Sunday Funny: March of the Belgian Cadets

Belgium is a founding member of both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military alliance of which the United States is also a member. In fact, NATO’s headquarters are in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. That means America is obliged by treaty to defend Belgium.

Ponder that, as you watch the video below of a group of cadets of the Belgium Defense Forces.

From “an open letter to the esteemed Belgian Defence Forces,” published on Military Times, an independent source of news and information for U.S. service members and their families:

[Y]our cadets of the Belgian Defence Forces…spent the week commemorating noteworthy first steps — which appeared to be their first … ever.

For that is the terrifying display the rest of the world bore witness to this week during the broadcast of a wonderful Belgian parade, one in which your group of cadets managed to stumble their way through…. One must assume the only reason for including this group of cadets was due to the nation of Belgium literally running out of human beings to fill the void in this section of the parade….

And the leader? He somehow managed to fall out of step … with himself…. If any training, at all, occurred leading up to this abomination, everyone involved is to be condemned for a job never done.

ManBearPig: Trump has "hurt our standing in the world"

Does anyone with a brain take this blowhard, energy-gobbling mansion owner and private carbon-emitting jet plane flyer hypocrite seriously?
And I thought proggies were all about “paying their fair share?” Heaven forbid we “undermine our alliances” with NATO by demanding they pay their fair share. Oh the horror!
From Hollywood Reporter: Al Gore spoke about Donald Trump and his withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement, as well as the controversy around Russia’s possible involvement in the 2016 presidential campaign, during an appearance on NBC’s Today on Monday.
“We’ve never had a president who’s deliberately made decisions, the effect of which is to tear down America’s standing in the world, starting with his withdrawal from the Paris agreement,” said the former vice president. “The climate crisis is by far the most serious challenge we face, but he’s also undermined our alliances such as NATO and hurt our standing in the world in many ways.”
Gore said that when he met with Trump after he was elected president, he found Trump “attentive” and had a “pleasant exchange” with him when they spoke about the environment.
“I had hoped he would come to his senses on the Paris agreement, but I was wrong,” said Gore, who has not spoken with Trump since the president’s decision on the climate-change agreement.
When asked about the Russia controversy, Gore said he thinks it is being buried that intelligence agencies have been unanimous in saying there has been “an unprecedented assault on our democracy” by Russia. “Everything that’s coming out now has to be seen in that context,” said Gore.
He declined to comment on Donald Trump Jr.’s recent scandal but said the country is going to “face some challenging months ahead.” He stressed that he has complete confidence in Robert Mueller, the independent counsel who is investigating the Trump campaign’s potential involvement with Russia.
Gore is promoting his Inconvenient Truth follow-up An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, which hits theaters on July 28.

Angela Merkel says Europe must take more refugees and Islam 'isn't source of terror'

merkel muslim
Earlier this month, Angela Merkel stated that Germany will offer cash handouts worth millions of pounds for migrants to leave Germany in an effort to silence criticism of her ‘open-door’ border policy. Now this? Proggies…they can never be consistent.
From Daily Star UK: The embattled leader says Europe has an obligation to take displaced people from Syria and Iraq.
She also said Islam “is not the cause of terrorism” and that combatting extremism needs the cooperation of Muslim countries.
In a wide-ranging speech at a Munich security conference, the German chief also vowed to work closely with Vladimir Putin’s Russia in the fight with ISIS in the Middle East.
Mrs. Merkel has come under fire for taking in up to one million refugees amid security concerns and a string of migrant sex attacks across Germany.
After the Berlin lorry attack at a Christmas market in December, ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage said events such as that will be “Merkel’s legacy”.
Mrs. Merkel had been a strong critic of Brexit, saying she had “deep regrets” about it. She will go to the polls in September against Social Democrat candidate Martin Schulz, the former European Parliament President.
On Putin, she said Europe’s ties with Russia remained challenging, but it was important to work with them in the fight against Islamist terrorism. She said: “The joint fight against Islamic terrorism is one area where we have the same interests and we can work together.”
Her comments about Islam and refugees follow her criticism of Donald Trump’s travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries.
New US Vice-President Mike Pence was in the audience and reaffirmed the US’ commitment to NATO in a speech of his own.
Germany is under increasing pressure to increase military spending, would do “everything possible” meet a NATO target for spending two percent of economic output on defence by 2024, Merkel told the conference.
Only last week, a student was dragged into woods and raped by a migrant who spoke no English near the campus of Bochum University.

U.S. to close 15 military bases in Europe, as Russia's presence grows

After provoking a new Cold War with Moscow — imposing economic sanctions on Russia over Ukraine, specifically Crimea — the U.S. is retreating from Europe with the closure of 15 military bases.
At a minimum, Obama’s foreign policy is a mess of confusion and mixed messages. At a maximum, he’s doing this by design.
Remember his whispered words to then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Seoul, South Korea, March 26, 2012? Not realizing his words would be picked up by live microphones, Obama signaled to Medvedev that — wink, wink, nudge, nudge — he’ll be much freer to act as he pleases after he’s won reelection: “This is my last election. After my election, I have more flexibility” to deal with missile defense by tearing down America’s missile shield. Then he asked for Russia’s patience — for more “space” and “time.”

Russian bombers to patrol Gulf of Mexico

German officer to serve as U.S. Army Europe's chief of staff

A foreigner is now second in command of US Army Europe

A foreigner is now second in command of US Army Europe

Army Times: A German Army brigadier general who recently served with NATO forces in Afghanistan is assuming duties as the chief of staff of U. S. Army Europe, the first time a non-American officer has held that position.
Brig. Gen. Markus Laubenthal, most recently the commander of Germany’s 12th Panzer Brigade in Amberg, and chief of staff of Regional Command North, International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan, will be stationed at USAREUR headquarters, Wiesbaden, Germany. He could report to duty as early as Monday.
Laubenthal also has served as military assistant to the deputy commander of operations and assistant chief of staff of operations for NATO forces in Kosovo.
As the major staff assistant to USAREUR commander Lt. Gen. Donald Campbell, Laubenthal will synchronize the command’s staff activities much as American predecessors have in the past.
“This is a bold and major step forward in USAREUR’s commitment to operating in a multinational environment with our German allies,” said Campbell.
U. S. and German senior military leaders have been serving together in NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan for years. Sustaining the shared capability from this experience will benefit both the U. S. and German armies,” said Campbell who has headed the Army’s largest and oldest overseas command since 2012.
Laubenthal’ s assignment comes at a time of strained relations between the U.S. and Germany as a result of disclosures over the past year that the National Security Agency, and more recently the Central Intelligence Agency, had been conducting information gathering operations against German citizens, to include Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Army sources in Europe said the first-ever assignment of a German general to the USAREUR staff is unrelated to the political furor over the spying revelations, but does reflect the increased importance of multinational operations in NATO.
Officials said the addition of a German general officer to the USAREUR staff has been planned for several months, and is part of an American effort to give a more multi-national flavor to its major overseas commands.
My two cents (with input from my military contact):
This is nothing but sucking up to the Germans and Europe. They say it’s unrelated to the CIA’s actions yet you really believe what this administration tells you? Bet a good US Army officer was passed up for this job, too.
This foreigner is going to encounter restrictions – he won’t be able to view certain US classified documents (NOFORN – Not Releasable to Foreign Nationals/Non-US Citizens), and will not be able to view certain unclassified US documents (i.e., documents containing US soldiers’ social security numbers). But hey, what does that matter? It’s a synchronized multi-national cause! The UN must be thrilled with this.
Update: It was brought to my attention that an Australian is the Deputy Commanding General (Operations) for the U.S. Army, Pacific (USARPAC), who has national command and operational experience. This position works under the Chief of Staff and has the same restrictions (NOFORN).
Still, the appointment of this German to Chief of Staff is the first time a non-American has held this position, which is a level above a deputy for an operating division.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP)Afghan police have shot and killed three protesters in two separate incidents in the north and south of the country where riots broke out during demonstrations over this week’s Quran burnings incident.
The police say one protester was fatally shot and four people were wounded, including two police officers, when security forces and some protesters exchanged gunfire during a riot on Thursday outside the police headquarters in the northern province of Baghlan.
Police say another two protesters were killed and six were wounded in another exchange of gunfire during a protest in southern Uruzgan province.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — NATO says a man wearing an Afghan army uniform has turned his weapon on coalition troops, killing two service members.
NATO says the incident occurred on Thursday in eastern Afghanistan. No other details were disclosed.
The shooting is the latest in a rising number of attacks on NATO troops by Afghan police and soldiers or militants dressed in their uniforms.
The attacks have raised questions about the vetting of Afghan recruits and has heightened tension between foreign troops and their Afghan partners.
Last month, France suspended its training program and threatened to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan

a year ahead of schedule after an Afghan soldier shot and killed four French soldiers on a base in the east.

Another Obama War? With Pakistan?

Pakistan stops NATO supplies after deadly raid

By Shams Momand
YAKKAGHUND, Pakistan | Sat Nov 26, 2011 3:45pm EST

(Reuters) – NATO helicopters and fighter jets attacked two military outposts in northwest Pakistan on Saturday, killing as many as 28 troops and plunging U.S.-Pakistan relations deeper into crisis.
Pakistan retaliated by shutting down NATO supply routes into Afghanistan, used for sending in nearly half of the alliance’s land shipments. It also said it would ask U.S. forces to quit an air base used for CIA drone strikes on militants.
The attack is the worst incident of its kind since Pakistan uneasily allied itself with Washington following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

New Leader Says Libya to Have Sharia Law

The fruit of Arab Spring

When news came last Thursday that Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi had bee killed, Obama quickly touted the news as the beginning of a new time for Libyans and as vindication of his administration’s backing and participation in the NATO military intervention war in Libya which began on March 19, 2011. The official name for the U.S. campaign is the optimistic Operation Odyssey Dawn.
In the name of the protection and securing of “human rights,” the legal basis for NATO’s “military intervention” is United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973, which was adopted on 17 March 201 under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. [Read the full text of the Resolution here.]
Now that the “military intervention” presumably has ended with Gaddafi’s death, Obama welcomed the declaration of liberation by Libya’s new leaders yesterday (Oct. 23) and urged the transition government to respect human rights and work toward democracy.
That same day, Libya’s transitional leader declared the newly liberated country to be an Islamic state where Sharia law will rule.
The Associated Press reports, Oct. 23, 2011, that in a keynote speech at the declaration of liberation ceremony in the eastern city of Benghazi, the birthplace of the 8-month uprising against Gaddafi, Libya’s transitional government leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil laid out a vision for the future with an Islamist tint.
Abdul-Jalil first declared that “This revolution was looked after by God to achieve victory.” Henceforth, Islamic Sharia law would be the “basic source” of legislation. Existing laws that contradict the teachings of Islam would be nullified.
Abdul-Jalil outlined several changes to align with Islamic law:

  • New banks would be set up to follow the Islamic banking system, which bans charging interest as a practice deemed usury. For the time being, interest would be canceled from any personal loans already taken out and less than 10,000 Libyan dinars (about $7,500).
  • An existing family law that limits the number of wives Libyan can take will be annulled because it contradicts the provision in the Muslim holy book, the Quran, that allows men up to four wives.
  • Libyans are urged to hand back money or property taken during the civil war.

In a gesture that showed his own piety, Abdul-Jalil urged Libyans not to express their joy by firing guns in the air, but rather to chant “Allahu Akbar,” or God is Great. He then stepped aside from the podium and knelt to offer a brief prayer of thanks.
The transitional leadership has said it would declare a new interim government within a month of liberation and elections for a constitutional assembly within eight months, to be followed by votes for a parliament and president within a year.
For his part, Obama congratulated Libyans on their declaration of liberation: “After four decades of brutal dictatorship and eight months of deadly conflict, the Libyan people can now celebrate their freedom and the beginning of a new era of promise.”
Using Sharia as the main source of legislation is also stipulated in the constitution of neighboring Egypt.
So much for the much-heralded Arab Spring that began with mass protests nearly a year ago.
