Liberal logic: Cynthia Nixon wants single-payer health care for NY but you have to “pass it to figure out how to fund it”

Imagine going to your boss with a great idea for the company and then saying you don’t know how to fund it.

From Fox News: In her quest to become New York’s next governor, Cynthia Nixon has advocated for a single-payer health care system in the state – something studies have shown would be a costly endeavor.

The proposed New York Health Act (NYHA), which would establish universal health care for everyone in the state, including undocumented immigrants illegal aliens, would require the state’s tax revenue to increase by about 156 percent by 2022, according to a study by the RAND Corp. But it also found state spending on total health care under NYHA would be slightly lower – about 3 percent – by 2031 than under the current system.

Nixon recently told the New York Daily News editorial board she did not yet have a plan to pay for single-payer.

“Pass it and then figure out how to fund it,” Nixon said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who Nixon is challenging in the Democratic primary next week, has said it should be up to the federal government to pass a universal health care system. During a debate between the two candidates last month, Cuomo said the NYHA was good “in theory,” but would cost more than New York’s annual budget to implement it “in the long-term,” according to the Albany Times Union.

Nixon, on the other hand, has said a single-payer system will save the state and New Yorkers money overall.

There is widespread disagreement over how much it would cost to implement a single-payer health care system. Supporters say it would cut excessive administrative costs compared to those incurred by private insurers. But critics, including most Republicans, warn the savings would be less dramatic than expected – and the system would cost too much.

Joe White, president of the Council for Affordable Health Coverage, has estimated that with single-payer “costs and taxes will rise, or patient access will be severely diminished – turning America’s medical system into a third-world product.”

The Medicare-for-all bill proposed earlier this year by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., was estimated to cost $32.6 trillion over 10 years by a Mercatus Center at George Mason University study.

The term “single-payer health care” denotes only one entity bears the financial responsibility of health care – the government. Under this system, the government would be solely responsible for covering health care costs.

“The basic idea of single-payer is to cover everybody with a single government program, and that program would basically cover all the doctors and hospitals,” Dr. Adam Gaffney, an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, told Fox News.

As the Times Union reported, the NYHA has continuously been introduced by Democrats in the state Assembly every year since 1992 but has been unsuccessful in the Senate.

Full-blown TDS: Gov. Cuomo to sue President Trump over hurricane response in Puerto Rico

Hey New Yorkers: This is your tax dollars at work.

Maybe the good mayor should be asking the Puerto Rican bureaucrats what’s up with the report from the New York Times about the containers of hurricane donations found rotting in a Puerto Rico parking lot?

From NY Post: Gov. Cuomo vowed Sunday to sue President Trump over the federal response to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico — accusing the president of violating the Constitution by abandoning residents of the American commonwealth.

Just days after vowing not to seek the White House in 2020, Cuomo repeatedly bashed Trump, portraying him as a racist bully during a speech at a predominantly Hispanic church in The Bronx.

Cuomo invoked both Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico and his defense of white nationalists who staged a deadly rally last year in Charlottesville, Va. “Somebody has to stand up to this president. He is a bully,” Cuomo said.

“You know how they handle a bully in The Bronx? He puts a finger your chest, you put one right back.”

Cuomo also said Trump “never tried” to help Puerto Rican victims of last year’s Hurricane Maria, which struck the island on Sept. 20, saying, “They got a different level of care than Texas and Florida and other states.”

We’re going to hold ‘King’ Trump to the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution said equal protection under the law. Puerto Rico did not receive equal protection under the law,” Cuomo said.

“We are going to sue President Trump. We are going to show this bully president that the law is the law.”

Cuomo, who got a standing ovation from the 300-plus congregants at the Heavenly Vision Christian Center, did not provide details of his planned legal action, or take questions afterward.

Trump last week lauded his administration’s handling of Hurricane Maria, a day after Gov. Ricardo “Ricky” Rossello Nevares raised the official storm-related death toll from 64 to 2,975.

“I think we did a fantastic job in Puerto Rico,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday. “We’re still helping Puerto Rico.”

Cuomo — currently seeking a third term in office — was joined at Sunday’s appearance by officials including New York Secretary of State Rosanna Rosado, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and US Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights).

During his only debate with Sept. 13 Democratic primary challenger and former “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon, Cuomo last week promised to serve a full four years in office if re-elected.

“The only caveat is if God strikes me dead,” he said Wednesday.

A progressive bastion: Cynthia Nixon promises to make New York a "real" sanctuary state

It’s the demorat way…
From Daily Mail: Cynthia Nixon has promised to turn New York into ‘a real sanctuary state’ for undocumented migrants illegal aliens in a swipe at Andrew Cuomo, her rival for the Democratic nomination.
The ex-Sex and the City actress areas including New York City for already adopting so-called ‘sanctuary’ legislation but blamed Cuomo, the current governor, for failing to take it up on a statewide level.
This and similar pro-immigrant measures would help turn the state into a ‘progressive bastion’, Nixon said during a speech in Rochester on Thursday.
‘All of these things that we should have done and that New Yorkers want us do, that’s why I am running.
‘Times up on progressive change and waiting for progressive change in New York,’ Nixon said, according to a report in the New York Daily News.
In the same speech Nixon also demanded more money for schools and renewable energy, and new laws to create a single-tier health system.
The New York Assembly passed sanctuary state legislation last year, but this was thrown out in the Republican-controlled senate.
Cuomo has been accused of preventing sanctuary legislation from going through the Senate by allowing a controversial power-sharing deal between Republicans and a breakaway group of Democrats.
The Independent Democratic Conference joined Republicans in a ‘majority coalition’ in return for leadership positions and lucrative stipends. It lasted for seven years before ending earlier this month.
New York City passed a bill in October 2017 ruling that no state money would be used to help enforce federal immigration legislation.
Other areas that have adopted similar legislation in the state include Albany, Ithaca, Wayne County, Omondaga County, Franklin County and St Lawrence County.
Cuomo hit back against Nixon’s criticism, saying: ‘I think we have the most progressive record in the country in this state.’
Sanctuary legislation has been heavily criticised by Republican legislators.
At a roundtable on the issue in March, President Trump accused cities that fail to cooperate with immigration authorities of putting the nation at risk by releasing ‘thousands of criminal aliens’ who should be deported. ‘In many cases they are very bad actors. We have gang members, we have predators, rapists, killers – a lot of bad people,’ he said.
Earlier this week, Iowa became the latest Republican-led state to propose legislation which would withhold money from local governments that don’t comply with federal immigration laws.
A bill outlining an expansive immigration enforcement plan is expected to receive final legislative approval this week.
