Women’s March event cancelled because organizers concerned of event being “overwhelmingly white”

This is what happens when identity politics drives your agenda.

From Fox News: Organizers of a Women’s March rally slated for Northern California next month have canceled the event, saying they were concerned that participants would have been “overwhelmingly white.”

In a news release, organizers for the march in Eureka – about 270 miles north of San Francisco – said Friday the “decision was made after many conversations between local social-change organizers and supporters of the march.”

“Up to this point, the participants have been overwhelmingly white, lacking representation from several perspectives in our community,” the news release continued.

According to Census Bureau data from July, Humboldt County, where Eureka is the county seat, is 74 percent non-Hispanic white.

“I was appalled to be honest,” Amy Sawyer Long told the Washington Times. “I understand wanting a diverse group. However, we live in a predominantly white area … not to mention how is it beneficial to cancel? No matter the race people still want their voices heard.”

The rally, which had been planned for Jan. 19, would have commemorated the third anniversary of the original Women’s March, which was held Jan. 21, 2017, the day after President Trump took office. The group said it is exploring shifting the rally to March to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The Women’s March movement has been marred by complaints from some black and Latina women, who’ve raised concerns that their input is often disregarded or overlooked, the New York Times reported.

The cancellation of the march in California follows a previous one in Chicago.

Women’s March organizers in that city cited high costs and limited volunteer hours as reasons for nixing the annual rally, the Chicago Tribune reported. “There’s no march, there’s no rally,” said Sara Kurensky, Women’s March Chicago board member. “We’re going to provide ways for people to organize and take action in their local communities.”

Meanwhile, the Women’s March national leadership has faced accusations of anti-Semitism because of ties to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. In a speech in February, Farrakhan praised a Women’s March co-President Tamika Mallory and declared “the powerful Jews are my enemy.”

Leaders of Women’s March Inc. have come under scrutiny for not condemning Farrakhan’s rhetoric fast enough. The Nation of Islam is considered a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Earlier this month, a Washington state chapter of the Women’s March disbanded in protest because of the national group’s links to anti-Semitism.

Marches and rallies are still planned for Jan. 19 in Washington, D.C., and dozens of other cities nationwide and internationally.

Louis Farrakhan leads “death to America” chant in Iran

Shocker, not.

From Fox News: Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a notorious anti-Semite who recently compared Jewish people to termites, led a “Death to America” chant Sunday during a solidarity trip to Iran.

Farrakhan’s trip came ahead of the Trump administration’s re-implementation of U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic on Monday.

Speaking to law school students at the University of Tehran, the 85-year-old Farrakhan said “America has never been a democracy,” and also led a “Death to Israel” chant at the end of his talk, according to Iranian news agencies.

“Today, I warn the American government that sanctioning Iran is a big mistake,” he said at a meeting with the Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council, Mohsen Rezaei. Farrakhan noted his belief America is conspiring against Iran.

Farrakhan’s trip coincided with the 39th anniversary of the 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, when more than 50 American diplomats and civilians were held hostage for 444 days. The incident kicked off the Islamic Revolution, and Farrakhan told an Iranian audience that black Americans should be considered among the revolutionaries. The infamous activist cited the actions of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeni, who ordered the release of black Americans among the 1979 captives.

Video of Farrakhan leading a “Death to America” chant once again sparked calls for Democratic leaders to distance themselves from the controversial figure. Several prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, have interacted or taken pictures with Farrakhan.

Donald Trump Jr. slammed Democrats Monday on Twitter. “When will the democrats disavow this guy? Answer: NEVER,” Trump Jr. tweeted.

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz called on “all decent people” to condemn Farrakhan after he tweeted he wasn’t anti-Semite but “anti-termite.”

“Nazis use the word ‘termites’ to dehumanize Jews and accuse them of destroying everything good about the world,” Dershowitz explained on “FOX & Friends.”

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, known as America’s Rabbi, also called on leaders to condemn him. “A new low for arch Jew-hater Farrakhan,” Boteach tweeted. “Who has heard of an American going to a foreign country and chanting ‘Death to America?’ Where is Bill Clinton who appeared with him recently, and Barack Obama, photographed with him, and Cory Booker to condemn him?

Farrakhan has previously said “powerful Jews are my enemy” and “white folks are going down.”

Linda Sarsour, a Women’s March co-founder and pro-Palestinian activist, has repeatedly praised Farrakhan and refused to condemn him. Tamika Mallory, another Women’s March leader, called him the “GOAT” or “Greatest of all time,” and served as a national organizer for his “Justice or Else” rally in 2015.

Israeli activist, Hen Mazzig, tweeted out video of the “Death to America” chant. “Nothing, Linda Sarsour?” Mazzig wrote.

Ben & Jerry’s unveils “Pecan Resist” ahead of mid-term elections

I have never bought Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. And I never will.

From USA Today: Ben & Jerry’s is launching a new flavor, Pecan Resist, which the company made to promote activism in the U.S.

The Limited Batch flavor – chocolate ice cream with white and dark fudge chunks, pecans, walnuts and fudge-covered almonds – is part of the company’s campaign to “lick injustice and champion those fighting to create a more just and equitable nation for us all,” it said Tuesday.

Ben & Jerry’s is donating $25,000 to each of four organizations working on behalf of people of color, Native Americans’ environmental justice and women – Color Of Change, Honor the Earth, Women’s March and Neta.

“The company cannot be silent in the face of President Trump’s policies that attack and attempt to roll back decades of progress on racial and gender equity, climate change, LGBTQ rights and refugee and immigrant rights – all issues that have been at the core of the company’s social mission for 40 years,” Ben & Jerry’s said in a statement.

The White House could not immediately be reached for comment.

The ice-cream maker made the announcement in the National Press Club’s First Amendment Room in Washington, D.C.

Ben & Jerry’s, which Unilever acquired in 2000, has used its sweet treats to promote its social justice agenda before. For example, Chubby Hubby became Hubby Hubby in 2009 to celebrate same sex marriage in Vermont, Chocolate Fudge Brownie was temporarily renamed Food Fight Fudge Brownie to support GMO labeling and EmpowerMint in 2016 was used to promote voting rights, the company said.

A half-cup serving of Pecan Resist contains 300 calories, 20 grams of fat and 25 grams of sugar, according to the flavor’s nutrition label.

A quick note for flavor-watchers: Pecan Resist was previously called New York Super Fudge Chunk. The flavor is sold only at participating Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops and through the company’s website.

Bay Area artist and activist Favianna Rodriguez designed the Pecan Resist pint. The carton reads, “Welcome to the resistance. Together, Pecan Resist!…We celebrate the diversity of our glorious nation & raise our spoons in solidarity for all Americans. Take a stand & join those on the front lines.”

A URL on the package directs people to information about the four organizations to which Ben & Jerry’s donated money.

Dipayan Biswas, a University of South Florida professor of marketing, said the new flavor will foster loyalty from some customers and prompt others to boycott Ben & Jerry’s – like what happened to Chick-fil-A in 2012 after CEO Dan Cathy spoke out against gay marriage (yeah, that boycott really did in Chick-fil-A, didn’t it? /sarc).

“Paradoxically, it makes good business sense. Brands, like politicians, often do well when they’re more polarizing,” he said. “A lot of people hate them for that. That’s fine. They get loyalty from other segments.”

But Biswas said he doesn’t know if the ice cream flavor will effect the change the company wants it to. “Research shows words have subliminal impact,” he said. “When you see the brand name, in this case, it can subtly remind people of certain things. I’m not sure it will (inspire) action.”

Make it stop: Obese model goes nude for "female empowerment"

Feminism is not a girl’s friend. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, “positive” or “empowering” about being obese.
Tess Holliday is a model who is 5’5” and weighs 260 pounds, according to bodymeasurements.orgPer the CDC BMI calculator, her BMI is 43.3 – she is obese. Her normal weight range should be 111 to 150 pounds. How in the world did having almost 50 percent body fat become celebrating “body positivity?”
Tess is now posing nude, again, under the guise of “empowerment.”
You know what would be more empowering? Keeping your clothes on and getting control of your obesity.

From Yahoo: Over the weekend, more than one million people are estimated to have joined in the Women’s Marches around the world. Nick and Tess Holliday took a stand of their own for female empowerment: The body positivity activist and her photographer husband each shared a nude photo of Tess on their Instagram accounts to advocate for respect for women, no matter what they look like or how they’re dressed.
“Women deserve respect, whether they are completely naked or covered head to toe,” Nick wrote on Saturday. “I’m too sick to march, so I worked on this photo we shot a few weeks ago to post today. No alterations to her body or bare face have been made. #effyourbeautystandards #nomakeup #unretouched #womensmarch.” On Sunday, Tess reposted the photo and her husband’s caption, adding, “Repost my hubby @nickhollidayco ?.” In the black and white photo, Tess’s bare back is to the camera. She wears her long hair in a ponytail and stares off into the distance, with lush Californian hills as the photo’s backdrop.
The 32-year-old plus-size model has previously shared nude photos to make other important statements. Last August, she posted a photo in which she wears nothing but sheer underwear as she gazes at the camera. The caption explains that the photo reminded Holliday of her own quote from her 2017 book, The Not So Subtle Art of Being A Fat Girl: Loving The Skin You’re In. “It goes: ‘Fat people have sex. A lot of it. And it’s really fucking good.’ That’s all ????✌?,” the caption reads.
In 2016, while pregnant with now 19-month-old son, Bowie Juniper, Holliday posed nude for The Telegraph. “Just because we’re plus-size doesn’t mean we have to prove that we’re healthy, just as someone who is smaller than us or average size doesn’t have to prove they are healthy. We should be able to exist in our bodies. I am technically healthy but my body is no more valid than someone’s who isn’t,” she said in the accompanying interview with The Telegraph. “I was 7 months pregnant in these photos & loved every moment,” Holliday added in her May 2016 Instagram post about the Telegraph shoot.

In denial: Hollyweird execs blame Rotten Tomatoes for their demise

Between the first weekend in May and Labor Day, a sequel-stuffed period that typically accounts for 40 percent of annual ticket sales, box office revenue in North America totaled $3.8 billion, a 15 percent decline from the same span last year. To find a slower summer, you would have to go back 20 years. Business has been so bad that America’s three biggest theater chains have lost roughly $4 billion in market value since May.
Ready for the truly alarming part? Hollywood is blaming a website: Rotten Tomatoes.
“I think it’s the destruction of our business,” Brett Ratner, the director, producer and film financier, said at a film festival this year.
Some studio executives privately concede that a few recent movies — just a few — were simply bad. Flawed marketing may have played a role in a couple of other instances, they acknowledged, along with competition from Netflix and Amazon.
But most studio fingers point toward Rotten Tomatoes, which boils down hundreds of reviews to give films “fresh” or “rotten” scores on its Tomatometer. The site has surged in popularity, attracting 13.6 million unique visitors in May, a 32 percent increase above last year’s total for the month, according to the analytics firm comScore.
Studio executives’ complaints about Rotten Tomatoes include the way its Tomatometer hacks off critical nuance, the site’s seemingly loose definition of who qualifies as a critic and the spread of Tomatometer scores across the web. Last year, scores started appearing on Fandango, the online movie ticket-selling site, leading to grousing that a rotten score next to the purchase button was the same as posting this message: You are an idiot if you pay to see this movie.
Mr. Ratner’s sentiment was echoed almost daily in studio dining rooms all summer, although not for attribution, for fear of giving Rotten Tomatoes more credibility. Over lunch last month, the chief executive of a major movie company looked me in the eye and declared flatly that his mission was to destroy the review-aggregation site.
