The Chicago Way: Mayor Lightfoot defends police Superintendent Johnson after FOP issues “no confidence” vote against him

Imagine this: You are out having a couple of drinks. You get into your car and start driving. You suddenly feel “ill” and pull over. You then fall asleep.

A cop then comes up to your car window and finds you sleeping behind the wheel.

You think that cop is going to let you go on your merry way or are you going to get a DUI?

Well, if you live in Chicago and are the police superintendent – it’s your lucky day!

On October 19, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson was out at dinner and had a “couple” drinks. He then pulled over and fell asleep at a stop sign while driving home. Johnson says the incident was related to a change in his blood pressure medication. More details from The Guardian:

“Superintendent Eddie Johnson did not mention having anything to drink when he spoke to reporters on Thursday night and a department spokesman said the officers who responded to a 911 call reporting a man asleep in a car at a stop sign did not observe any signs of impairment.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot told the Chicago Sun-Times on Friday she agreed with Eddie Johnson’s decision to request an internal affairs investigation.

“It was the right thing,” Lightfoot said. “We’ll see how that plays itself out.”

The police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said: “While we have no indication of impropriety at this time, this question can only be answered by the internal affairs investigation.”

Guglielmi said on Thursday: “There were no charges of intoxication, no information of intoxication as far as I know.”

Johnson told reporters on Thursday evening he was driving home at about 12.30am after having let his driver go home, when he felt lightheaded. He said he pulled over and fell asleep.

Officers allowed him to drive home and did not administer a breathalyzer or a field sobriety test. Johnson said officers do such tests only when a motorist appears impaired or officers smell alcohol or cannabis.”

A week after the incident, Mayor Lori Lightfoot was coming to his defense. According to the Chicago Tribune, Lightfoot defended Johnson’s tenure as Chicago’s top cop saying “he has sacrificed a tremendous amount for the city” even as a watchdog probes the mysterious incident where police last week found him asleep in his car.

The same day Lightfoot expressed her support for the “top cop,” the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police issued a vote of no confidence against Johnson.

Johnson boycotted the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference on the 26th where President Trump delivered a well-received speech to law enforcement. Johnson cited “personal values” as the reason he chose to boycott saying, “I have to take into account, not just my personal feelings about it, but our core values as a city. We are nothing without trust and with some of our communities under siege, it just doesn’t line up with our city’s core values along with my personal values.”

No wonder Chiraq is such a mess. With “leaders” like this, nothing will every change in that city.

Chicago Police finally have the solution to solve their crimes: Diversity and relationships based on color

Mayor Rahm Emanual: Diversity…yeah, that’s the distracting ticket!

Call me skeptical…maybe because I’m a “privileged” white girl. And I don’t live in Chiraq.

I’m guessing you can’t reduce crime if you can’t properly identify the cause of  crime (unless by skin color)?

According to the Chiraq Police and the good mayor Rahm Emanual, you can reduce gang and gun violence by hiring people who have the same skin pigmentation as the criminals.

When I moved to my community in Oklahoma, I joined a neighborhood group where we watch out for each other. We make sure everyone is safe. Our group has a relationship and it’s not based on color. It’s based on safety and we’ve seen a reduction in crime.

And I’m glad we all have a relationship that changed our neighborhood for the better, without seeing any color. None of us had to take a “test” to see change…because we see our neighbors as just neighbors. Not colors…

From MyFoxChicago: Chicago just got another infusion of new police officers to help communities ailing from crime.

The city’s top brass says their hiring surge and new policing strategies are working to reduce crime in Chicago.

And as FOX 32’s Sally Schulze reports, these new officers look more like the people they serve and protect. “They’ll be in every neighborhood in every part of the city, strengthening the backbone of the police department which is the beat officer,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.

With the announcement, the city steps more than halfway toward the goal of hiring 1000 new officers.

CPD is also working to increase their diversity with 61-percent of officers hired since last year identifying as minorities.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says they’re seeing recruits from minority neighborhoods who want to help.

“You want to help change your community? Trust me, you fill out that application, you take that test, I will put you back in that neighborhood that you said you want to see changing,” Johnson said.

Eight of the 107 new officers will work at the 11th District on the city’s West Side and community members say they’re glad to hear more minorities will be in the ranks.

“The police department actually listened to what we are saying, you can’t police someone if you don’t have a relationship with that person and our relationship is our color,” said West Side resident Jimmy Simmons.

CPD is also getting help to solve carjackings and thefts, adding 200 squad cars equipped with automatic license plate readers.

Plus, seven more districts will get strategic policing centers as Chicago uses new tech and new faces to fight crime.
