UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in ICU with COVID-19

On March 27, 2020, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, 55, said he’d tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory disease spawned from the Wuhan coronavirus. He went into isolation after a family member showed symptoms.

Lee Brown reports for the New York Post that cabinet officials were alerted in a video conference about Johnson’s deteriorating condition shortly before the public announcement, with one calling it a “truly shocking” moment.

Yesterday, after 10 days in self-quarantine, Johnson was admitted to the intensive care unit of London’s St Thomas’ Hospital, which directly overlooks Parliament.

Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove said the prime minister is conscious and being given oxygen, but is not on a ventilator and has not been diagnosed with pneumonia.

Johnson’s pregnant fiancée, Carrie Symonds, said she had been sick for a week at home with classic symptoms of the virus, but that she was “on the mend.”

Britain has no official post of deputy prime minister, but Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has been designated to take over temporarily. If Johnson could not return to his job, his Conservative Party would elect a new leader as prime minister.

Did you know that, until only 4 years ago, Boris Johnson had dual UK-US citizenship because he was born in New York City to English parents? In 2016, he renounced his U.S. citizenship to to demonstrate his loyalty to the UK.
