The Chicago Way: Mayor Lightfoot defends police Superintendent Johnson after FOP issues “no confidence” vote against him

Imagine this: You are out having a couple of drinks. You get into your car and start driving. You suddenly feel “ill” and pull over. You then fall asleep.

A cop then comes up to your car window and finds you sleeping behind the wheel.

You think that cop is going to let you go on your merry way or are you going to get a DUI?

Well, if you live in Chicago and are the police superintendent – it’s your lucky day!

On October 19, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson was out at dinner and had a “couple” drinks. He then pulled over and fell asleep at a stop sign while driving home. Johnson says the incident was related to a change in his blood pressure medication. More details from The Guardian:

“Superintendent Eddie Johnson did not mention having anything to drink when he spoke to reporters on Thursday night and a department spokesman said the officers who responded to a 911 call reporting a man asleep in a car at a stop sign did not observe any signs of impairment.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot told the Chicago Sun-Times on Friday she agreed with Eddie Johnson’s decision to request an internal affairs investigation.

“It was the right thing,” Lightfoot said. “We’ll see how that plays itself out.”

The police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said: “While we have no indication of impropriety at this time, this question can only be answered by the internal affairs investigation.”

Guglielmi said on Thursday: “There were no charges of intoxication, no information of intoxication as far as I know.”

Johnson told reporters on Thursday evening he was driving home at about 12.30am after having let his driver go home, when he felt lightheaded. He said he pulled over and fell asleep.

Officers allowed him to drive home and did not administer a breathalyzer or a field sobriety test. Johnson said officers do such tests only when a motorist appears impaired or officers smell alcohol or cannabis.”

A week after the incident, Mayor Lori Lightfoot was coming to his defense. According to the Chicago Tribune, Lightfoot defended Johnson’s tenure as Chicago’s top cop saying “he has sacrificed a tremendous amount for the city” even as a watchdog probes the mysterious incident where police last week found him asleep in his car.

The same day Lightfoot expressed her support for the “top cop,” the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police issued a vote of no confidence against Johnson.

Johnson boycotted the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference on the 26th where President Trump delivered a well-received speech to law enforcement. Johnson cited “personal values” as the reason he chose to boycott saying, “I have to take into account, not just my personal feelings about it, but our core values as a city. We are nothing without trust and with some of our communities under siege, it just doesn’t line up with our city’s core values along with my personal values.”

No wonder Chiraq is such a mess. With “leaders” like this, nothing will every change in that city.

Chicago the City of Brotherly Love, really? Those two are really united, except when it comes to drugs, gangs, murders, there they separate from one another, no “brotherhood” there.

Chicago is run by a Democrat mob. There is nothing honest about them.

DCG . . . Great article! Frankly, if this man has lost the confidence of the rank and file officers under him, then it is ridiculous for the mayor to prop him up by her vote of confidence But then, what else can you expect in Chicago?????

Nothing new here and it is not just a Chicago that this happens. I knew a cop that used to get so drunk he could barely stand. This shining example of an officer would get stopped and literally fall out of the car with his badge in hand. Suck the sauce all you want Eddie, Lori will give you a pass again and again…

There’s a reason he’s derogatorily called “Special Ed” by some of the rank-and-file & retired Chicago PD…
