2 million Brazilians protest against gov’t corruption, spending, and taxes

Imagine the entire population of Hawaii — every man, woman, child, and transgender — showing up for a violent protest.

How about the entire population of Hawaii (pop. in 2012: 1,392,313) AND Washington, D.C. (pop. 632,323)?

That’s how many people demonstrated last Thursday night in 80 cities across Brazil.

And yet, did you see this on the alphabet TV news?

Jonathan Watts reports for the UK’s The Guardian, June 21, 2013:

Brazil‘s president, Dilma Rousseff, and key ministers are to hold an emergency meeting on Friday following a night of protests that saw Rio de Janeiro and dozens of other cities echo with percussion grenades and swirl with teargas as riot police scattered the biggest demonstrations in more than two decades.

The protests were sparked last week by opposition to rising bus fares, but they have spread rapidly to encompass a range of grievances, as was evident from the placards. “Stop corruption. Change Brazil”; “Halt evictions”; “Come to the street. It’s the only place we don’t pay taxes“; “Government failure to understand education will lead to revolution”.

Rousseff’s office said she had cancelled a trip to Japan next week.

A former student radical herself, Rousseff has tried to mollify the protesters by praising their peaceful and democratic spirit. Partly at her prompting, Rio, São Paulo and other cities have reversed the increase in public transport fares, but this has failed to quell the unrest.

A vast crowd – estimated by the authorities at 300,000 and more than a million by participants – filled Rio’s streets, one of a wave of huge nationwide marches against corruption, police brutality, poor public services and excessive spending on the World Cup.

A minority of protesters threw stones, torched cars and pulled down lamp-posts. Police responded by firing volleys of pepper spray and rubber bullets into the crowd and up onto overpasses where car drivers and bus passengers were stuck in traffic jams. At least 40 people were injured in the city and many more elsewhere.

Simultaneous demonstrations were reported in at least 80 cities, with a total turnout that may have been close to 2 million. An estimated 110,000 marched in São Paulo, 80,000 in Manaus, 50,000 in Recife and 20,000 in Belo Horizonte and Salvador.

Clashes were reported in the Amazon jungle city of Belem, Porto Alegre in the south, Campinas north of São Paulo and Salvador.

Thirty-five people were injured in the capital Brasilia, where 30,000 people took to the streets. In São Paulo, one man was killed when a frustrated car driver rammed into the crowd. Elsewhere countless people, including many journalists, were hit by rubber bullets.

The vast majority of those involved were peaceful. Many wore Guy Fawkes masks, emulating the global Occupy campaign. Others donned red noses – a symbol of a common complaint that people are fed up being treated as clowns.

“There are no politicians who speak for us,” said Jamaime Schmitt, an engineer. “This is not just about bus fares any more. We pay high taxes and we are a rich country, but we can’t see this in our schools, hospitals and roads.” Many in the mostly young, middle class crowd were experiencing their first large protest.

Matheus Bizarria, who works for the NGO Action Aid, said people had reached the limit of their tolerance about longstanding problems that the Confederations Cup and World Cup have brought into focus because of the billions of reals spent on new stadiums rather than public services. Rio is also due to host a papal visit to World Youth Day next month, and the Olympics in 2016.

“It’s totally connected to the mega-events,” Bizarria said. “People have had enough, but last year only 100 people marched against a bus price rise. There were 1,000 last week and 100,000 on Monday. Now we hope for a million.”

Initially the mood in Rio was peaceful. When a handful of people began tearing down posters for the Confederations Cup, the rest of the crowd sat down around them and shamed them with shouts of “no violence” and “no vandalism”.

But later protesters pulled down security cameras, smashed bus stops and torched cars. Every hoarding that advertised the Confederations Cup was destroyed.

Police had increased their numbers more than 10-fold from Monday, and were quickly on the offensive.

After a confrontation near the city hall, they drove back the protesters, who fled coughing and with tears streaming down their cheeks. At least one person was hit by rubber bullets, and showed the bruise on his leg where he was hit.

Some were furious that the police action seemed indiscriminate. “Where we had been tranquil, then suddenly they started firing gas into the crowd. People were scared and appalled,” said Alessandra Sampaio, one of the protesters. “They are cowards. They wanted to disperse the crowd never mind who it was. I’m very angry. It was a real abuse of power.”

Victor Bezerra, a law student, said the police action was like something from the dictatorship era. “These are bad days for Brazil. The police were acting just like they did 30 years ago.”

The crowd were driven into side streets and back towards the central station by lines of police backed by officers carrying shotguns on horseback and motorbikes.

“Look at this. It’s hard to believe. Terrible!”, said Ellie Lopes, a 22-year-old passerby, as she surveyed the debris and flames.

Riot police eventually cleared the entire central area, but they were still dispersing gatherings in the Lapa music and bar district late into the night. As helicopters buzzed overhead, they fired teargas into the crowded square next to a concert by the band Cannibal Corpse. Hotdog kiosk vendors found themselves with sore and streaming eyes, inadvertently pushed onto a moving frontline.

Despite the crackdown, many said they would return to the streets for the next demonstration, planned for Saturday [that’s today].

Political corruption. Wasteful government spending. Oppressive taxes. Public Government schools that aren’t working. A president who’s a former student radical.

Sound familiar?

I wonder when the American people finally will have had enough . . . .

Groups & individuals targeted by Obama's IRS witchhunt

Eye of Obama
The mission of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is to collect taxes from individuals and groups, but to do so fairly by applying the the tax law with integrity and without prejudice. According to IRS Policy Statement 1-1, IRS employees accomplish this mission by being impartial and handling tax matters in a manner that will promote public confidence.
It is not the mission of the IRS to use political criteria to target certain individuals and groups for special scrutiny or audit.
On May 10, 2013, Americans learned that, instead of being apolitical, the Obama regime’s IRS had singled out for special scrutiny the tax documents of some 75 groups who, for the lack of a better term, are not fans of President Lucifer.

That day, the IRS issued an apology to conservative political groups — groups with names that had words like “tea party” and “patriot” — for having been subjected to extra scrutiny. But the IRS insisted that “Mistakes were made initially, but they were in no way due to any political or partisan rationale.”

Since last Friday, each new day brings more information of the IRS’s misdeeds. They include the following:

  • The IRS witch hunt began in April 2010, with the formation of a team of specialists within the IRS called the Determination Unit. (Source: ZeroHedge)
  • High-level Obama regime officials were involved. (Source: ZeroHedge)
  • By June 2011, the IRS expanded its criteria for extra scrutiny beyond “Tea Party,” “patriot,” and “9/12 Project” (referring to a group started by Glenn Beck) groups to include also organizations critical of government spending, government debt, taxes, and “how the country is run,” as well as groups seeking to “make America a better place to live” and to educate Americans about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. (Source: FoxNews)
  • The IRS also targeted a pro-life group, Cherish Life Ministries, that provides help to a coalition of churches that supports mothers struggling with unexpected pregnancies, promotes abstinence and advocates for an end to abortion. (Source: WND) H/t FOTM’s joworth
  • The IRS was targeting the Jews, too! An IRS agent told the pro-Israel Jewish organization Z Street that the applications of Israel-related organizations were assigned to “a special unit in the D.C. office to determine whether the organization’s activities contradict the Obama’s Administration’s public policies.” (Source: Atlas Shrugs)
  • Even worse, the IRS went beyond using political criteria to single out certain groups for extra scrutiny. The IRS violated confidentiality by giving the confidential applications for tax-exempt status of nine conservative groups to a George Soros-funded journalism group, ProPublica. (Source: Breitbart)
  • The IRS also leaked the 2008 confidential financial documents of the National Organization for Marriage, a pro-traditional marriage organization, to the leftwing Human Rights Campaign (HRC). Those documents were published on the Huffington Post on March 30, 2012. Joe Solmonese, HRC’s president and a co-chairman of Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, then used the leaked document to attack GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney. • Wayne Allyn Root — the Libertarian Party’s 2008 VP candidate who attended Columbia University in the same years as Pres. Lucifer but has publicly stated he’d never met his supposed fellow-student nor does he know any Columbia alumnus who had — was also a target of the IRS’s unusual audits, beginning in January 2011, despite a “spotless” 30-year tax record. Root believes the order to audit him came from Obama himself: “I believe this is not rogue agents, who would be risking their pension and careers.” (Source: WND)
  • Televangelist Billy Graham endorsed Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election. Now his son, Franklin Graham, has come forth with the revelation that in the midst of the heated presidential campaign in September 2012, the IRS notified the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the family’s international humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Purse, that it was conducting a “review” of their activities for tax year 2010. (Source: Politico)
  • In 2010, the IRS targeted for auditing Dr. Anne Hendershott, a devout Catholic professor and author whose writings are critical of Obama and Soros-funded “liberal” Catholic groups. The IRS demanded to know who was paying her and “what their politics were.” Although Hendershott and her husband (who brings in the vast majority of the family’s income) file joint tax returns, only she was audited. The audit was so emotionally and financially expensive that she was frightened into silence. (Source: The Blaze)
  • Dr. James Dobson says his Christian FamilyTalk group was also targeted. The IRS threatened the group’s non-profit status because it didn’t represent “all views.” (Source: WND)
  • The Catholic League was notified, just weeks after Obama was elected president in 2008, by the IRS that it was under investigation for violating the IRS Code on political activities as it relates to 501(c)(3) organizations. It was the George Soros-funded leftwing United that contacted the IRS to launch its investigation of the Catholic League. (Source: America Conservative 2 Conservative)
  • A 180-year-old Baptist newspaper, The Biblical Recorder, was targeted by the IRS for extra scrutiny. In summer 2012, the paper gained national attention after it published an interview with Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy who said he supports traditional family values. The paper also published ads from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association — which also was targeted by the IRS. (Source: Fox News)

Accountant explains U.S. budget-debt disaster in 5 min.

This is a NON-PARTISAN video produced by an accountant, Hal Mason, who retired after 27 years with IBM.

In this video, Mason does something that all the handsomely-paid economists and pundits you see in the media seem unable to do.

Mason looks at the federal government’s budget, revenues and expenses, and very clearly and simply explains our national fiscal and debt problem in 5½ minutes.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=EW5IdwltaAc]

My only disagreement with Mr. Mason is that he left out one thing in his proposed recipe to fix America’s Titanic-sized nightmare:

In addition to drastically cutting spending and drastically reducing the size of government, we must also grow the economy by creating more jobs, which means more Americans work, which means they’ll pay taxes, which translates into more revenue (income) for government.

That’s what Romney-Ryan propose to do. The POS will make our disaster even more disastrous by propelling us over the cliff, faster. That’s the real meaning of his campaign motto of “Forward.”

Alas, too many Americans are willingly blind, deaf, and in a massive state of denial. It’s a blindness so massive it’s no longer simply a psychological phenomenon. The blindness is rooted in spiritual darkness.

“…you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people.” -Ezekiel 12:2

How Much Govt Debt Will Cost You In Taxes

NOTE: This was originally posted on Sept. 24, but I’m keeping it on our frontpage until November 2, as a reminder of what we need to do. I welcome readers to treat this thread as an Open Thread.

When we see a figure of $13.5 trillion for our country’s total national debt, our eyes have a way of glazing over. The human brain simply cannot absorb or comprehend a figure as humongous as $13,502,281,890,472 (as of 5:10pm, west coast time, Sept. 24, 2010).
By next year, 2012, total US debt will exceed our GDP — America’s total economic output. In 10 years, the federal debt will be even more incomprehensible: $23,089,009,030,226!
Thanks to beloved fellow DCG, there’s a website, MyGovCost.org, that helps us translate those astronomical figures into something we can better understand. It enables us to calculate just how much our government’s runaway spending and resultant liability (debt) will cost each of us in future taxes. It’s your personal Government Cost Calculator.
By simply providing your education, age, and income, you’ll find out the depressing truth about:

  • Your average future monthly taxes,
  • Your lifetime federal taxes, and
  • Your lifetime alternate return (what your taxes could have earned if you invested the money instead of fork it over to the robber government).

Of course, this pertains only to the 53% of us who actually pay income taxes! How are you liking that Hope and Change?

H/t beloved fellow Microserf for the above video!
