In the 2008 presidential campaign, despite his murky personal history of Marxist friends and associates, a junior U.S. senator of only two years named Barack Hussein Obama was elected to the presidency of the most powerful country on Earth.
Obama’s election was due in no small part to Ted and Caroline Kennedy, who sprinkled their “Camelot” stardust on the political neophyte with their enthusiastic endorsement.
He was just using you, Caroline
Writing in the New York Times, Caroline Kennedy — the only surviving child of former President John F. Kennedy — delivered this rousing endorsement of Obama: “I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them. But for the first time, I believe I have found the man who could be that president — not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans.”
Three years into Obama’s presidency, however, the same Caroline Kennedy now regrets her endorsement. She now calls Obama “a liar”.
Jonathan M. Seidl reports for The Blaze, May 14, 2012, that in an explosive new book The Amateur, author Edward Klein asserts that the Kennedy family was bitterly divided in 2008. While Ted and Caroline went for Obama, Robert Kennedy Jr., son of the former Attorney General, and his sisters Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Kerry Kennedy, were supporters of Hillary Clinton.
Fast forward to 2012. Caroline has undergone a transformation after several snubbings by the Obamas. She especially feels insulted by one particular snubbing, when a vacationing Obama refused to meet with her despite her home being in the vicinity near Martha’s Vineyard.
Author Edward Klein quotes a family member on Caroline’s transformation:
“Through these [spies that the Kennedy family has in the Obama administration] and other people, Caroline heard back that there was a lot of nasty shit being said about the Kennedys by the president and Michelle. There were catty remarks about how badly the Kennedy women dressed, and how their houses were shabby and threadbare. Caroline got the impression that most of this negativity was coming from Michelle, who didn’t want the Kennedys to be part of the administration for fear that they would have too much influence over the president.
Gradually, Carline began to change her tune and side with Bobby and Kathleen [Kennedy Townsend] against the Obamas. Unlike Jackie, who was completely a-political, Carline is a liberal with a capital L. When Obama didn’t raise taxes to balance the budget, Caroline marked him down. In her eyes, he‘s a mess because he doesn’t follow the liberal bible on politics. More important, Caroline discovered that the Obamas didn’t give a damn about her support. […]
It really annoyed Caroline when comparisons were made by the media between Michelle and Jackie. Caroline had a word for such comparisons; she called them ‘odious.’ She really got annoyed. And when she began to fall out of love with the Obamas, love was replaced by outright scorn. Now she says things about Obama like, ‘I can’t stand to hear his voice any more. He’s a liar and worse.’”
Ethel Kennedy, “the matriarch of the family,” similarly felt scorned, according to Klein. He tells a story of her invitation — extended to the First Family — being ignored by the Obamas. She got so upset “that she went on a rampage inside her house, cursing the president and turning over furniture.”
And to top it all off, Caroline believes “that as a loyal Democrat, she has nowhere to go, no one else to possibly support except Obama” and “the Obamas know that she has nowhere else to go, so they see no point in being nice to her.”
From Edward Klein’s account, one concludes that what ticked off Caroline and Ethel Kennedy is not an ideological or political difference with Obama. What irks the two women is Obama’s “snubbing” them, that is, the two women’s vanity is pricked. In psychological parlance, Caroline Kennedy is now disillusioned about Obama because she has sustained a “narcissistic injury.”
Among the criterial attributes listed by the American Psychological Association’s Diagnostic Statistical Manual for the Narcissistic Personality Disorder are:
- has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements);
- believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions);
- is interpersonally exploitive, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends;
- lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others;
- shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes.
These attributes are descriptive of the Obamas (Barry and Moochelle), but also of the Kennedys.
Being “interpersonally exploitive,” Obama exploited Caroline Kennedy for her endorsement in 2008, after which he no longer has use for her. And so, he couldn’t even be bothered to visit Caroline when the Obamas summer-vacationed in the Kennedy playground, Martha’s Vineyard.
Good grief. Did Caroline actually imagine the Obamas to have gratitude or empathy? — to “recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others”?
In the end, in the eyes of Barack and especially Michelle, Caroline and the other Kennedys are nothing more than a bunch of privileged white people.
