NY Black & Puerto Rican lawmakers’ nonprofit organization failed to pay school taxes

Al Sharpton approved.

From NY Post: Share this: A nonprofit run by state lawmakers that spent $1 million on annual scholarship-fundraising galas over two years but gave zilch to needy minority students also failed to pay school taxes on its Albany building, The Post has learned.

The New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators, which puts on a lavish three-day “Caucus Weekend” of parties and workshops in Albany every February, owes $12,275.07 in unpaid Albany school taxes for 2016 and 2018, according to public documents. The figure includes $1,747 in accumulated interest.

The group, founded by minority Assembly members in 1985, bought the three-story townhouse on South Swan Street for $200,000 in 1994, public records show. The group uses the first floor as an office, and rented out the rest of the building for $3,400 in the 2016-2017 tax year, federal filings show. The property is located just minutes from the state Capitol.

On Thursday a woman showed up to staff the charity’s office at 12:45 pm and shooed a Post reporter away when he began asking questions. “There’s no one here to talk to,” she said, slamming the door and letting out an exasperated, “Lord, have mercy!”

One former lawmaker who was a member of the association said she had never been to the building but was told it was the group’s “party house.”

Powerbrokers like former Mayor David Dinkins and ex-state Comptroller Carl McCall sit on the group’s board — but refused to comment and did not return messages, respectively.

Meanwhile, The Post obtained federal tax documents that confirmed the association gave out no grants in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 fiscal years.

In the latest tax form available, on the line specifying “grants and similar amounts paid” the group wrote “0” for fiscal 2016. On another page, where grants were to be listed for the four fiscal years, the last two fiscal years were left blank.

The group insisted that scholarships had been given out in 2016 and 2017 but refused to provide The Post any cancelled checks or the full names of scholarship recipients. Instead, it handed over a single sheet of paper listing a total of $20,950 doled out to 34 students listed by first name in 2016. It listed $5,250 for 13 students ID’d by first name for 2017.

But the sheet of paper was not part of the federal tax filing and the totals were not reflected on the return. The leadership refused to address The Post’s questions about these inconsistencies.

Donors are not happy about the vanishing student grants. “Money raised for children’s scholarships should go for scholarships,” said Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, which has sponsored the group’s events.

Corporate sponsors and unions, including AT&T, Verizon, ConEd and New York State United Teachers, pay up to $50,000 for a “Plantinum Package” for the weekend. It includes tickets to workshops and speeches, but also cocktail parties and concerts where they rub elbows with Albany’s political elite.

The weekend ends with a lavish dinner that is supposed to raise funds for scholarships for minority youth. “I just sign the checks they give me to sign,” said Westchester Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, the organization’s longtime treasurer, when quizzed about the missing scholarships. “We have a lot of bills associated with the events.”

While students went without scholarships for the last two fiscal years, the group spent an accumulated $1,058,973 in expenses.

In fiscal tax year 2016-2017 it spent a total of $518,222, including $283,526 on fundraising, $100,750 on “management,” $39,639 on office expenses, according to its most recent filing to the IRS, which the group’s chairwoman, Brooklyn Assemblywoman Latrice Walker, made available to The Post last week following multiple requests.
Walker became chair of the organization in October 2017, taking over from Queens Assemblywoman Michele Titus, who headed the group between 2015 and 2017.

A spokeswoman for Walker, who is running for Public Advocate, said that she has already “eliminated superfluous expenses and cut spending” at the nonprofit. She also hired a new executive director and is requiring that the group submit to annual audits, the spokeswoman said.

After The Post expose last week, state Attorney General Letitia James said she was “troubled” by the findings.

Smile! You are being watched by your cable TV

cable box

Cheryl K. Chumley reports for The Washington Times, June 17, 2013, the cable TV companies have acquired a new technology that enables them to peer directly into television watchers’ homes and monitor viewing habits and reactions to product advertisements.

The technology would come via infrared cameras and microphones embedded in digital video recorders (DVRs) or cable boxes, which will enable the cable companies to watch and analyze viewers’ reaction (what they do and say) to televised ads. The cable companies then use the data collected to target specific advertisements to the particular household.

Rep. Mike Capuano (D-MA) and Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) have introduced a bill, the We Are Watching You Act, to prohibit the technology on boxes and collection of information without consumer permission. The bill would also require companies that do use the data to show “we are watching you” messages on the screen and to explain just what kinds of information is being captured and for what reasons.

The two Congressmen explain in a press release that “A patent application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office by Verizon notes the technology could detect a range of viewer activities. According to the patent application, the set-top device will be able to distinguish ‘ambient action … of eating, exercising, laughing, reading, sleeping, talking, humming, cleaning’ and more.”

Congressman Capuano stated: “This may sound preposterous but it is neither a joke nor an exaggeration. These DVRs would essentially observe consumers as they watch television as a way to super-target ads. It is an incredible invasion of privacy. Given what we have recently learned about the access that the government has to the phone numbers we call, the emails we send and the websites we visit, it is important for consumers to decide for themselves whether they want this technology. Think about what you do in the privacy of your own home and then think about how you would feel sharing that information with your cable company, their advertisers and your government.”

For his part, Congressman Jones stated: “Allowing this type of technology to be installed in the homes of individuals without their consent would be an egregious invasion of privacy. When the government has an unfortunate history of secretly collecting private citizens’ information from technology providers, we must ensure that safeguards are in place to protect Americans’ rights.”

Current law is silent on these devices. The We Are Watching You Act will require both an opt-in for consumers and an on-screen warning whenever the device is recording information about consumers.

Big Brother's secret NSA Data Center in Utah

1984H/t FOTM’s hrmfc

Three days ago, no thanks to our useless State Controlled Media here in America, a UK paper, The Guardian, reported that the Obama regime is exploiting Section 215 of the Patriot Act to secretly collect every overseas, domestic and local phone call and email (called “metadata”) logged by Verizon Business Network Services. Verizon Business is one of America’s largest telecommunications and Internet providers for corporations.
The Guardian‘s discovery broke the dam.
A new report reveals that, via a new classified program called PRISM, the NSA and FBI are directly tapped into central servers at nine U.S. internet firms, in order to provide constant monitoring of audio, video, photos, emails and documents as well as connection logs.
That, together with past reports by Forbes, Atlantic Wire, USA Today, The New Yorker, and the Wall Street Journal, should lead Americans with even a half-functioning brain to conclude that our every phone call (land and cell), email, credit card transactions, bank transfer, and travel record are being tapped and recorded by nameless faceless spooks in the federal government.
Former National Security Agency (NSA) crypto-mathematician Bill Binney confirmed that “the agency now stores copies of all e-mails transmitted in America, in case the government wants to retrieve the details later” and that the NSA “reportedly has the capacity to intercept and download, every six hours, electronic communications equivalent to the contents of the Library of Congress.”
So where are all the mountains and mountains of “metadata” being stored?
In the Utah Data Center — a heavily fortified $2 billion compound in Bluffdale, Utah, about which I’d posted 14 months ago, on March 19, 2012, in “2013: The end of privacy in America.” There, the NSA will intercept, store, and analyze your every email, cell phone call, Google search, parking receipt, credit card purchases, and more. The construction is expected to be completed by September of this year, but it looks like the Data Center is already up and running.
Below are photos of the Utah Data Center, taken by the AP’s Rick Bowmer, June 6-7, 2013 (source: Real Clear Politics).
Just remember: Your taxes are paying for this — to the tune of $80 billion a year! We are paying for our own hangmen.

Update:

A friend who works for the Australian government in defense writes in an email: “There’s about $30m worth of power management and generation sitting in those shots.  It’s the equiv of providing power to almost 600,000 people. I would imagine that Chinese imagery analysts are having a field day poring over imagery provided free of charge. Stalin’s comments about getting free rope to hang their enemies springs to mind.”

And It Took A Whole Day. "It's BUSH'S Fault"!!!

DEM TALKING POINT: IT’S BUSH’S FAULT!

US Press Blames George W. Bush for Obama‘s Unprecedented Eavesdropping.

———————————My Head Hurts ~Steve~————————–
[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xjFHwJfoKcw]
https://www.rushlimbaugh.com      June 06, 2013
RUSH: Have you seen the big news according to the mainstream press?  What do you think the big news is in the mainstream press?  No, it’s not Verizon.  This Verizon story, which we’re gonna get into, by the way, folks, sit tight.  I can’t do it all in the opening monologue.  This Verizon story — and I don’t think it’s just Verizon.  I think that’s just what we know.  But it’s broken by the UK Guardian.  The American media hasn’t broken a single Obama scandal.  The American media hasn’t taken the lead on any of the four major Obama scandals.  They’re just playing follow the leader.
Glenn Greenwald is the guy who wrote the story for the UK Guardian, and he got a leak from somewhere in the Justice Department. Somebody in the government had to leak it to him and they probably leaked it to others in the Drive-By Media in this country who are not interested.  And, in fact, I wasn’t gonna get into this now, but since Snerdley brought it up, our old buddy, Ron Fournier, the former bureau chief of the AP and White House correspondent, now works at the National Journal.
We have in the Obama administration — there’s nobody even close to the violation of privacy and civil liberties, nobody even close.  They can talk about Bush here, but nobody compares to what Obama’s done. In fact, folks, as you know, I read the tech blogs.  And I don’t mean to beat you over the head with that, but we have new people tuning into this program each and every day. I’m sorry if some of this is repetitive or redundant, but it’s quite necessary.  And in all these tech blogs, they just love Obama.
They have bought the myth. They drink the Kool-Aid that Obama’s the greatest civil libertarian, that Obama’s into privacy, that Obama’s just the greatest liberal that’s ever been — and they can’t believe this.  They just can’t believe that Obama would do this! They hated Bush for doing this! They can’t believe that Obama did this.  I don’t expect this to change anything, but our buddy Ron Fournier has this Verizon story with the NSA monitoring.
It’s not monitoring.  What they’re doing is this: They have demanded that, for three months, Verizon turn over the records of every phone call, what is called the “metadata.”  The metadata is the phone numbers, the length of time of each call, who originated the call, but not the contents (supposedly).  The contents are not part of what Verizon has to turn over.  The metadata is analyzed with very various algorithms. They it put through computer, analyze it, and come up with a data set.
Then if there is anything suspicious, the contents might be subpoenaed or requested.  But it is massive.  It is every phone call that Verizon handles. Every phone call!  If you call Domino’s on your Verizon cell phone, that call is being turned over to the NSA. Every phone call.  There’s nothing like this that has ever happened.  And the media, they just can’t believe it, either.  So our buddy Ron Fournier writes: “Welcome to the Bush-Obama White House — They’re Spying on Us.”
Welcome to “the Bush-Obama Era…”  Whose name is first in this story?  Bush! And it’s not just Ron Fournier.  It’s all over.  F. Chuck Todd at NBC says this is all Bush’s fault.  If Bush hadn’t been the guy that started this, Obama and Holder would not be doing it themselves.  (I kid you not.)  “Welcome to the era of Bush-Obama, a 16-year span of US history that will be remembered for an unprecedented erosion of civil liberties and a disregard for transparency.
“On the war against a tactic — terrorism — and its insidious fallout, the United States could have skipped the 2008 election.”  We coulda left Bush in, and everything would have been the same.  I mean, this is utterly embarrassingly shameless.  To bend over backwards or forwards or to pretzel yourself in whatever perverted position is necessary to include George W. Bush in this?  But that’s what they’re doing, because it just can’t be Obama’s fault.
It just can’t be!
They think they are Obama.  They think they’re the same culture, the same education, the same value system, the same pedigree, the same worldview, the same age. All of it! They think they are Obama, and they wouldn’t do anything like this. So it has to be some hidden, sinister force that is tugging Obama in this direction that’s totally against his own instincts — and it has to be that Bush paved the way to make it possible! Anyway, we’ll have more details on this the program unfolds.
But that’s not the big news in the media.  The big news in the media is Paris Jackson has been rushed to the hospital after an apparent suicide attempt, and the Drive-Bys have been exemplary in dropping all the nonsense in the news to give us minute by minute updates even though there aren’t any.  Now, if you don’t know who Paris Jackson is, then congratulations. You’re officially a high-information voter.
But since we are in the midst of our outreach to the low-information voter here at the EIB Network, I thought I’d better lead with the news that matters most to them and to the low-information news media.  That is that Paris Jackson, Michael’s daughter, tried to commit suicide out in California.  But they saved her.  She’s okay, and everything is cool.
RUSH: I want to focus on the NSA collecting phone records of millions of Verizon customers every day.  I don’t know that it’s probably just Verizon, but I’ll tell you what: This is the first time that any of this has come up under the Obama regime.  That’s not because Obama hasn’t been doing this.
I have no doubt that Obama has been collecting phone records and data and information on people from the get-go — and I have no doubt because I know liberals, folks.  I know how they are.  I know what liberalism is.  I know that they love exuding power and using it over people.  So I have no doubt that Obama has conducted operations like this on a far more massive scale than George Bush ever did.  The Drive-By Media today is typified by Ron Fournier’s piece: Oh, my God, look what Obama and Bush have been doing!  (In fact Bush’s name appears first in all these stories.)  Look what Bush and Obama have been doing! Oh, my God! How can this possibly happen?  Bush and Obama!
In fact, grab audio sound bite number three.  This is F. Chuck Todd: Unprecedented Obama surveillance is George Bush’s fault.  This is from the Today show this morning.
TODD:  This is part of a secret surveillance — domestic surveillance — program that was first launched during the Bush administration, and in order to do this court order, the Obama administration is essentially exploiting a part of the highly controversial Patriot Act.
