Political correctness: ‘Brown bag,’ ‘citizens’ are out at Seattle City Hall

liberal
Seattle PI: Public affairs officers at Seattle city agencies were advised in a recent memo that use of the phrases “brown bag” and “citizens” are potentially offensive, and that the words must be chosen.
“Luckily, we’ve got options,” Elliott Bronstein of the Office for Civil Rights wrote in a missive entitled “On ‘brown bags, ‘citizens’ and language”.
“For ‘brown bag,’ try ‘lunch-and-learn’ or ‘sack lunch,’” wrote Bronstein. “For ‘citizens,’ how about ‘residents?’ (Our Citizens Service Bureau became the Customer Service Bureau a few years ago.)  Just thought I’d bring this up.  Language matters, and the city has entrusted us with the keyboards.”
What could be the offense of using “brown bag” or “citizens,” especially having witness Mayor Mike McGinn’s special pleasure at the swearing in of new U.S. citizens at the Seattle Center on Independence Day.
“This issue came up in one of the departments and I thought I’d send it around as an fyi for your consideration.  We often use the expression ‘brown bag’ to designate a bring-your-own lunch time event.  We also use the word ‘citizens’ as a synonym for ‘residents.’
“Innocuous phrases, right?  Mm, not so much for. For some people, the phrase ‘brown bag’ calls up ugly associations with use of the expression ‘brown bag’ to determine if people’s skin color was light enough to allow admission to an event, a home, etc.
“‘Citizens’ is a different case:  We sometimes use it as another way of saying ‘members of the public’ — except for all the members of the public who aren’t actually citizens but who live and work here.”
Asked on Wednesday how the issue of ‘”brown bag” and “citizens” came up, Bronstein answered:  “Boy, I don’t remember who raised it.  It has come up now and again in the past.”
“The term ‘brown bag’ doesn’t bother everybody, but . . . there is a history behind use of it,” he added.  “It is something easy to correct because there are alternatives.”
In Bronstein’s view, there are “a lot of normal terms once used as ‘normal’ that are not used so much any more.”  He cited, as example, the term “gyp” as a synonym for an attempt to cheat someone.  “I never realized until recently that it was shorthand for ‘gypsy’.”
City government has rightfully embraced all those who live within boundaries of the Emerald City.  Indeed, the Mayor’s office has lately explored with King County the possibility of finding a way to give  “permanent residents” the right to vote in local and municipal elections.
Language DOES matter — witness the recent excesses of Rush Limbaugh and various Fox News hosts — but isn’t the Office for Civil Rights trolling the far parameters of political correctness?  With McGinn’s new emphasis on social justice as a prerequisite to right-of-way decisions, can businesses locating here expect to be asked to adopt the nomenclature of “Residents” rather than “Citizens”?

Islamic Terrorism: The Russians "Get It"

Russia detains 140 suspected Islamic extremists

(AP) Russia detains 140 suspected Islamic extremists
MOSCOW
Russian police and security agents have detained 140 people at a mosque in Moscow on suspicion of involvement with Islamic extremism.
A statement from the Federal Security Agency reported by Russian news agencies said among those detained in the Friday action were 30 citizens of unspecified foreign countries.
The detentions come a week after the two suspects in the fatal Boston Marathon bombing were identified as originating from the Russian region of Chechnya and sympathizing with Islamic extremists.
There were no immediate reports of charges being filed. The security agency referred The Associated Press to a district office, where the telephone was not answered.
The reports cited the agency as saying the mosque previously has been visited by people who had been involved in preparing or carrying out terrorist attacks.

terror_attacksClearly the Russian government, no stranger to Islamic terrorism itself, is not encumbered by the self-destructive mental illness that is political correctness, as we seem to be hopelessly afflicted with it here in America.
Even our normally docile neighbors to the north appear to be catching on, and like the Russians, are taking proactive steps to try and protect their citizens from the 7th Century primitives.
Yet here in post 9/11 America, the supposedly most powerful nation the world has ever seen – a place where five Jihadists have successfully reached their targets since January 20th, 2009, the man charged with defending us from our enemies cannot even bring himself to utter the phrase Islamic terrorism.
I hope we will not wind up eating a couple of cities before this nation, and its government, finally wake up to the reality that is Islam.

Idiots are running this country

lemmings for Obama

A Nation Run by Idiots
by Gary North
TeaPartyEconomist.com, Dec. 20, 2012

You know you live in a Country run by idiots if…
You can get arrested for expired tags on your car but not for being in the country illegally.Your government believes that the best way to eradicate trillions of dollars of debt is to spend trillions more of our money.
A seven year old boy can be thrown out of school for calling his teacher “cute”, but hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class in grade school is perfectly acceptable.
The Supreme Court of the United States can rule that lower courts cannot display the 10 Commandments in their courtroom…while sitting in front of a display of the 10 Commandments.
Children are forcibly removed from parents who appropriately discipline them while children of “underprivileged” drug addicts are left to rot in filth infested cesspools of a ‘home’
Hard work and success are rewarded with higher taxes and government intrusion, while at least some slothful, lazy behavior is rewarded with EBT cards, WIC checks, Medicaid, subsidized housing, and free cell phones.
The government’s plan for getting people back to work is to provide 99 weeks of unemployment checks (to not work).
Being self-sufficient is considered a threat to the government.
Politicians think that stripping away the amendments to the constitution is really protecting the rights of the people.
The rights of the Government come before the rights of the individual.
You pay your mortgage faithfully, denying yourself the newest big screen TV while your neighbor defaults on his mortgage (while buying iPhones, TV’s and new cars) and the government forgives his debt and reduces his mortgage (with your tax dollars).
Being stripped of the ability to defend yourself makes you “safe”.
An 80 year old woman can be stripped searched by the TSA but a Muslim woman in a burka is only subject to having her neck and head searched.
Using the “N” word is considered “hate speech” but writing and singing songs about raping women and killing cops is considered “art”.
You can write a post like this just by reading the news headlines.
Unfortunately, this list could go on and on. Our country is run by idiots.

H/t my friend Robert K. Wilcox!
To the above list you and I can add plenty, such as:

You must produce your original birth certificate to apply for a passport, but not if you’re running for the highest office of the land who will have his/her finger on the nuclear button.

More PC baloney…

Don’t say ‘hold the fort’…it’s offensive to Native Americans, warns state department diversity chief

Daily Mail: Political correctness has just claimed another victim – saying ‘hold the fort’ has now been deemed offensive to Native Americans.  That is the view of the U.S. State Department’s Chief Diversity Officer John Robinson, who has penned a column explaining why that phrase and many others can cause offensive – offering advice on how citizens can watch what they say.

Explaining, wrongly, that ‘hold the fort’ derives from defending homesteads and seeking refuge from raging Native American’s in the 19th century, Robinson advises his readers in State Magazine to be aware that the phrase is now negative and racist.

Chief PC Baloney Officer…

‘How many times have you or a colleague asked if someone could ‘hold down the fort?’ wrote Robinson.’You were likely asking someone to watch the office while you go and do something else, but the phrase’s historical connotation to some is negative and racially offensive.

‘To ‘hold down the fort’ originally meant to watch and protect against the vicious Native American intruders.’In the territories of the West, Army soldiers or settlers saw the ‘fort’ as their refuge from their perceived ‘enemy,’ the stereotypical ‘savage’ Native American tribes.’

In Robinson’s firing line was another phrase that is in everyday use: ‘Going Dutch’. Instead of a fair way of dividing the restaurant bill among friends, the top diversity officer in the country has deemed the phrase as a ‘negative stereotype portraying the Dutch as cheap.’

And instead of referring to a non-exact average ‘rule of thumb’ is offensive to women all across the world. This is because the phrase derives from ‘an antiquated law, whereby the width of a husband’s thumb was the legal size of a switch of rod allowed to beat his wife,’ wrote Robinson.’ If her bruises were not larger than the width of his thumb, the husband could not be brought to court to answer for his behaviour because he had not violated the ‘rule of thumb’.

Drawing attention to this, Robinson hopes that everyone, men and women think before they say this popular phrase.

Moving on to those with disabilities, Robinson urges caution over the word ‘handicap’. This is because some in the disabled community, ‘believe this term is rooted in a correlation between a disabled individual and a beggar, who had to beg with a cap in his or her hand because of the inability to maintain employment.’

‘Choose your words thoughtfully,’ wrote Robinson wrote.’Now that you know the possible historical context of the above phrases, perhaps you will understand why someone could be offended by their use. Let us agree that language will continue to evolve with continually improving consciousness and respect for others.’

Going Dutch is now offensive? And how many people think of a man beating his wife when they say “rule of thumb”?

PC madness…next on the Chief’s agenda:  anyone who believes in traditional marriage is deemed to be offensive.  Someone needs to grow some thicker skin.

Politically Correct – The Ultimate Scenario

Politically Correct Conundrum
By Roger Fredinburg 04-02-2012
Is free speech completely gone in America? Is the first amendment dead?

I awoke early this morning in the still cold darkness of a slowly fading winter night.

I was thinking, while lying warm and safe in my nice soft bed that I should arise and begin my day.

Suddenly I was overtaken by a wave of emotion that stimulated a fear response which led to anxiety and guilt. All of it culminating into a simultaneous physical and spiritual convulsion that left me trembling, my heart pounding and my mind rushing as if I had had reached a climax or suddenly remembered an important commitment that I could not keep. (At my age it’s getting hard to tell the difference).

I began to fret ever so completely about the unfairness of it all, I mean here I am, with a roof over my head, a nice warm bed and all of the creature comforts anyone could desire. I have a nice home, a lovely wife, an ugly little dog and a normal, happy life.

All the while, just around the corner and down the street, somewhere in my neighborhood, I was now certain, lived, I assumed, some sad and lonely sort, suffering in the street, homeless, cold, hungry and alone. I thought to myself; How dare I, who am I to enjoy such comfort while others go without… Oh what a shameless man I am, the mere thought of it all made me feel un-worthy to have such a decent life.

I was certain that that poor homeless gent I conjured up was a victim of my greed and self indulgence and I am absolutely certain that my material excesses are damaging to his self image and lowering his self esteem. Matter of fact, my modest success in life might actually be causing him emotional and psychological pain. It’s surely all my fault.

Madness: Police arrest dad for a drawing of him holding a gun

Canadian police arrested a man in Kitchener, Ontario, because his 4-year-old daughter had drawn a picture of him holding a gun.
As reported by Sun News, Feb. 24, 2012, Jessie Sansone told the newspaper Record that he was in shock when police arrested and took him to a police station for questioning over the drawing: “This is completely insane. My daughter drew a gun on a piece of paper at school.”
Officials told the newspaper the move was necessary to ensure there were no guns accessible by children in the family’s home. They also justified the arrest because 4-year-old Neaveh Sansone had said the man holding the gun in her drawing was her dad and “he uses it to shoot bad guys and monsters.”
To add insult upon injury, the police not only arrested Sansone, they also strip-searched him and searched his home while he was in custody. His wife and three children were taken to the police station, and the children were interviewed by Family and Children’s Services.
Sansone’s wife, Stephanie Squires, told the newspaper no one told them why her husband had been arrested: “He had absolutely no idea what this was even about. I just kept telling them, ‘You’re making a mistake.'”
Several hours later, the police finally released Jessie Sansone without charges.
Any day now, this madness is sure to creep across the border into the United Socialist States of America. That is, if it hasn’t already.

Marines Pee on Dead Talibastards

Via foxnews.com:
Video appears to show marines urinating on bodies, sparking military investigation
Published January 11, 2012
The U.S. Marine Corps is launching an investigation into a video that recently surfaced online showing what appears to be several Marines in uniform urinating on corpses.
The video, which started Wednesday morning making the rounds on the Web, shows four men in full Marine combat gear standing over the bodies of what appear to be dead Taliban fighters. They look around before proceeding to urinate over the corpses. One of the men can be heard saying, “Have a great day, buddy.”
According to TMZ, the unnamed person responsible for posting the video included a caption reading, “scout sniper team 4 with 3rd battalion 2nd marines out of camp lejeune peeing on dead talibans,” though it wasn’t immediately clear if any of that information was accurate.
The Marine Corps issued a statement immediately after learning of the video, saying a full investigation is under way.
“While we have not yet verified the origin or authenticity of this video, the actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps,” the statement read.

DoD Caves In to CAIR

Via  blogs.orlandosentinel.com:
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced today that the Department of Defense will begin allowing Muslim and Sikh students who wear an Islamic head scarf (hijab) or a turban to participate in the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC).
“We welcome the fact that Muslim and Sikh students nationwide will now be able to participate fully in JROTC leadership activities while maintaining their religious beliefs and practices,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.
In October, the Washington-based Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization wrote to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta after a 14-year-old Muslim student at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tenn., was forced to transfer out of a JROTC class when her commanding officers told her she could not wear hijab while marching in the September homecoming parade.
CAIR requested constitutionally-protected religious accommodations for the girl and for future Muslim JROTC participants.
In a Dec. 19 letter sent to CAIR, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army Larry Stubblefield wrote:
”I have been asked to respond on behalf of the Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta to your October 13, 2011 letter concerning Miss Demin Zawity’s request to wear a religious head covering (hijab) while participating in an Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) event at Ravenwood High School.
“Based on your concerns, the Army has reviewed its JROTC uniform policy and will develop appropriate procedures to provide Cadets the opportunity to request the wear of religious head dress, such as the turban and hijab. This change will allow Miss Zawity and other students the chance to fully participate in the JROTC program. Additionally, a representative from the U.S. Army Cadet Command will contact Miss Zawity and provide her the opportunity to rejoin the Ravenwood High School JROTC unit.
“The Army prides itself in being a diverse organization, comprised of individuals from many faiths and religions. We appreciate you bringing this matter to our attention.”

It ultimately cost them their empire.
Their enemy was, by the way, the Islamists.
