The Bible's Other Creation Narrative

Rate this post

We all know the 7 day creation narrative in Genesis.

But there is another profound and revealing creation narrative in the first chapter of John’s Gospel

1In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  1. And John confirms that narrative of Creation in The Revelation of Jesus Christ:
    These things say the Amen, the Faithful and True witness, the Beginning of the creation of God;
I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot: I would you were cold or hot.
So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue you out of my mouth.
Because you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and know not that you are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
I counsel you to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich; and white raiment, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness do not appear; and anoint your eyes with eyesalve, that you may see.
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
    Revelation 3:14-22

  2. I’ve always liked this very much, partly because I only learned NT Greek, not Hebrew, so it was more acessible. I had an Interlinear Bible at the time, so I could still deal w/the Hebrew, but it wasn’t as open for me [maybe ‘user-friendly’ is another way to put it].
As well, the Greek makes it clear that the Logos [which is the key here] is both an on-going supreme operation & entity, so that gave me the idea of what I called the ‘continuous Creation’ which followed upon the original one. Since that time more than 25 yrs ago I’ve found others using the phrase, so that reinforced my perceptions.

    • Joseph, I think you have hit on a notion that is very true . . . that there is a state which we can call “continuous Creation.” Why would we ever think that the creations of our God stopped with the creation of this Earth alone. If we are his spirit children . . . why would he all of a sudden stop using his powers of creation, in creating spirits to inhabit bodies. Also He would have need of globes wherein His children would have a home, much like Earth is our home. Most of us have for ourselves viewed the condition that in creative person–they don’t just all of a sudden stop creating. It is their nature to use their creative powers (that is until such time as declining health causes their creative powers to decline.) This could not be said of The Creator.
Go Bless you Joseph . . . I always love the thoughts you bring to us.

  3. Aw schucks, Auntie Lulu, you’re gonna make me blush pretty soon, and I’ve only done that once before in my life!

  4. The Book of John puts the Lie to the “theory” of Evolution once and for all: All of Creation has been made by a Creative Intelligence, and God Has Done that with a Purpose: For that Creation to give Him Glory.
God ALWAYS Acts with a Purpose. Whenever we act, we’re trying to get something. But when God Acts, all He can do is to give it all away—to communicate. Our God is a Loving God. All the Devil can do is to lie and destroy!

  5. TD . . . where did you find that exquisite picture of Mary, Joseph, and the Christ child. I have never seen it before–I am blown away by the beauty!

  6. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
    one of my favorite verses…..
