Transgender denied access to women’s restroom

KGW:  A transgender customer who identifies herself as a woman says she he is being discriminated against by some Hazel Dell (Washington) area bars because they won’t let her him use the women’s room.

Norma Ballhorn recently changed her his name from Norman, and is taking hormone therapy medications. But anatomically, Ballhorn remains a man.

The retired steelworker has filed a complaint with the Washington State Human Rights Commission, against Legends Food and Fun, and is considering filing complaints against two other establishments. “What they’re doing, by me not being able to use the ladies room, is discriminating against me,” said Ballhorn.

At Legends, server Sabrina Brenneise said they have no problem with Ballhorn’s transgender identity. “It’s the fact that she’s still a boy and she wants to go in the woman’s restroom and use the woman’s room with the stall opened, with her skirt hiked up and standing up, like a guy would, and that makes it kind of an issue,” Brenneise said.

Brenneise said Ballhorn became aggressively upset when told not to use the women’s room. Ballhorn denied standing up while using the restroom and of becoming aggressive, and said she he even tried to comply. “But I was not comfortable going into the men’s room because I don’t trust some of these guys in the bars, they get to drinking — they might think I look good and want to try something,” said Ballhorn.

An analyst with the Human Rights Commission said there is no specific state law regarding transgender individuals and restroom use, but the commission will look at broader freedom from discrimination laws as it investigates the case. Investigations can take from four months to a year to complete.

I worked at a place where a man (dressed as a man yet wearing makeup) used the women’s restroom – standing and facing the toilet.  I can say that as a woman I don’t want a penis in a public women’s restroom.  And I’m pretty sure moms with young girls don’t want men in there either. If a man is allowed to enter women’s restrooms dressed as women, how can we prevent pervs from dressing up as women to get their jollies?

What is the APA's real agenda?

Transgender advocates seek new diagnostic terms

Chron.com (AP) — Does a woman who strongly believes she was meant to be a man have a mental condition or a medical problem? Is a man who cross-dresses in need of psychological help? What about a boy who pretends to be a girl in make-believe games and chooses only female playmates?
The nation’s psychiatric establishment is wrestling with these questions, among others, as it works to overhaul its diagnostic manual for the first time in almost two decades. Advocates have spent years lobbying the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to rewrite or even remove the categories typically used to diagnose transgender people, arguing that terms like Gender Identity Disorder and Transvestic Fetishism promote discrimination by broad-brushing a diverse population with the stigma of mental illness.
“The label of mental defectiveness really places a burden on trans people to continually prove our competence in our affirmed roles,” Kelley Winters, a Colorado scholar who has helped lead the push for changes, said.
Although the association’s new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is not scheduled to be printed until the end of the year, the updates are taking shape after three rounds of proposed changes. Professionals who have been part of or closely observing the amendment process say the latest wording, while not going as far as many advocates wanted, respects the broader shift in society’s understanding and acceptance of what it means to be transgender since the last major revision of the manual was published in 1994.
“All psychiatric diagnoses occur within a cultural context,” New York psychiatrist Jack Drescher, a member of the APA subcommittee working on the issue, said. “We know there is a whole community of people out there who are not seeking medical attention and live between the two binary categories (of male and female.) We wanted to send the message that the therapist’s job isn’t to pathologize.”
The most symbolic change under consideration so far for the manual’s fifth edition, known as the DSM-V for short, is a new name for Gender Identity Disorder, the diagnosis now given to adults, adolescents and children with “a strong and persistent cross-gender identification.” In the manual’s next incarnation, individuals displaying “a marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender” would be diagnosed instead with “Gender Dysphoria,” a term that comes from the Greek word for emotional distress.
While the shift may seem purely semantic, switching the emphasis from a disorder that by definition all transgender people possess to a temporary mental state that only some might possess marks real progress, according to Dana Beyer, a retired eye surgeon who helped the Washington Psychiatric Society make recommendations for the chapter on “Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders.”
“A right-winger can’t go out and say all trans people are mentally ill because if you are not dysphoric, that can’t be diagnosed from afar,” Beyer said. “It no longer matters what your body looks like, what you want to do to it, all of that is irrelevant as far as the APA goes.”
Persuading the psychiatric profession to redefine who and who does not qualify for its care has historical precedent as a civil rights issue. In 1973, the APA, responding to pressure from the gay homosexual and lesbian community, concluded that same-sex attraction alone was a normal part of human experience, not an illness.
Although it took another 14 years for all conditions related to homosexuality to be lifted from the DSM, the earlier shift is regarded as a major milestone in the gay homosexual rights movement, one that paved the way for gays homosexuals to adopt children, get married and serve in the military.
Like gay homosexual men and lesbians before them, transgender people have seen the APA’s language cited to their disadvantage. Dan Karasic, a San Francisco psychiatrist who has offered suggested changes to the DSM-V through his affiliation with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, cited a Utah case in which he has been asked to prepare expert witness testimony involving a transgender woman who is at risk of losing the children she fathered before her transition.
“The argument is that one criteria for terminating parental rights is if one parent has a severe, chronic mental illness that might be harmful to the child,” Karasic said. “A lawyer is apparently using that to argue that because the person is trans and has a diagnosis of GID, she should have her parental rights terminated.”
But while there are parallels, achieving what the APA did for gays homosexuals four decades ago is more complicated for people who identity as transgender, an umbrella term that encompasses transsexuals, cross-dressers and others whose self-concepts otherwise do not align with the male or female label they were given at birth. Unlike sexual orientation, the accepted protocols for treating many patients expressing profound discomfort with their given gender call for medical intervention.
Since at least the 1980s, for example, a diagnosis of Transsexualism or Gender Identity Disorder has been used by doctors, mental health professionals and a growing number of health insurers to justify access to hormones or surgery for patients who decide to physically transition to a new sex. Eliminating it from the DSM-V therefore could make it more difficult for self-identified transsexuals to qualify for treatment unless a sex change is someday recognized as a physiological condition.

Read the rest of the story here.

There’s a reason I only highlighted just one sentence from this story. Why the need to call out what “right-wingers” say?  How does Beyer know all right-wingers believe this?  How does Beyer know that no liberals might say this?
What is the agenda of the APA?  To truly help transgenders? Or is it an agenda to make those who disagree with abnormal behaviors be defined as haters? My guess: as with any “progressive” idea, it’s designed to label conservatives as hate-filled, intolerant, and ignorant people.

Woman fired for wearing fake penis

This takes the prize as the Weirdest News of the Day.
A female worker at a Pennsylvania snack food factory is suing the company for firing her because she wore a fake penis to work while she considered a sex change.

The UK’s Daily Mail reports, Jan. 13, 2012, that Pauline Davis, 45, claims she was fired from J&J Snack Foods Corporation because she wore the prosthetic attachment to the factory in Moosic, Lackawanna County where she worked as a line inspector.

Lawsuit: Pauline Davis is suing J&J Snack Foods, pictured, over claims she was fired from her job for wearing a prosthetic penis to work while considering a sex change

Ms. Davis first filed a complaint in March 2010 with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission office in Philadelphia, claiming gender and gender-identity discrimination, reports the Philadelphia Daily News.
According to the lawsuit, Davis had confided in her co-workers about the fake penis. The co-workers, in turn, allegedly passed the information onto management who promptly fired her.  Her attorney, Lalena Turchi, insisted the fake penis was concealed and “in no way interfered with her ability to do her job”. The suit also claims a male employee undergoing hormone treatments and female clothing was treated more favorably.
Davis is seeking back pay, damages for suffering and humiliation, and punitive damages.
The New Jersey-based J&J company — which manufactures soft pretzels, slushies, frozen pops, cookies, churros, and pretzel dogs — did not immediately return a request for a comment.

The website Reelmagik.com (note it’s the occultic “magik” instead of “magic”) is selling a 6.2″ long prosthetic penis (weight: 11 oz.; 6″ girth at widest point!). Here’s the blurb:

“This prosthetic penis was created to visually enhance the sexual organ of transgender post-op patients.  We were approached by a client who had recently had the 1st stage female-to-male surgery, and was dissatisfied with the results.  Instead of opting for a 2nd surgery, in which skin taken from other sections of the body would be used to build up the sexual organ, they wanted a prosthetic that would give the appearance of typical male genitalia.  We came up with a solution that would enable the client to wear the prosthetic without the need for cumbersome straps or belts, as well as the option to be flaccid or aroused.   We inserted a plastic flexible rod into the center of the prosthetic, that allowed it to be bent in almost any position.  The prosthetic would be glued to the skin, instead of being “strapped on”, allowing for a sense of realism.  The choice of material would also enhance the realism of the prosthetic.  The properties of a unique silicone allowed for a “gel-filled” prosthetic.  The prosthetic has a very soft, yet durable outer skin, with a gel-like fleshy interior, that feels very much like an actual penis.  To achieve this, the silicone is not simply poured into the mold and filled.  Silicone is painstakingly hand poured into the mold one layer at a time (each layer allowed to set up before the next is poured), building up multiple layers, each layer having a different durometer (hardness/softness) until the desired flesh-like consistency is achieved. This allows the outer skin layer to be “pulled up”, similar to foreskin on an actual penis.  The new 3D scrotum also benefits from this material, allowing for firm testes floating in a near-liquid gel.  An extremely detailed paint job, as well as the addition of hand-punched synthetic hairs add to the extreme realism of this product.  This product is also available without the flex rod.  For additional information regarding the use of this product, as well as warranty & shipping info, please see our FAQ PAGE

Reelmagik offers a “basic” and an “advanced” model. The Basic Prosthetic Kit contains:

  1. High quality gel-filled 6” silicone prosthetic (optional embedded plastic flex rod)
  2. Standard paint job (see basic prosthetic photos below)
  3. 2oz bottle of Cleansing spray
  4. Application and Care Pamphlet

Alas, the kit does not include adhesive, which will cost you extra. 🙁
A week ago, singer Cher’s female-to-male transgender offspring, Chas (née Chastity) Bono announced that s/he is saving pennies ($40,000) to pay for a metoidioplasty procedure. As explained by Bono:
“It’s a procedure that uses what you already have down there, which has grown larger from the testosterone. You end up with a smaller phallus than with the phalloplasty, but it’s fully functional, it gets erect, and the sensation is all there.”
Bono says s/he expects the eventual willy to be about 3 inches long.
Maybe Bono should go the less expensive, less painful, and longer prosthetic route that former snack food worker Pauline Davis took. JMHHO: Just my humble helpful opinion!

Alex Jones Calls Janet Napolitano a Man. LOL

Of late, transgenderism is very much in the news, what with Cher’s daughter, er, son Chas Bono being a contestant in Dancing With the Stars, as well as the unending series of news stories on a transgender Girl (or is it Boy) Scout, the transgender gay man/lesbian, the lesbian couple’s transgender kid, etc. etc.
Given the seeming ubiquity of transgenderism, what Alex Jones said on his radio show a week ago is certainly timely.

Janet Napolitano, manly woman or girly man?

Sterling Allan reports for Before It’s News, Oct. 22, 2011, that Jones, in his live interview with Bob Chapman on the October 21  Infowars radio show, stated outright that Janet Napolitano, head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, “is a guy masquerading as a woman” and referred to Napolitano as “he” and “Mr.”
Here is an excerpt of Jones’ interview with Chapman, beginning at time stamp 12:17:

Jones: “Why is Janet Napolitano, why is he, as a Man, so bold to even admit that to Congress. …”

Jones: “You know, Janet Napolitano, he says he doesn’t like being criticized by us.”

Jones: “He’s a man, he can take it.”

Jones: “What kind of person to you think Mr. Napolitano is?”

Chapman: “I’d rather not say, because I know what you know, and I’m not going to put it on the air.”

Jones: “I mean, Mr. Napolitano”

Chapman: “Spies everywhere”

Jones: “I’m convinced that Mr. Napolitano is a guy masquerading as a woman, and not doing a very good job of it.”

Chapman: “Ah… You’re probably right, because you’re right about most things.”

Jones: “Hold on a second, Jaren was saying something about Mr. Napolitano; what was that?”

Jones: “Alright, I don’t usually stoop to humor, but at a certain point, I’m getting tired of it.”

Wikipedia’s entry on 53-year-old Napolitano says that she’s unmarried, has no children, is an avid basketball fan, and had a mastectomy in 1998 because of breast cancer.

I'm confused…

The "husband and wife", er...transgender lesbians

Two men who divorced their wives, came out as gay, became transgender lesbians, now Marry after one has a sex change

The Daily Mail:  A pair of transgender lesbians today told of their joy at becoming man and wife, and also wife and wife, on the same day – after one had a sex-change.
Jenny-Anne Bishop, 65, formerly called Paul, and Elen Heart, 68, who was once named Alan, initially got together as a male gay couple in 2004.  The pair, who are both divorced and have five grown-up children between them, lived together in Clwyd, Wales, for six years as transgender lesbians.
But the couple decided against surgery due to the associated risks at their age until last year – when Jenny-Anne went under the knife for a gender reassignment op.  Father-of-two Jenny-Anne went on to have a breast augmentation procedure this January followed by facial feminization surgery.  The couple have now officially tied the knot as ‘husband and wife’ after opting for a private civil ceremony in North Wales.

The "groom" is in the red dress

Retired graphic designer Elen, who takes herbal hormones to make her appearance more feminine, took on the role of groom and wore a silky red dress and bright red high heels.  The couple refer to father-of-three Elen – who started living as a woman in 2004 – as the ‘groomness’.
They were officially announced as husband and wife in front of four close friends, who attended as witnesses.  The retired newlyweds then had a gay wedding service at the Metropolitan Community Church in Manchester, where transgender friend Gabrielle was their bridesmaid.
Jerry-Anne, who has a granddaughter, added: ‘The law has seen us go from a gay couple – to a lesbian couple – to a heterosexual couple who can get married, but basically we are just two people who love each other and wanted to publicly declare and celebrate our relationship.  ‘We want to encourage other transgender couples to celebrate their relationships and uniqueness.’
I’m still confused…

Another transgender child…

I wrote about the 11-year-old boy who is starting a sex change.  Also the 4-year-old boy’s desire to dress up as a princess for Halloween. Now another story about a 7-year-old boy who wants to be a girl.

Girl Scouts Rejects, Then Accepts, Trans Kid

At 7 years old, Bobby already knows he's a girl

Edgeboston.com: The Girl Scouts has courted controversy by initially refusing membership to a transgender child, though that stance was later reversed.  “Bobby identifies as a girl, and he’s a boy,” the mother of the 7-year-old, Felisha Archuleta.  Archuleta told the news station that her child, Bobby Montoya, who was born anatomically male, had identified as a girl since about age 2.
Archuleta indicated that Bobby’s family has dealt with the child’s gender expression by doing what medical authorities recommend: Allowing Bobby a choice of clothing, among other gender identity markers.  Archuleta told the media: “He’s been doing this since he was about 2 years old. He’s loved girl stuff, so we just let him dress how he wants, as long as he’s happy.”
But not everyone is prepared to accept that a child built like a boy can be a girl psychologically. Bobby has encountered bullying at school; he told the media that “It hurts me and my mom both” when people make disparaging remarks. (I just want to note here:  kids can be cruel in school.  Doesn’t matter what you have going on – overweight, pimples, skinny, freckles, etc. – you will undoubtedly get teased and /or bullied.)
The issue of transgender kids is a complicated one, as Archuleta discovered when she took Bobby to join the Girl Scouts. Bobby ’s older sister had already joined up, and Bobby was excited to follow suit.  The individual with whom Archuleta interacted refused Bobby membership in the Girl Scouts.
“I said, ’Well, what’s the big deal?’ ” Archuleta recounted. “She said ’It doesn’t matter how he looks, he has boy parts, he can’t be in Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts don’t allow that [and] I don’t want to be in trouble by parents or my supervisor.’ Bobby expressed dismay, telling the media, “It was like somebody told me I can’t like girl stuff, and I have to change my name to something else.”
But the Girl Scouts quickly issued a statement to indicate that Bobby’s rejection was not a reflection on the organization as a whole–and to announce that the child would be welcomed into the fold after all.
I was a Girl Scout in my youth.  I never would have wanted a boy in my group as it was “girl time”.  I would have been extremely confused as to why he didn’t join the Boy Scouts.  I wonder how these Girl Scouts will feel?
And I do have to wonder, in all the cases I wrote about – including this one, the fathers appear to be MIA (they are not mentioned in the articles).
