NBA getting rid of the word ‘owner’ because it’s racist

Founded in 1946, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is a men’s professional basketball league composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). It is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, and is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world.

The NBA is the only top North American sport that does not have a white majority audience. In 2017, 47% of NBA viewers were Black, 34% were White, 11% were Hispanic, and 8% were Asian.

TMZ reports, June 3, 2019, that “high-ranking sources” from multiple NBA teams told TMZ Sports that they’ve had “high-level conversations about doing away with the term ‘owner’ over the past year” because the term “feels racially insensitive” in a league where the majority of players are black.

At least two NBA teams have already made the switch:

  • The Philadelphia 76ers changed their titles from Owners to Managing Partners, and Co-owners are now called Limited Partners.
  • In Los Angeles, Steve Ballmer — who was billed as Owner for the first couple of years after he took over the Clippers — is now listed as Chairman on the team’s website.

The “conversations” about getting rid of the term “owner” gained steam in late 2018 when Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green appeared on LeBron James‘ show, “The Shop”. Green said, “You shouldn’t say owner,” and proposed that the title be changed to either CEO, Chairman or Majority Shareholder.

“Racially oppressed” Draymond Green receives annual salary of $16.4 million and has an estimated net worth of $20 million.

Ironically, Draymond’s team — the Golden State Warriors — still lists Joe Lacob as the owner of that team.

TMZ was told there’s no real pressure coming from the NBA to change their titles. A spokesperson spokesperson said: “We refer to the owners of our teams as Governors; each team is represented on our Board of Governors.”

Former basketball player Michael Jordan, who’s black, is the principal owner and chairman of the NBA team Charlotte Hornets. Does he get to keep the title “owner”?

Al Sharpton approved: LeBron James says NFL team owners have slave mentality

Birds of a feather…

LeBron being a good progressive and keeping the hate and divide alive and well…

From Yahoo: LeBron James, who has consistently used his platform as one of the most famous men in America to discuss social issues, has said that NFL owners have a “slave mentality”.

The Los Angeles Lakers star made the comments on Friday’s broadcast of his HBO discussion show, The Shop. “In the NFL they got a bunch of old white men owning teams and they got that slave mentality,” James said. “And it’s like, ‘This is my team. You do what the f*ck I tell y’all to do. Or we get rid of y’all.’

James’s comments come after a stormy few seasons in the NFL. Two players, Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid, have filed grievances against the league and its teams’ owners alleging they colluded to keep them out of football due to their stance on social issues. Both men knelt during the national anthem to highlight racial injustice in the United States. Although Reid has now found a team, the Carolina Panthers, this week he said he had been randomly drug tested by the league six times in 11 weeks. Yahoo Sports calculated the chances of that happening were 0.17%.

The NBA, on the other hand, has been praised for being much more progressive on social issues. “The difference between the NBA and the NFL, the NBA is what we believe he [a player] can be. The potential,” James said. “In the NFL, it’s like what can you do for me this Sunday, or this Monday or this Thursday, and if you ain’t it, we moving on.”

James highlighted the work of the NBA’s commissioner, Adam Silver, in making the league a welcoming environment for players. “I’m so appreciative in our league of our commissioner,” James said. “He doesn’t mind us having … a real feeling and to be able to express that. It doesn’t even matter if Adam agrees with what we are saying, he at least wants to hear us out. As long as we are doing it in a very educational, nonviolent way, then he’s absolutely OK with it.”

James has been quick to speak up about social issues in the past. He is a long-time critic of the US president, Donald Trump. In an interview with the web series Uninterrupted in January, James said of Trump: “The number one job in America … is someone who doesn’t understand the people, and really don’t give a f*ck about the people.”

In February, James explained why he was critical of the president: “While we cannot change what comes out of that man’s mouth, we can continue to alert the people that watch us, that listen to us, that this is not the way.”

When thoughts & prayers aren’t enough to end gun violence, wear a t-shirt!

Remember, progressives tell us that “thoughts and prayers” are not enough to end gun violence.

Guess the only solution is to wear a t-shirt that says “Enough.”

From Yahoo:  Last week’s Thousand Oaks mass shooting is still at the top of many people’s minds, and Los Angeles area athletes are no exception. Before the Los Angeles Lakers faced the Atlanta Hawks at the Staples Center, many were spotted wearing tribute shirts with the names of the 12 people murdered at the Borderline Bar & Grill on the back and the word “enough” on the front.

After the game, reporters asked LeBron James to give his thoughts on the shooting, and he obliged.

“Probably the same that went through everybody’s mind: ‘Not again.’ Or ‘Wow.’ ‘What the hell.’ Probably some more explicit terms that I won’t same right here. it’s just how do we clean up this … It all comes back to this gun situation that we have in America and gun violence. I don’t definitely want to go into that right now, but I can do it at a later point. We know that these people are just being able to go and buy guns and do things with them and innocent lives are being taken at young ages. Young ages. You know, when I was younger we didn’t really have to worry about gun violence too much. I mean, if you had a problem with somebody you kind of fist it out and move on. And now, it’s like people are like shooting it out and don’t even have a problem with somebody. They just got a problem with themselves or a problem with the situation they’re in. It’s just very troubling times for everyone and for parents. It’s just how can you be comfortable with sending your kinds [sic} to school or sending them to church or sending them to the movies or sending them to the mall? Those are kind of like the great havens when I was growing up: school, church, go to the mall, go to a sporting event. That was like heaven. You know? And it’s kind of scary at this point in time. So, sorry to go in depth with it. But you guys asked.”

Hey LeBron, when you going to show up in Chiraq wearing that t-shirt?

Oh Noes! LeBron James Won't Stay at Trump Hotel

From Hollywood Reporter: The Cavaliers have made other arrangements for players who do not want to stay at a New York hotel branded by President-elect Donald Trump.
LeBron James and several teammates have decided not to stay at Trump Soho in lower Manhattan this week. The Cavs  booked rooms at the luxury hotel for two days, as the team will play the Knicks on Wednesday.
Cavs general manager David Griffin told the Associated Press that the team has made plans for a “group that wants to be  together elsewhere.” Griffin did not say where the players will be staying.
James publicly endorsed and campaigned for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, who lost the election to Trump. Several of his teammates, including Richard Jefferson and Iman Shumpert, have expressed their disappointment over Trump’s win.

From the link:
“I can’t say I’ve ever been ashamed of our country,” Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said. “Until today.”
“All of a sudden, you’re faced with the reality that the man who’s going to lead you has routinely used racist, misogynist, insulting words,” Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “That’s a tough one. That’s a tough one. I wish him well. I hope he’s a good president. I have no idea what kind of president he’ll be because he hasn’t said anything about what he’s going to do. We don’t know.
The defending NBA champions will arrive in New York on Tuesday after playing in Toronto on Monday night. The Cavs were honored by President Barack Obama last month at the White House for their title, the first for any Cleveland team since 1964.
