Joe Biden vows to take on systemic racism

Pictured above: Joe Biden with Robert Byrd, whom he called a “great leader.”

Dude, you’ve been in public office since 1973. 1973.

Why haven’t you addressed this systemic racism before now? Why didn’t you address it during your tenure as Vice President? Oh yeah, it’s an election year. Gotta put some spin on your campaign.

As reported by MyFoxChicago:

Joe Biden vowed to address institutional racism in his first 100 days in office as he sought to elevate his voice Monday in the exploding national debate over racism and police brutality.

The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee offered emotional support and promised bold action during an in-person discussion with black leaders in Delaware and a subsequent virtual meeting with big-city mayors who are grappling with racial tensions and frustrated by a lack of federal support.

“Hate just hides. It doesn’t go away, and when you have somebody in power who breathes oxygen into the hate under the rocks, it comes out from under the rocks,” Biden told more than a dozen African American leaders gathered at a church in downtown Wilmington, his face mask lowered around his chin as he spoke.

Without offering specifics, he promised to “deal with institutional racism” and set up a police oversight body in his first 100 days in office, if elected.”

Joe Biden says he’ll nominate a woman as VP and a black woman for SCOTUS

From TMZ: Joe Biden picked what will probably be his last debate with Bernie Sanders to make a big announcement … if he gets the nomination, he’s picking a woman to run with him.

Biden left no wiggle room. He said there are women in this country who, right now, are capable of being President of the United States, and he intends to pick one of them.

So, the obvious candidates … Senators Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Kamala Harris. But hey, what about Hillary? Remember, she said “I never say never.” And her new Hulu doc is pretty great.

Not to be outdone … Bernie also said he would almost certainly pick a woman, but it doesn’t look like he’ll have that opportunity.

Biden also said the first chance he gets to nominate a U.S. Supreme Court Justice … he’ll pick a black woman, saying it’s about time.

If elected billionaire Tom Steyer vows to raise minimum wage to $22 per hour

Why stop at $22? How’d he come up with that magic number? I say take it to $25, $50, heck go all the way to $100!

From Fox News: Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer vowed to call for a $22 hourly minimum wage if he wins his longshot bid to unseat incumbent President Trump in November.

Steyer, a billionaire who founded investment company Farallon Capital Management in 1986 and sold it in 2012, is campaigning heavily on addressing climate change.

He made the announcement during a campaign block party on Sunday while campaigning in South Carolina, according to The Associated Press. Progressive candidates Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have released competing plans to hike the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

The federal minimum wage rate has remained at $7.25 per hour for the past decade, though 29 states and Washington have set it higher. (At the beginning of January, more than 20 states raised base pay even higher). The annual earnings for a full-time minimum-wage worker are $15,080, which is slightly above the federal poverty line for one person.

According to a Congressional Budget Office report published in July 2019, increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour could result in 1.3 million workers losing their jobs. (The report estimated there’s about a two-thirds chance that somewhere between zero and 3.7 million workers would lose their jobs).

It could also have negative consequences for small businesses, which tend to operate in more competitive markets with thin margins.

“A higher minimum wage reduces the family income of business owners to the extent that firms’ profits are reduced,” the CBO report said. “Real income is also reduced for nearly all people because increases in the prices of goods and services weaken families’ purchasing power. Over time, as businesses increasingly pass their higher costs on to consumers, the losses in business income diminish and the losses in families’ real income grow.”

Over the past seven months, Steyer has poured $14 million into blanketing South Carolina’s airwaves with ads — a strategy that’s beginning to take hold. According to the RealClearPolitics voting averages, Steyer is polling second in the state, behind only former Vice President Joe Biden. Sanders is a close third.

Kamala Harris has $100 BILLION plan for tackling black homeownership, racial wealth gap

I recall some similar programs that led to a financial crisis just not too long ago. How soon they forget history when running for office while promising free stuff.

From Fox News: Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., announced Saturday that she would invest $100 billion of federal money into housing assistance for black families as part of an effort to close the racial wealth gap in the United States if elected president.

“After generations of discrimination, it’s time to give Black families a real shot at homeownership,” Harris tweeted on Saturday.

While appearing at Essence’s Global Black Economic Forum, she emphasized the role of homeownership in driving the growth of wealth in the U.S. According to Harris’ campaign, she would help 4 million homebuyers through down payment and closing-cost assistance — granting up to $25,000 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“If we eliminate racial wealth disparities in homeownership rates, median Black wealth would grow $32,113 per household, and the wealth gap between Black and white households would shrink 31 percent,” her campaign said.

The program would target residents in red-lined communities — areas the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation has dissuaded lenders from investing in — which her campaign identified as a culprit behind wealth disparities.

“Redlining has resulted in households of color receiving just 2% of the [Federal Housing Administration] loans expanded between 1934-1962, and formerly redlined neighborhoods are sites of deep racial disparities in home value and lending activity,” an information sheet from her campaign read.

Her plan would also seek to increase credit access by alter crediting reporting standards to include payments on credit cards, student loans, auto loans, and mortgage payments.

The announcement came after polling showed her advancing amid a dispute with the frontrunner, former Vice President Joe Biden, over comments he made about racial issues.

After she targeted Biden during the first Democratic primary debate, Biden’s lead dropped in a Quinnipiac poll. That same poll showed Harris rising from 7 percent to 20 percent and leading Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

Racial issues have become a major topic as many Democrats accused the administration of bias against minorities. Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, also sought to address racial wealth disparities with a plan that would vastly expand the federal government’s investment in women- and minority-owned businesses.

The 2020 hopeful claimed his plan would “unlock over half a trillion dollars” in resources and “spur the development of 200,000 new women and minority-owned small businesses.”

It also would redirect $100 billion in federal contracting toward small businesses, expand access to mentorship opportunities, open a public credit reporting agency and work through certain avenues to expand access to markets and capital.
