12 Republican senators voted against Trump’s national emergency to build border wall

Bridget Bowman reports for Roll Call that yesterday, 12 Republican senators joined every Demonrat senator in voting for a resolution to block President Trump invoking a national emergency at the southern border so as to build the wall with defense funds. Trump had declared a national emergency last month after the Democrat-dominant House refused to appropriate his requested $5+ billion funds for a border wall.

See “The Trump Show” on Trump’s declaration of national emergency to build border wall, and “Ann Coulter: By signing the budget deal, Trump signs away his right as CIC to build the wall“.

The resolution passed the Senate, 59-41, after passing the House late last month.

The Gang of 12 Republicans includes so-called “moderate” senators — one of whom is up for re-election in 2020 — and so-called “conservatives”. 6 of the 12 serve on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Here are the 12 Republican senators who voted to thwart President Trump’s national emergency declaration:

(1) Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee: A 3-term senator and member of the Appropriations Committee said in a statement yesterday ahead of the vote that although he supports the president on border security, the emergency declaration sets a dangerous precedent: “His declaration to take an additional $3.6 billion that Congress has appropriated for military hospitals, barracks and schools is inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution that I swore an oath to support and defend.” Alexander announced last December that he would not run for re-election in 2020.

(2) Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri: A senior member of the Appropriations Committee, Blunt is concerned about the precedent Trump’s declaration of emergency would set. Blunt was re-elected to a second Senate term in 2016. (He served several terms in the House before running for Senate in 2010.)

(3) Sen. Susan Collins of Maine: Not only is this POS pro-late term abortions, Collins actually co-sponsored the resolution ostensiblyout of concern for the precedent an emergency declaration would set for the powers of the executive branch. The four-term senator is likely to face her toughest re-election next year, with Democrats raising millions of dollars for a yet-to-be-determined challenger after she voted for Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh.

(4) Sen. Mike Lee of Utah: First elected in 2010, Lee announced his support for the resolution Wednesday after Trump rejected Lee’s offer of a compromise to curtail future national emergency declarations through an amendment of the National Emergencies Act to include the automatic termination of future emergencies after 30 days unless Congress authorizes the emergency to continue. Lee said in a statement announcing his decision that “For decades, Congress has been giving far too much legislative power to the executive branch.”  One of the most conservative senators, Lee is up for re-election in 2022.

(5) Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas: A member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Moran tweeted that “I share President Trump’s goal of securing our borders, but expanding the powers of the presidency beyond its constitutional limits is something I cannot support.” Moran is up for a third term in 2022.

(6) Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska: Another pro-abort POS, Murkowski said in a floor speech earlier this month: “Congress is a co-equal branch of government and as such Congress should stand up for itself.” She is not up for re-election until 2022.

(7) Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky: Earlier this month, Paul announced at a GOP Lincoln Day dinner that he would support the resolution because Congress did not appropriate the funds Trump was looking to use for the border wall, and “If we take away those checks and balances, it’s a dangerous thing.” A self-described libertarian, Paul was re-elected to the Senate in 2016 after a failed White House bid, and he will not face voters again until 2022.

(8) Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio: Portman had worked with Mike Lee on the compromise resolution. The two-term senator said that while he supported Trump’s request for border wall funding, an emergency declaration is not necessary to secure those funds, and that the declaration would set a “dangerous precedent” by opening “the door for future presidents to implement just about any policy they want.” Portman won re-election by more than 20 points in 2016 and won’t face voters again until 2022.

(9) Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah: Although Romney is a freshman senator, he entered the Senate with a high profile as his party’s 2012 presidential nominee and the former governor of Massachusetts. Critical of Trump in the past, even before Trump officially declared a national emergency, Romney said he “would also expect the president stay within statutory and constitutional limits.” Romney won the open Utah Senate race in 2018 by 32 points, and he is not up for re-election again until 2024.

(10) Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida: Like the others, Rubio too warned of the precedent set by Trump’s national emergency. A member of Senate Appropriations, he said in February that while he agrees there is a crisis at the southern border, “a future president may use this exact same tactic to impose the Green New Deal.” Rubio won re-election by 8 points in 2016 after an unsuccessful run for the GOP nomination for president. Trump carried Florida by just 1 point in 2016.

(11) Sen. Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania: A “conservative” Republican, Toomey had occasionally broken with President Trump in the past, particularly on Trump’s use of tariffs. Toomey told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he supports Trump’s effort to build a border wall, but the declaration of a national emergency was “a very important separation of powers issue.” Toomey narrowly won re-election in 2016 when Trump won Pennsylvania by less than a point.

(12) Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi: The two-term senator, who’s the chairman of the Commerce Committee and the second-highest-ranked Republican on the Armed Services Committee, also had “serious reservations” about what an emergency declaration would do to the separation of powers. Wicker said in a statement earlier this week: “The precedent we set this year might empower a future liberal President to declare emergencies to enact gun control or to address ‘climate emergencies,’ or even to tear down the wall we are building today.” Wicker, an Air Force veteran, won re-election comfortably last fall in a state Trump carried by nearly 20 points in 2016.

Today, President Trump used his veto powers for the first time to overturn the Congressional resolution, calling it “reckless”. He said: “Today I am vetoing this resolution. Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it.” To override his veto would require two-thirds of the vote in both the House and the Senate, and the Senate doesn’t have the 67 votes needed for an override. (New York Post).

For all the Gang of 12’s concerns about the separation of powers and Trump setting a “dangerous precedent” by declaring a state of national emergency, one would think such declarations are rarely invoked.

Not so.

The fact of the matter is there have been 58 national emergencies declared by presidents since 1979 under the National Emergencies Act of 1975, 31 of which are still active national emergencies. Below are the number of national emergencies declared by President Carter and after:

  • Jimmy Carter: 2 — one of which is still active.
  • Ronald Reagan: 6 — none of which is active.
  • George H.W. Bush: 5 — none of which is active.
  • Bill Clinton: 17 — 6 of which are still in effect.
  • Barack Obama: 13 — 11 of which are still active.
  • Donald Trump: 3. (Source: CBS News, citing the Brennan Center)

Senate Democrats vote for infanticide

Jeremiah 19: 3-5

Thus saith the LORD of hosts….
Behold, I will bring evil upon this place….
Because they have forsaken me, and…
have filled this place with the blood of innocents.

Yesterday, a bill introduced by Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) against infanticide by ensuring that babies who are born alive after botched abortions are provided medical care and treatment, failed 53-44 because every Democrat except three voted against it.

The bill, S. 130 – Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act was introduced by Sen. Sasse on January 15, 2019, in response to laws recently passed in New York and Virginia legalizing abortion of not just late-term (third trimester) unborn humans, but post-birth (“after labor”) abortions. Similar moves are being made in Illinois and Vermont.

To that end, S. 130 states that its purpose is “To amend title 18, United States Code, to prohibit a health care practitioner from failing to exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion.”

S. 130 furthermore states that “If an abortion results in the live birth of an infant, the infant is a legal person for all purposes under the laws of the United States, and entitled to all the protections of such laws” because “Any infant born alive after an abortion or within a hospital, clinic, or other facility has the same claim to the protection of the law that would arise for any newborn, or for any person who comes to a hospital, clinic, or other facility for screening and treatment or otherwise becomes a patient within its care.”

Accordingly, “Any health care practitioner present at the time the child is born alive shall—

“(A) exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age; and

“(B) following the exercise of skill, care, and diligence required under subparagraph (A), ensure that the child born alive is immediately transported and admitted to a hospital….

Whoever intentionally performs or attempts to perform an overt act that kills a child born alive described under subsection (a), shall be punished as under section 1111 of this title for intentionally killing or attempting to kill a human being.”

S. 130, with 48 co-sponsors, all Republicans, needed 60 votes to pass, but received only 53 “yes” votes:

  • Every Democrat, except Senators Joe Manchin (WVa), Bob Casey (PA) and Doug Jones (AL), voted against the bill, i.e., voted for infanticide:
    • Among the Demonrats who voted in favor of infanticide were every Democrat senator running for president in 2020: Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand and Bernie Sanders.
  • Every Republican except three voted for the bill:
    • Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who supports abortion, did not vote.
    • Pro-life Republican Senators Tim Scott and Kevin Cramer, who would have voted “yes,” did not vote because they were absent due to flight delays.

During the debate on S. 130, Demonrats made false claims about the bill — that it would ban abortions or ban late-term abortions; that the bill hated women; and that abortion is about women’s health. (LifeNews)

But S. 130 is not about banning abortions, late-term or otherwise. Nor is S. 130 about women; it’s about babies who survive an abortion. Nor is S. 130 about women’s health; it’s about the health and the life of babies. Nor does S. 130 hate women. On the contrary, the bill goes out of its way to protect women whose babies survive an abortion by specifying that “The mother of a child born alive described under subsection (a) may not be prosecuted for a violation of this section, an attempt to violate this section, a conspiracy to violate this section, or an offense under section 3 or 4 of this title based on such a violation.”

Don’t believe me? Read S. 130 for yourself, here. It’s not long — only one page.

There are some who suspect the Demonrats’ bloodlust to abort late-term unborn and outright kill babies who survive abortions, may have something to do with the lucrative sale of baby parts for “scientific” research and who knows what else.

In fact, in 2017, as a result of Center for Medical Progress’ undercover video exposés, two California companies, DaVinci Biosciences and DV Biologics, were fined and ordered to shut down for illegally trafficking world-wide in aborted baby parts (tissues and organs) obtained from Planned Parenthood of Orange County.

Most recently, on February 13, 2019, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Roberto and William Isaías, wealthy Ecuadorian brothers who were principals in DaVinci Biosciences and DV Biologics. The brothers donated $90,000 to Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, and were given asylum in the U.S. by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Clinton’s State Department also rebuffed attempts by Ecuador to extradite the brothers to face justice for running their Ecuadorian bank into the ground, illictly profiting from government bailout funds, and wiping out the life savings of thousands of families. The Two Witches Caption Contest

This is the 186th world-famous FOTM Caption Contest!

Here’s the pic (h/t DCG):

About the pic: The pic of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), 85, apparently badgering Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), 61, was taken around the time of the Kavanaugh hearings. Murkowski was the only Republican senator who voted against Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court.

You know the drill:

  • Enter the contest by submitting your caption as a comment on this thread (scroll down until you see the “LEAVE A REPLY” box), not via email or on Facebook.
  • The winner of the Caption Contest will get a gorgeous Award Certificate of Excellence and a year’s free subscription to FOTM:D
  • FOTM writers will vote for the winner.
  • Any captions proffered by FOTM writers, no matter how brilliant (ha ha), will not be considered. :(

This contest will be closed in a week, at the end of next Tuesday, October 30, 2018.

To get the contest going, here’s my caption:

Feinstein: “Remember the dead horse’s head scene from The Godfather?”

By the way, according to an Italian government report, the country’s mayors and local administrators received 212 threats from organized crime in 2010, especially in Italy’s underdeveloped south. The most common ways to threaten administrators who refuse to collude with the Mafia are to burn their cars, mail them envelopes containing bullets, or send boxes with severed animal heads, an act reminiscent of a memorable scene involving the head of a racehorse in “The Godfather.” (Reuters)

Brett Kavanaugh sworn in as Supreme Court Justice!

UPDATE (Oct. 9):

Justice Brett Kavanaugh is already at work! He hired his clerks — all women — and will participate in oral arguments before the Supreme Court today.

This afternoon, Brett Kavanaugh, 53, was sworn in as 114th Supreme Court justice, hours after the Senate voted 50-48 to confirm him.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the constitutional oath and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy administered the judicial one.

The quick swearing-in enables Kavanaugh to begin work immediately in advance of arguments at the court Tuesday.

Kavanaugh’s wife, children and parents were in attendance. (New York Post)

The Senate voted today to confirm U.S. District Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be the next Associate Justice on the Supreme Court, replacing pro-abortion Justice Anthony Kennedy following his retirement.

Kavanaugh was confirmed on a 50-48 vote:

  • All Democrat senators, except Joe Manchin (WV), voted “no” against Kavanaugh’s nomination.
  • All Republican senators voted “yes,” except pro-abort Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), who voted “present”, and pro-life Steve Daines (Montana), who supported Kavanaugh but was absent due to his daughter’s wedding.

Dianne Feinstein badgering Lisa Murkowski

Kavanaugh secured enough votes yesterday when Senators Susan Collins (R) and Joe Manchin (D) agreed to support him.

Last night, Sen. Collins delivered an extended defense of Kavanaugh’s record and announced her intention to vote in favor of his confirmation. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) took to Twitter to praise Collins’ “strongly held principles” and to denounce the Left’s threats against Collins:

“Most will never know the full extent of the efforts to intimidate & threaten @SenatorCollins on the #Kavanaugh vote. I am not talking about political pressure or people screaming at her in an elevator. I am talking about vicious, vile & dangerous actions.”

On Twitter, deranged Leftists call Collins a “traitor to women”, a “rape apologist”, and demand she be forever harassed in public as a punishment for her vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

Yesterday, when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed for cloture on Kavanaugh’s nomination, he said:

“This evening, the Senate will receive the results of the FBI’s supplemental background investigation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. This is now the seventh time the FBI has looked into Judge Kavanaugh’s background. And this information comes on top of what has already been one of the most thorough, most exhaustive Senate reviews of any Supreme Court nominee in our nation’s history.

Five days of public hearings. Sixty-five private meetings with Senators. More than 1,200 responses to written questions from members. More than 500,000 pages of documents for review — the most produced for any Supreme Court nomination in history. And the 300-plus opinions Judge Kavanaugh has issued during his 12 years on the D.C. Circuit. And now, Senators will have the evidence collected by this additional [FBI] background investigation for their consideration as well.”

Boom! FBI has completed investigating Kavanaugh!

This afternoon, two senior Senate sources told Fox News the FBI has completed its investigation on sexual allegations against Supreme Court nominee U.S. District Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The FBI’s supplemental background report on Kavanaugh concluded, “There is no corroboration for the allegations made by Dr. Ford or Ms. Ramirez”. The report will be sent to the White House before it goes to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The report will be secured in a Capitol Hill basement room for all 100 senators and 9 staffers to come and read.

It is not clear whether any part of the FBI report will be made public, but Thune acknowledged “some of it will probably make its way out into the public and into the mainstream. But most importantly, at least right now, is that all senators who are going to have the responsibility to vote on this nomination have an opportunity to review it, assess it and come to their own conclusions about what’s in there.”

In a letter today to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Blasey Ford’s legal team said she has not yet heard from the FBI about scheduling an interview with her.

The FBI has not interviewed either Kavanaugh or Ford. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said there is no need to interview either Kavanaugh or Ford, who have each given one media interview and faced questions from the Judiciary Committee, because the FBI “pretty well know what both of them are going to say.”

Sen. John Thune (R-SD), the third-ranking Republican in the Senate, told Fox News’ “The Daily Briefing with Dana Perino” that “obviously,” the FBI report “will enable the process to move forward and we hope that we’re going to have the votes to get [Kavanaugh] confirmed when it’s all said and done.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) set up a procedural vote for as early as Friday on the Kavanaugh nomination. McConnell has filed a petition for a  cloture vote, which if successful would limit debate on the nomination and start the clock ticking on a final 30-hour waiting period before the Senate votes to confirm the nominee. McConnell said, “It’s time to put this sickening display behind us. The Senate will vote on this nomination this week.

Assuming at least 50 senators agree to end debate, Kavanaugh’s final confirmation vote will come Saturday.

Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 advantage in the Senate and can only afford to lose one vote before Kavanaugh’s nomination would be scuppered. Vice President Mike Pence can cast a tiebreaking vote. Thune said, “It’s an audience of three that we have to win over, at least at the moment,” referring to the three RINO senators Jeff Flake (Arizona), Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska). No Republicans, however, have said they will vote against Kavanaugh.

Four senators blocked Senate from passing bill to defund Planned Parenthood

A June 2018 Gallup Poll found that although 60% of Americans support legalized abortion during the first three months of pregnancy, most oppose it in the later stages. Only 28% and 13% still support abortion once a pregnancy reaches, respectively, the second and third trimester. In the third trimester, the unborn baby is often viable outside the womb with medical support.

Put another way, the Gallup Poll found that 40% of Americans — 4 of every 10 — oppose legalized abortion. The population of the United States in 2018 is 327.123 million. That means 130.85 million Americans oppose legalized abortion.

It is bad enough that 4 of every 10 Americans believe abortion is immoral and should not be legalized. We are compelled by our government to give financial support, by way of our taxes, to the killing of unborn human beings.

Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion business in America, kills some 320,000 unborn babies every year, 900 babies every day. Its most recent annual report showed a record income of $1.46 billion — $400 million of which came from taxpayers. As Senator Rand Paul said in his speech on the Senate floor:

“Planned Parenthood received over 400 million dollars of taxpayer money, the government with a wink and a nod tells us that Planned Parenthood doesn’t spend the money on abortions but everybody knows that the taxpayers are really cross-subsidizing Planned Parenthood’s abortion mills.”

LifeNews reports that on Thursday, August 23, 2018, another effort to defund Planned Parenthood — a pro-life amendment sponsored by Sen. Paul that would revoke taxpayer funding for the abortion mill — failed in the U.S. Senate by a narrow 45-48 vote.

Republicans hold a narrow 51-seat majority in the Senate. Were it not for four senators — two Republicans, and two Democrats who had touted themselves as pro-life — the amendment to defund Planned Parenthood would have passed. By their votes against the amendment, these four senators are forcing 130.85 million Americans to subsidize the killing of the unborn with our hard-earned tax dollars:

  1. Susan Collins (R-Maine)
  2. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)
  3. Joe Donnelly (D-Indiana)
  4. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia)

After the vote Thursday, Planned Parenthood leader Dawn Laguens personally thanked Collins and Murkowski on Twitter:

“Huge thank you to @SenateDems, @lisamurkowski, & @SenatorCollins for standing up & protecting access to health care.”

Last year, the Senate also fell short of enough votes to defund Planned Parenthood, in part, because of Collins and Murkowski. In a letter to her constituents last summer, Murkowski vowed that she is “committed” to forcing taxpayers to fund the abortion chain. Earlier this week in an interview with Politico, Collins proclaims her fealty to the abortion mill, “I have voted for 21 years now for funding for Planned Parenthood. And yet, they continue to question my commitment. And that is extremely aggravating and unfair.”

Neither Murkowski nor Collins has indicated if they will support U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Although both pro-abort anti-life senators voted to confirm Justice Neil Gorsuch, they are facing huge pressure from abortion activists to vote against Kavanaugh.

Planned Parenthood has launched a $30 million political spending campaign to “take over Congress” in the November midterms. The only way the abortion business will be defunded completely is if pro-life voters head to the polls this November and provide the pro-life side a few more votes in the Senate to be able to achieve victory.

SIGN THE PETITION! Congress Must De-Fund Planned Parenthood Immediately

RINO Lisa Murkowski Wants Obama to Succeed

Joe Miller and the spoiler

The Senate election in Alaska is still undetermined because of the slow counting of thousands of write-in ballots, but it looks increasingly likely that spoiler Lisa Murkowski may win.
Murkowski had lost the GOP primary to TEA Party favorite Joe Miller. Addicted to power as a member of the bipartisan political ruling class (her father was Alaska’s former senator and governor), Murkowski stayed in the race for the Senate as a write-in candidate, determined to split Alaska’s conservative and independent votes.
In a sit-down interview with CBS’s Katie Couric — she who disdainly called Middle America the “unwashed” –Murkowski exposed her RINO nature for all to see.
She said the message she’s hearing “loud and clear” from Alaskans is COMPROMISE:

“I will tell you, I am not one of those who wants Obama to fail. If he does well, that means the country’s doing well. We don’t have time as a nation to spend all of what we do blocking. We have got to figure out how we get to a point where we can be sitting around the table and talking about these difficult problems and advancing some solutions.”

In other words, Murkowski wants Obama to succeed — in destroying America. Grrrr…. I will say no more before I get myself banned from my own blog, but here’s a hint:

Corruption of Alaska's Senate Election

The election to the Senate in Alaska is still unsettled because some 80,000 write-in ballots and 31,000 absentee ballots, many of which are military votes, are still to be counted. It’s a neck-to-neck race between Republican nominee Joe Miller and sore loser RINO Lisa Murkowski who had lost the GOP primary but insisted on staying in the race as a spoiler write-in candidate.
Now, there is video evidence, aired by FoxNews’ Huckabee, of a federal government contractor at an Alaskan airbase openly urging his employees to write in Murkowski’s name in order to protect funding for their jobs. The contractor even provided cards for the employees to take with them to the polls.
[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzRtMleO2xs]
What this government contractor did is against the law. Federal law prohibits electioneering.
Furthermore, the Miller campaign discovered that Demonrat VP Joe Biden is a good friend of ostensibly Republican Lisa Murkowski. In an interview with the Associated Press, Murkowski bragged that Biden had called and congratualted her. In other words, she is not a true Republican, even less a Conservative. Murkowski instead is a member of the bi-partisan self-designated Political Ruling Class who care about their own interests but have only disdain for We, the “little” People.

Elitist spoiler Lisa Murkowski

Murkowski is a reminder of Thomas Jefferson’s warning to us down the ages:
“If once they [the people] become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress, and Assemblies, Judges, and Governors, shall all become wolves.” -Thomas Jefferson, letter to Edward Carrington, 1787.
Murkowski has friends in high places in DC and Alaska. Her father, Frank Murkowki, was the state’s Senator for 20 years (1982-2002) and its Governor from 2002 to 2006. Lisa’s tentacles evidently extend into Alaska state government because last Friday, the Division of Elections began validating absentee ballots without notifying the Miller campaign. This directly conflicts with the state’s Election Observers’ Handbook that states the Division of Elections must “notify” the campaign “24 hours in advance of the time of ballot review….”
Not only did the Division of Elections not give a 24-hour advance notice, it never even notified Joe Miller, who learned about this from an Alaska Republican Party official on Friday morning after the validation process had already begun. Given that, there is every reason for Joe Miller to wonder about the integrity of the voting and vote-counting process in Alaska.
Joe Miller is appealing to us to help him ensure a fair vote count in Alaska. Please click here to donate!

Bitch Can't Spell

We’ve finally found the really dumb broad in Alaska — and it’s not Sarah Palin.
RINO Sen. Lisa Murkuwski Murkowski lost Alaska’s GOP primary to conservative Joe Miller. So now she’s determined to be a spoiler and split the Republican vote by running as a “write-in” candidate. (See my previous post, Bitch“)
Alas, her write-in campaign is off to a less than stellar start, notes a source who points to the URL at the bottom of this image from her first ad. (Politico)
