Bill Gates, Emma Watson and Oprah Winfrey among ten stars with colossal carbon footprints

From Daily Mail: Harry Potter actress Emma Watson has been named by researchers as a greenhouse gas ‘super-emitter’.

Swedish academics analysed the carbon footprints of ten famous people who travel the globe.

Miss Watson, the only Briton on the list, had the tenth worst environmental impact out of the group of celebrities selected, based on their social media accounts. She flew 14 times in 2017 and travelled 42,253 miles, all on scheduled airlines, spending 71 hours in the air, the researchers calculated.

Her carbon footprint from flying alone was 15.1 tons of CO2 – three times that of the global average from all activities.

In her work as a United Nations spokesman, Miss Watson has called for everyone to help the world achieve the UN’s 17 global goals – which include ending extreme poverty, fighting inequality and stopping climate change.

Topping the list of celebrity greenhouse gas super-emitters was Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, with a whopping carbon footprint of more than 1,600 tons of CO2. He took 59 flights in 2017, travelling 213,130 miles, mostly on his private Bombardier BD-700 jet, which he describes as his ‘big splurge’ and which seats 19 passengers.

The figures, published in the journal Annals of Tourism Research, are estimates for 2017 based on the celebrities’ pictures and posts on their social media accounts such as Twitter and Instagram, so may not cover all their travel, the academics admit.

Lead author Steffan Gossling, of Lund University said he was inspired by fellow Swede Greta Thunberg.

The teenage climate change activist has resolved not to fly, showing that celebrities do not need to leap on jets so frequently, he said. He added: ‘As Greta Thunberg affirmed early on, ‘the bigger your carbon footprint, the bigger your moral duty’.’

Miss Watson, one of only three on the celebrity list to stick to scheduled air travel, supports environmental projects to compensate for her jet-setting. A spokesman for the actress said: ‘Emma pays to offset all of her air travel carbon emissions through ClimateCare.org.’

Hollyweird stars who are “moving toward reducing their carbon footprints”

Earth Day is upon us!

That means the spin comes out of Hollyweird to highlight actors who claim to care so much about the environment while they spew massive carbon emissions to lecture us all about “climate change.”

Witness excerpts from this fantastic BS article from Hollywood Reporter:

Ben Affleck raising awareness of the benefits of flying via private jets…

Ben Affleck co-founded the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010 and has been using the organization to raise awareness of threatened natural resources in the region. According to its website, the initiative revolves around the philosophy that local, community-based approaches are essential to creating a sustainable and successful society in eastern Congo. In partnership with Matt Damon’s nonprofit, Water.org, Affleck used his organization to support clean water initiatives in Africa.

The “reality” of climate change doesn’t affect the size of Cameron’s Malibu home…

In a stance against President Trump’s remarks about climate change, director James Cameron targeted and rebutted the president’s claims in the documentary Not Reality TV. The film referenced Trump’s “reckless denial” of climate change and showed a clip of the GOP nominee calling global warming a “hoax.” James Cameron spoke to The Hollywood Reporter back in 2016 about why he felt that making this documentary was necessary. “We made this film to show the reality of climate change — how it’s directly affecting millions of people each day,” said Cameron. “As I’ve said before, to save our planet we need to mobilize like we did during World War II — the threat to our country and children is that severe.”

Dubbed “the greenest guy in Hollywood,” Leonardo DiCaprio has made significant strides in conservation. He has made investments in a vegan meat company and donated millions to help wildlife conservation and fight against climate change. DiCaprio has also invested in Allbirds, a sustainable shoe brand. For all of his efforts, the United Nations honored him with the title of Messenger of Peace on Climate Change.

Back in 2011, Emma Watson collaborated with designer Alberta Ferretti to create an eco-friendly clothing line, Pure Threads. Since then, Watson has been intentional about her involvement in the sustainable fashion movement. She launched the Instagram account @the_press_tour specifically to share about her outfits she wore on the press tour for Beauty and the Beast. In captions, the actress educated her followers on the brand’s history and shared about their environmentally friendly standards.
