Thanksgiving is a religious holiday to thank God, not another occasion for white guilt

Thanksgiving is one of the most beloved holidays in America.
But in the hands of “progressives,” public schools and the MSM, Thanksgiving has long become yet another occasion for white guilt. If you want an illustration, see my 2010 post, “Thanksgiving card from my liberal friend“.
But did you know that unlike other secular holidays like Labor Day or the Fourth of July, the Thanksgiving that you think is a secular holiday is actually a national holiday that is explicitly religious in nature?
As shown in the quotes below, Thanksgiving was instituted as a day to thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed on America.

In 1789, in his first year in office, President George Washington called for a day of Thanksgiving because —

“it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor.”

In 1815, President James Madison issued a proclamation for “a day of thanksgiving and of devout acknowledgments to Almighty God for His great goodness.” After Madison, however, Thanksgiving reverted to a regional celebration in New England for 48 years.
In a proclamation in the midst of the Civil War on October 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official national holiday. Here is the full text of his proclamation:

“The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.
“In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.
“Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.
“No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
“It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.
“In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
“Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.”

Last year, Americans undertook the most divisive presidential election in our lifetime, only to see the electoral divisiveness metastasize into an undeclared civil war of remitting viciousness, even death threats against a duly elected President and his supporters.
On this Thanksgiving, to echo the words of Lincoln at the conclusion of the Civil War, we,

with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.”

We of the Fellowship of the Minds also take this occasion to thank all our readers and especially our regular commenters who contribute so much to this little blog with their intelligence and righteous outrage.

Psalm 100

A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all you lands;
serve the Lord, with gladness;
come before Him with joyful song.
Know that the Lord, is God,
He made us, we belong to Him,
we are His people, the flock He shepherds.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving,
His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him, bless His name;
good indeed is the Lord,
His mercy endures forever,
His faithfulness lasts through every generation.

God bless you, and may God bless America,

  1. What is sad is that people call Thanksgiving “turkey day”. They eat the turkey and spend the whole day watching sports. Seems people aren’t thankful for anything any more.

    • Watching the NFL, and doubly so on this family day, is stark evidence of core values moral rot, when formerly bedrock American men sacrifice principle to self-gratification, and do it in front of their own boys whom they could be outside tossing the ball with. As for their children’s future and as a matter of principle, they might as well be watching porn with the kids in the family room today, maybe excusing it on the grounds they disapproved in some meaningless way. What’s possibly even worse is that the game is excruciatingly boring but for the fake crowd noise and constant interruptions diverting attention from the fact that in 3 hours 15 minutes there isn’t much more than 15 minutes of contrived “action” sent in from the sidelines.

  2. The Enemies Destroy Themselves
    2 Chronicles 20:20-22
They rose early in the morning and went out to the wilderness of Tekoa; and when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, put your trust in the LORD your God and you will be established. Put your trust in His prophets and succeed.” When he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who sang to the LORD and those who praised Him in holy attire, as they went out before the army and said,

    “Give thanks to the LORD,
    for His lovingkindness is everlasting!”

When they began singing and praising, the LORD set ambushes against the sons of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; so they were routed.

  3. Thank you. I’m truly grateful for all of you.

  4. OhMyGosh, Dr.E, = I really wish that you’d re-run that article from Nov.2010 – Liberal friend’s comment on T-G – along with all the reader responses.. Your response was very good, – but I sensed that You held back most of what you would have liked to say.. A Friendship can “Open You Up” = but they can also “Shut You Down..!!”

  5. Deuteronomy 12:7 – And there ye shall eat before the LORD your God, and ye shall rejoice in all that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households, wherein the LORD thy God hath blessed thee.

  6. Thank you for reminding us what it is all about. Hope yours is wonderful.

  7. Whoever is President gets death threats and there is electoral divisiveness metastasize into an undeclared civil war. It’s been like that for a while.
Thanksgiving represents the ultimate betrayal. The Indians helping the Puritans survive the winter only to see the start of their genocide……white guilt? Ask yourself, why none trust the white man the world over……

    • It is Thanksgiving, food stamp offices are closed for the holidays!!!

    • Well, there you go. If I were you I’d “take a knee” in protest and refuse to eat Thanksgiving dinner because of dew White devils. We all know that, before white people, those “Indians” enjoyed absolute peace and prosperity, unfettered by any idea of “racism”.
And we all know how glorious Africa was before it was “ruined” by white people. Of course if those white devils hadn’t come, they’d still be scratching out “food stamps” on the back of rocks, not having invented paper as yet.
Yes, it’s a pitiful world. It’s all because of the white devil. If it weren’t for them everything would be free and it would rain whiskey and jewelry. The quicker the white devil disappears the faster those entitlements will come to pass. Of course, nobody knows who’ll pay for them.

      • might as well stand put your hand on your heart cause the world is a better place because the white man came and civilized the savages by raping, enslaving and committing genocide
They stole the inventions, ideas and music and passed it as their own; introduced the cold virus and kill off more savages broke every promise because of greed and gold fever…..

Happy Thanksgiving, folks! May the Almighty continue to forgive our transgressions and Bless us as we return to His Arms.
We have MUCH to be thankful for, especially this year. Let’s not forget to give Him praise as His righteousness delivers us from the evil ones.
    (Love the last picture…lmao!)

  9. I, for one, have so much to be thankful for. Each and everyday God has given me the strength to live my life according to my efforts and my believes. I am thankful for all that surrounds me and further. My life is and has meaning because of HIM. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you FOTM.

  11. I was a bit sad that there was only 9 people assisting at Mass this morning. We have so much for which to be thankful, yet we cannot take a moment on this special day to show gratitude to Our Lord who gives it to us.
I hope folks at least say grace before dinner.

  12. I am grateful for all that I have and that I woke up today.
A life without gratitude is a horrible disgrace of a life. A life without gratitude is a life of haughty pride, unworthy to stand in the presence of Almighty God, and an affront to one’s fellow man.

  13. Speaking for myself, I’m just thankful I’m still waking up on the right side of the grass.

As the first 6 letters of Thanksgiving tells us…we give thanks to our Lord….a time for humility and gratitude.
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1Chronicles 16:34
