Seattle Police officer being treated with anti-HIV cocktail after stepping on needle in a park

If you’ve read my many blog posts about the homeless crisis in Seattle, this will come as no surprise to you.

From MyNorthwest.com:  A police officer was stuck in the foot with a dirty needle while walking through a Seattle park on patrol this past Monday. Now, he’s receiving intense treatment to protect him from diseases, including HIV and Hepatitis, renewing concerns over police and resident safety in Seattle parks.

“This officer was simply walking through the grassy field of a city park, near where children were playing, when he stepped on the needle, which was hidden in the grass,” Sgt. Rich O’Neil, vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG) told the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH. “The officer was taken to the hospital and is now undergoing ongoing, debilitating treatment to prevent HIV and other diseases.”

The officer works with the Navigation Team, the SPD’s unit that focuses on Seattle homelessness.

According to SPOG, the officer was on a routine walk through of Baker Park, a tiny residential park in the Crown Hill neighborhood. As the officer was walking, he felt a sharp pain between his toes that became so strong, he wasn’t able to stand.

Upon inspection, the officer saw a needle hub on the sole of his work boot. After removing the needle, the officer and his partner immediately traveled to a nearby hospital, along with the needle, so that it could be tested. He was met by colleagues at the hospital, who offered him moral support as he became concerned and was described as in a bit of shock, according to a SPOG source.

The medical protocol following exposure is lengthy and emotional. The officer is currently taking an anti-HIV cocktail, followed by additional tests to see what diseases he may have been exposed to.

Also from the story:

The officer told SPOG that he would rather it be him that got suck, instead of a child enjoying the park. He has kids and fears for their safety even more after this incident.

Just weeks ago, another father, former FBI operative and current Seattle City Council candidate Naveed Jamali, was walking in Seattle, near the waterfront, when his young children found needles and used condoms in the open.”

California Law Lets 12-Yr-Olds Get STD Vaccines w/out Parental Knowledge

Nos. 40 and 41 of the “45 Communist Goals for America” that was entered into the Congressional Record on January 10, 1963, are:

Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce” and “Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents.”

Last Sunday, October 9, 2011, in the name of preventative medical care, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that does just that.
Assembly Bill 499 allows a minor who is 12 years of age or older to consent to medical care related to the prevention of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) — such as vaccines for HPV, HIV and hepatitis — without parental consent or knowledge.
The bill was introduced by Assemblywoman Toni Atkins and co-authored by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma — both Democrats.
Ten other states and the District of Columbia have similar laws allowing such “preventative care” for minors without parental consent.
Critics of the law and advocates for parent’s rights have spoken out against the measure, but to no avail.  President of SaveCalifornia.com, Randy Thomasson said, “[Governor] Brown has no excuse to deny patients essential information and trample parents’ consent for their children, who lack the brain development to make big decisions like this.  It is unfair and wrong for AB 499 to coerce children behind their parents’ backs, when calling or emailing a child’s mother or father to set an appointment is the respectful way to communicate vital information and answer important questions.”
As blogger Giacomo notes:

“In the United States, parents have a legal obligation to care for and provide for all minor age children.  If a minor causes damage to someone else’s property, the parents are legally responsible for restitution.  In most states, a parent cannot evict a child under the age of 18; 16 in some states.  In cases of divorce and child support, one of the parents are generally liable to pay monthly child support to the other until the child reaches 18 and in some states graduate from high school.

Yet when it comes to one of the most personal, moral and religious subjects of sexually promiscuity, parents have absolutely no rights to know or control their minor child’s activities. It’s because of the need of the liberal socialists to undermine and erode both religious and family values of a people in order to set up a socialist government.

What’s even more scary is that these laws coincide with similar laws being pushed by the United Nations to give complete sexual freedom to all children down to the age of 10 to 12.”

By the way, you’d be interested to know that:

  • No. 11 of the “45 Communist Goals for America” is “Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces”;
  • No. 15 is “Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.”
  • No. 17 is “Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum.”
  • No. 20 is “Infiltrate the press.”
  • No. 26 is “Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.”
  • No. 28 is “Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.”
  • No. 29 is “Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.”

I can go on, but you get the picture….
To quote the kids: “Are we there yet?”

Why Pancreatic Cancer is so Deadly

Actor Patrick Swayze died from it. The recent death of Apple visionary Steve Jobs is putting a renewed spot-light on the deadly disease, pancreatic cancer.
Jobs had a rare, less aggressive form of the disease and, with the help of a liver transplant and his vast financial resources, was able to live a good 7 years.
But for many, a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is like a death knell because only 5% of pancreatic-cancer victims live 5 or more years after diagnosis.
According to an article in Market Watch, in the United States, an estimated 42,470 people received that terrible diagnosis in 2009. Of the newly-diagnosed, about 75% die within the first year no matter what treatment they receive, and patients with metastatic disease may survive just 3 to 6 months, according to the American Cancer Society.
That’s what happened to a colleague in my former university. She was only in her late 50s and appeared to be healthy. Then came news that she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and – wham! – in just 2 months, she was gone.
While most other cancers have seen a rise in survival rates, the rate for pancreatic cancer has stayed steady for the past 30 years.
I’ve wondered why pancreatic cancer is so deadly.
A major reason is the lack of symptoms. Here’s an explanation from the UK’s Daily Mail:

The pancreas is a gland situated high in your abdomen that produces most digestive enzymes and insulin that regulates blood sugar levels.
As pancreatic cancer causes few symptoms in its early stages, the condition is often not diagnosed until the condition is relatively advanced and almost impossible to cure.
The length of time between diagnosis and death is typically short, at usually less than six months. In the UK around one in six patients survive their disease beyond 12 months. Steve Jobs revealed in 2004 that he had a rare, less aggressive form of the disease called islet cell neuroendocrine tumour. This allowed him to live with the disease for seven years.
Symptoms of the condition such as nausea and fever can be caused by a variety of conditions making it especially difficult to diagnose. Other symptoms include weight loss, jaundice (yellowing of the skin) and stomach pain, although again they could be caused by other conditions such as hepatitis.
A doctor who suspects pancreatic cancer may feel the abdomen for unusual swelling, however because the pancreas is located behind the stomach it is difficult for them to feel for tumours.
An ultrasound scan can often miss pancreatic cancer as ultrasound waves are not good at penetrating deep into body tissues. A CT or MRI scan provides a more detailed and accurate picture.
If a tumour is suspected surgeons perform a laparoscopy (passing a thin camera inside the abdomen). If a biopsy confirms cancer surgeons will try and remove the tissue. This is the only way to cure the cancer but is only suitable for one in five patients where the tumour has not progressed to wrapping itself around important blood vessels.
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can help shrink the tumour and reduce the pain but not cure the condition.
