEAT COMING AGAIN ALSO,AS FAR AS MILK THE EPA HAS DESTROYED THAT ALSO, I SAY “BRING IT ON AND BRING IT ON NOW!”

  6. if we want to fix things we need to go back to very limited government, and the roots of our beginning. FARMS,RANCHES, raise our beef,swine,chickens,eggs-wheat,corn ect….. we have let the EPA shut it down. If someone moves into an area that stinks of cow shit! TOO BAD. shouldn’t of moved there in the first place. IT IS SINK OR SWIM TIME FOLKS-WHERE ARE YOU AT????
