Woman died after being denied ambulance because she was ‘still talking’

Fox News:  Swedish health authorities have come under criticism over the death of a woman whose repeated calls to emergency services were ignored because she was still able to talk.

Jill Soderberg, 22, died in her home in the town of Timra, 241 miles north of Stockholm, on January 20, 2011, shortly after she had placed her third and last call to SOS Alarm emergency services requesting an ambulance, news website The Local reported Tuesday.
However, every time she rang, as per procedure, operators connected her to Vasternorrland County nurses who deemed that she was not sufficiently ill for an ambulance because she could still speak.  “I can’t breathe,” Soderberg, who was suffering chest pains, told operators, according to transcripts of the calls. “I want you to come and help me.”
The operator considered her to still be communicating verbally and decided that she didn’t need an ambulance,” Jill Soderberg’s mother, Annika Soderberg, said.
The elder Soderberg said she had asked SOS Alarm to explain the logic behind refusing someone an ambulance on the basis that they were speaking.  “How could you even call for an ambulance in the first place?” she said, adding, “No one could answer that one.”
Annika Soderberg filed a complaint with Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare which concluded its investigation last week.  “In the call it shows that she was gasping for air, had slurred speech and chest pains. That’s a strong indication that an ambulance should have been sent in the first instance,” board member and report co-author Andrea Blomer told the national TT news agency.
While the report slammed Vasternorrland County authorities, it did not find fault with SOS Alarm because its operators are required to contact local health experts if they are unsure about what action to take.
An autopsy report found that Soderberg died from breathing difficulties caused by anxiety medication and muscle relaxers.
Let’s just hope that the SCOTUS ruling turns down Obamacare (and chances are good, fingers crossed).  Otherwise be prepared to see instances like this in our future.

  1. Time to tell about Dennis, my US Navy Medical Corps angel [REALLY!]
In early June 1960, I was 17 and about to graduate Bellevue, Washington HS in the week following. I cycled from my Lake Hills home to visit Steve Johnson, my best friend, in his Laurelhurst home in Seattle. All was well until I came to the expansion joints in the old Lake WA Floating Bridge. The very modest sign telling cyclists to dismount and use the sidewalk was posted on a member of the first arch, so one would already be in the danger zone before they read it. I believe that’s been changed since then. Let’s hope so….
The very narrow wheels of my Raleigh 8 speed road racing cycle dropped through the second set of joints [I travelled on an angle across the first set] and I went from 25 mph to zero in 1 second, landing mostly on my nose and L side of my face, unconscious, praise God! I would have been run over by the busy Saturday morning traffic but for the very quick-thinking of Dennis, a commuting Navy Medical Corpsman coming from Seattle, who drove his dark green, top-down 1947 Chevy convertible across two lanes of traffic and blocked my body to prevent it being run over by a lame driver. [Only a guy would recall the car!]
I awoke to find my upper body in his arms, cradled to reduce the pressure of my gushing blood. I was a mess and a half, believe me: nose broken, most of L cheek ground into pavement and two teeth pushed into lower L lip, amongst other problems. Dennis, 25, never twitched: he performed FLAWLESSLY, as if he were a battle-hardened medic from ‘Nam, where some of my friends had gone. He asked me how I was, where I was going, etc.. Then a private ambulance from the Seattle side pulled alongside Dennis’ Chevy, and the passenger attendant got out and came over to us.
“Got any money, kid?” he asked me. “It’s a $100 to go to the Swedish Hospital [closest one].” I had spare change. Dennis looked at this idiot and said “Never mind,” picked me up, carried me to his car, put me on WHITE leather seats, then drove me to the hospital. [Time for tears of gratitude and love for my angel! Lord, but I love our men and women in service!]
You have no idea how I worked to avoid putting my blood on the white leather! I think I was successful by using my shirt. Once at the Hospital, there was a Dr Carl Chism on duty/call, and he put my face back together, w/o asking questions about payment. Dennis disappeared after getting me there, and never seen again. Very sad for me to miss him.
Fortunately for me, my father’s Plumber’s Union had just the week before negotiated an agreement for a co-share medical plan for the plumber’s family, so I was covered. And good thing, too, because if I’d cost the old man money by my stupidity –which this was– be assured he would have gotten it out of me behind the woodshed! Still a good idea, IMO, for many of our currently ‘troubled youth’. Oh yeh, uh huh. Spoiled rotten kids.
Long story short: here in BC we have a Province-financed 911 Medical Emergency system, paid for by the profits from our state-owned liquor stores, which can be done by WA state as well. It’s a sensible use of tax money and benefits rich or poor equally. Think about it it: highly-taxed tobacco & alcohol sold by gubbmint can reduce the burden of the deficits these same drugs put on people.
And Dennis, wherever you are, you’ve been my angel ever since, and always will be: all love and blessings on you and yours!

    • My brother is a former combat corpsman and I can really seeing this happing, to this day. I’m just a former squid but know enough to help out.

  2. “its operators are required to contact local health experts if they are unsure about what action to take.”
HELLO!!!! So in the meant time someone could die while they are on the phone with a health expert!!!!! .

  3. What a great way to get paid without working… brought to you by single-payer gov’t healthcare.

  4. And this just in from those lovely Democrats…
“Dems Warn Of ‘Grave Damage’ To SCOTUS If ‘Obamacare’ Is Struck Down,” by Sahil Kapur, Talking Points Memo, 28 Mar 2012
How nice of them to remind us why we have a system of checks and balances, and do not rely upon the good will of unlimited power to control itself.

  5. This one from an email put out by the League of American Voters:
    Dear Friend:
Are Obama and his friends taking you as a fool?
You have to wonder what they really think about the intelligence of the American people.
Obama repeatedly has out-and-out lied about his healthcare plan.
Here are just 5 of the big whoppers.
Lie #1: ‘You Keep Your Doctor, You Keep Your Insurer’
    This is a complete fabrication.
Under plans Obama has backed in the House and the Senate, almost any business can opt their employees into the “public option” — the government health plan.
That means you could lose your insurer. And if your doctor is worth his salt, you’ll lose him or her as well.
Why? Because great doctors probably will not want to get the very low rates the government will pay private doctors who are part of the new government system.
So, without your consent, you very easily could lose your insurer and your doctor.
Lie #2: The Elderly Will Not Face Rationing or Medicare Cuts
    More baloney.
In fact, just last week, The New York Times, a very liberal and very pro-Obama newspaper, admitted that fears of rationing for elderly patients are “not irrational.”
The truth is that Obamacare would almost 50 million new patients to government care.
Who would pay for it. You would!
Seniors on Medicare will be the first hit.
Here’s what the Times reported: “Bills now in Congress would squeeze savings out of Medicare, a lifeline for the elderly, on the assumption that doctors and hospitals can be more efficient.”
This means that faceless bureaucrats will decide the type and quality of your care.
It is a very dangerous thing to give your life and well-being over to government bureaucrats!
Imagine if you or a loved one is older than 80 years and critically needs heart surgery.
Instead of getting the heart procedure, you or that loved one could be informed that you are simply too old.
We at the League of American Voters have been warning of this danger and have a powerful TV commercial exposing the risks to seniors.
Lie #3: There Will Be No “Death Panels.”
    More lies.
Sure, they don’t call them “death panels” in the legislation, but that’s what their job will be.
These committee members will set guidelines with which faceless bureaucrats will make decisions about you and your healthcare.
They will decide who lives and who dies. They decide who gets critical procedures and expensive medicines.
Again, according to the New York Times, the Democratic plans call for saving money by creating new oversight committees.
The Times says that Medicare and insurers would be expected to follow “advice from a new federal panel of medical experts on ‘what treatments work best.’”
Again, this very liberal paper concluded: “The zeal for cutting health costs, combined with proposals to compare the effectiveness of various treatments and to counsel seniors on end-of-life care, may explain why some people think the legislation is about rationing, which could affect access to the most expensive services in the final months of life.”
Lie #4: The Obama Plan Contains Costs
    Absolute nonsense.
The Obama plan will cost more than $1 trillion in new federal outlays, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
This past weekend, Sen. Joe Lieberman claimed that most of this cost comes from adding 50 million people, currently uninsured, to the government health system.
But as Lieberman pointed out, we just don’t have the money to do this right now.
You can add only so many people to the government system by cutting medical care to seniors on Medicare and raising taxes.
Democrats clearly plan to do both.
Lie #5: Illegals Are Not Covered by Obamacare
President Obama has stated time and again that illegal aliens are not covered under his new plan.
Still, Democrats say they want to add almost 50 million uninsured. Yet almost one-quarter of these uninsured are illegal aliens.
None of the Democratic plans excludes illegal aliens.
In fact, when Republicans proposed an amendment to the House plan to block illegals from getting free government healthcare, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her minions soundly defeated the motion.
Many, many lies are emanating from Washington today.
This is why the work of the League of American Voters is so critical now.
Dick Morris, the famous Fox News analyst and campaign strategist, says the League is the No. 1 organization today fighting Obamacare.
“Every American who wants to stop Obamacare should join with the League,” Morris says. “They have the best strategy to stop it from becoming law.”
Just two weeks ago, the League’s powerful new TV ad went on the air.
Thanks to your help, it’s already running in 12 states — and it is affecting millions of people.
We believe it is one reason some Democrats are starting to retreat.
But our job is not done.
    We must fight the lies.
We must expose the dangers of Obamacare to all Americans.
