Don’t hold your breath waiting for an answer…
Of course there isn’t.
From CNN: Canadian Comedian Samantha Bee told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday that she didn’t think there was a “smug liberal problem.”
The host of the show “Full Frontal” spoke to Tapper on “State of the Union,” fresh from hosting her own alternative White House Correspondents’ dinner where she roasted the press and the President.
Asked by Tapper about the role of comedy in the Trump era, Bee said she and her team “mostly did the show for ourselves.”
“We need catharsis, a place to analyze things in a different way. We see things through a different filter. We just need to break it down,” she said.
Bee said when balancing humor with political commentary, her instinct is always to “lean in the direction of funny.”
“When you’re doing topical comedy you’re walking a razor edge and you don’t want to drop over into the activism side of things too often. You don’t really want to do that at all. We always err on the side of comedy.”
Tapper also asked Bee about a recent column by New York Times writer Ross Douthat, who criticized Bee as the “embodiment” of “ascendant social liberalism” and described her as a “problem,” for the Democratic Party. “So flattering!” Bee said, adding that the column was “one person’s opinion.”
“But is there a smug liberal problem?” asked Tapper. “I don’t think there is,” replied Bee.
“I do the show for me and for people like me, and I don’t care how the rest of the world sees it quite frankly. That’s great. We make a show for ourselves. We put it out to the world. We birth it and then the world receives it however they want to receive it. ”
Leading the Paris procession were world leaders, including François Hollande of France, Angela Merkel of Germany, David Cameron of Great Britain, Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority, King Abdullah II of Jordan (a direct descendant of Islam’s prophet Mohammed), Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia, and the leaders of Mali and Turkey.
As CNN’s Jake Tapper noted:
“The United States, which considers itself to be the most important nation in the world [and a member of NATO], was not represented in this march — arguably one of the most important public demonstrations in Europe in the last generation — except by U.S. Ambassador Jane Hartley, who may have been a few rows back. I didn’t see her.”
Tapper admitted that “as an American: I was ashamed.”
Not to worry.
Rebel Yankee has located Obama!
President Obama on Monday announced a two-year pay freeze for most of the 1.9 million civilians who work for the federal government, as he tried to address concerns over a mushrooming deficit and placate Republicans who have targeted the workforce for big cuts.
“Getting this deficit under control is going to require some broad sacrifices, and that sacrifice must be shared by the employees of the federal government,” Obama said in a White House speech. He called federal workers “patriots who love their country” and said the cut is not just “a line item on a federal ledger.” But he said he is asking federal workers to sacrifice for the country as “they’ve always done.”
…The freeze, which must be approved by Congress, would be the first two-year halt to federal raises in modern history. With health insurance premiums for civil servants set to jump 7.2 percent on average next year and a federal transit subsidy to be cut by half Dec. 31, the plan will amount to a pay cut for many workers….
Civil servants still will be eligible for bonuses and promotions to higher pay grades…. Federal employees were scheduled to receive a 1.4 percent across-the-board raise in 2011.
Sounds good, uh?
Except for one thing:
Employees of the legislative branch — who are FEDERAL government employees the last time I checked — are exempt! Here’s ABC News’ Jake Tapper (h/t American Grand Jury):
There is also the matter of the BLOATING of the federal payroll under Obama, which is expected to burgeon to 2.15 million employees by the end of this year. Washington Post calls it “the largest federal work force in modern history.”
So you’ll have to excuse me for being a skeptical cynic about Obama’s ballyhooed federal pay freeze. I don’t think it’s gonna help one iota with our HUMONGOUS deficit!
