Boys Will be Girls…

All dressed up...

15-year-old male Port Orchard student suspended for wearing dress to school

Kids today like to experiment with their dress, hair and clothing. But how far do they need to go?  Apparently as far as their mom will dare them to go.

A 15-year-old Sam Saurs was tired of hearing his mother complain about how her high heels were killing her feet. The two made a bet that he couldn’t last a day in high heels. Saurs not only donned the heels, but also a dress and make-up — and then he headed off to class at John Sedgwick Junior High in Port Orchard.

Dean John Richerson told Sam that he was distracting students and that he should go home for the day. Sam told the dean he thought he was being sexist. Richerson then suspended Sours from school for the rest of the year. That suspension was later reduced to 3 days yet Sam is unable to attend the 9th-grade dance and the school’s annual trip to Wild Waves.

Saurs said he was disappointed it got him kicked out of school. “If anything, it makes me want to be more out there and more spontaneous and crazy,” he said. Saurs has been suspended before for wearing makeup and hats to class.

His mother, Ivanna Leible, said she did not complain about the suspension since the school does have a ban on hats, but she said there is no rule against boys wearing dresses in the student handbook. “I found that very offensive. They told him he couldn’t be him,” said Leible.

So he wears the dress on a dare and the mom says “he couldn’t be him”? Would he have chosen to wear the dress were it not for her dare about wearing high heels? Why couldn’t he wear the high heels on a Saturday?  I suspect since he had been suspended before, he knew exactly what he was doing by antagonizing school officials. God help the children of our future.
