The Guardian: Want to fight climate change? Have fewer babies!

The Guardian’s photo of choice/Stop Images

Notice the picture that The Guardian chose to use: it’s only white babies. What are they trying to tell us?
From The Guardian: The greatest impact individuals can have in fighting climate change is to have one fewer child, according to a new study that identifies the most effective ways people can cut their carbon emissions.
The next best actions are selling your car, avoiding long flights (paging Leo), and eating a vegetarian diet. These reduce emissions many times more than common green activities, such as recycling, using low energy light bulbs or drying washing on a line. However, the high impact actions are rarely mentioned in government advice and school textbooks, researchers found.
Carbon emissions must fall to two tonnes of CO2 per person by 2050 to avoid severe global warming, but in the US and Australia emissions are currently 16 tonnes per person and in the UK seven tonnes. “That’s obviously a really big change and we wanted to show that individuals have an opportunity to be a part of that,” said Kimberly Nicholas, at Lund University in Sweden and one of the research team.
The new study, published in Environmental Research Letters, sets out the impact of different actions on a comparable basis. By far the biggest ultimate impact is having one fewer child, which the researchers calculated equated to a reduction of 58 tonnes of CO2 for each year of a parent’s life.
The figure was calculated by totting up the emissions of the child and all their descendants, then dividing this total by the parent’s lifespan. Each parent was ascribed 50% of the child’s emissions, 25% of their grandchildren’s emissions and so on.
“We recognise these are deeply personal choices. But we can’t ignore the climate effect our lifestyle actually has,” said Nicholas. “It is our job as scientists to honestly report the data. Like a doctor who sees the patient is in poor health and might not like the message ‘smoking is bad for you’, we are forced to confront the fact that current emission levels are really bad for the planet and human society.”
“In life, there are many values on which people make decisions and carbon is only one of them,” she added. “I don’t have children, but it is a choice I am considering and discussing with my fiance. Because we care so much about climate change that will certainly be one factor we consider in the decision, but it won’t be the only one.”

Bill Nye becomes science warrior in Netflix series

bill nye
It’s Hollyweird…a faux scientist can become a real one in the land of make believe.
From CNN: Can Bill Nye really save the world? Probably not by preaching to the choir, which doesn’t make his half-hour Netflix show “Bill Nye Saves the World” any less noteworthy as a breezy blow struck on behalf of science, despite a few structural miscalculations.
The title alone speaks volumes: Premiering more than 20 years after “Bill Nye the Science Guy” started on PBS, the new series is pitched primarily toward adults, casting the bow-tie-wearing Nye as an advocate and science warrior, trying to beat back the anti-scientific thought and quackery that’s prevalent, especially within the political sphere.
Nye turns his attention to a different topic in each installment. They include the need to vaccinate children, the reality of climate change (inevitably) and applying a “Quack-O-Meter” to alternative medicines.
The episodes feature the host engaging in low-key, roundtable discussions with experts, and also taped pieces — dispatching a correspondent to India, for example, to document the success vaccination has registered there in preventing polio. Nye’s explanations are clear, simple and often funny, capitalizing on a sort-of nerd-chic personality that’s well suited to the program’s micro-budget, including perhaps the world’s tiniest studio audience.
The producers, however, apparently felt pressure to up the ante on entertainment value, and rather unfortunately chose to add what amount to little comedy sketches to illustrate their points. Those segments range from celebrity cameos (Zach Braff drops by to rail about the climate) to having different actors portray various diseases, modeling T-shirts with names like “POLIO” and “INFLUENZA.”
These vignettes are harmlessly goofy but also wholly unnecessary, feeling like a form of pandering in a series that seeks to arm its audience with greater scientific knowledge.
Like astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Nye has a lot to offer at this moment in time, when there’s such a strong, politically motivated culture of science denial. His eagerness to deliver straight talk on these matters — from asking whether vaccinations should be mandatory to lambasting the U.S. for failing to lead on climate change — will surely feel like a tonic to those share his concerns.
While “Bill Nye Saves the World” is a relatively modest enterprise by Netflix’s standards, it is, overall, an admirable addition to its lineup. If it’s not quite a rescue mission, Nye appears to have taken to heart the concept of trying to provide a small beacon of light rather than just cursing the darkness.

Agenda 21: Rio+20 and ICLEI Hypocrites

ICLEI Members Admit “Bait and Switch”
6/18/2012   Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
To advance public action on global warming, participants attending the ICLEI World Congress admitted today that they are deliberately employing new terminology to misdirect opponents and gain acceptance of their efforts to reduce energy use and greenhouse gases. By utilizing terms like “sustainability” and “sustainable development,” the group wants to mask its objectives and disarm would-be critics who might otherwise oppose their agenda, ICLEI attendees confided with CFACT representatives at the conference.
Huxley Lawler, Executive Coordinator of Environment and Climate Change of the Gold Coast City Council in Australia (an ICLEI member), told CFACT Executive Director Craig Rucker bluntly that we don’t use the term climate change anymore. It’s sustainable development.” Rucker and CFACT staffer Abdul Kamara confirmed this in conversations with other delegates, including Paul Chambers, a Sustainability Manager for the Auckland Council in New Zealand. Chambers said it is important to use inexact environment protection terminology when dealing with conservative governments…….

"Those Diabolical Tea Partiers Ruin Our Meetings" Cries Urban Planner

Disrupting the Delphi Technique is Working

The following are small excerpts from a much longer article by an Urban Planner -Smart Growth guru complaining about how the Tea Party is ruining everything!

I highly recommend reading it as a quick pick-me-up for those discouraged in the Agenda 21 battle.    There are tons of sassy comments from ornery tea partiers!   ~LTG

How the Tea Party Is Upending Urban Planning

…Across the country, Tea Party activists have been storming planning meetings of all kinds, opposing various plans by local and regional government having anything to do with density, smart growth, sustainability or urbanism. In California, Tea Party activists gained enough signatures for a ballot measure repealing the state’s baseline environmental regulations, while also targeting the Senate Bill 375, the 2008 law that seeks to combat climate change by promoting density and regional planning.
…We’ve spent a lot of time and effort on fostering civic engagement, through a program for mediating land use disputes, or helping community residents visualize future scenarios. Since Jacobs, giving people a voice has been paramount in planning. Local Tea Party leaders attack those kinds of efforts as a ruse – that planners have draped the public process with the trappings of citizen input, while in fact all the decisions to promote smart growth have already been made. Some might wonder whether there’s some truth to that.
Yet, as in national politics, the Tea Party view doesn’t leave room for compromise. Even the most open-minded and free-speech supporting planner can’t operate when the framework for the dialogue itself has been invalidated. Where does one go from there? The skirmishes at town halls around the country over the past year or so means that planners will have to try even harder to make their case. But in the mean time, the chairman of that sleepy planning board hearing might be eying the exits, looking for a black helicopter, to make a run for it.       Full Article

Agenda 21 In One Easy Lesson

Awareness of Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development is racing across the nation as citizens in community after community are learning what their city planners are actually up to. As awareness grows, I am receiving more and more calls for tools to help activists fight back. Many complain that elected officials just won’t read detailed reports or watch long videos. “Can you give us something that is quick, and easy to read that we can hand out,” I’m asked.
So here it is. A one page, quick description of Agenda 21 that fits on one page. I’ve also included for the back side of your hand out a list of quotes for the perpetrators of Agenda 21 that should back up my brief descriptions.

Where did Agenda 21 come from daddy? Well, honey, it all started with a man named Maurice Strong

Canadian internationalist and Rockefeller errand boy, Maurice Strong, is the father of Agenda 21.  This plan has been in the works since the early 1970s;  premised on climate change, the old Rockefeller hobby horse — population control, redistribution of wealth and social justice. ~LTG

Al Gore Hissy Fit – Recorded for Our Delight

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKiepplqmow]
Verbatim Text provided on Michelle Malkin’s website:

The model of media manipulation used then [cigarette companies delaying implementation of the surgeon general’s report on the hazards of smoking], Gore said, “was transported whole cloth into the climate debate. And some of the exact same people — I can go down a list of their names — are involved in this. And so what do they do? They pay pseudo-scientists to pretend to be scientists to put out the message: ‘This climate thing, it’s nonsense. Man-made CO2 doesn’t trap heat. It may be volcanoes.’ Bullshit! ‘It may be sun spots.’ Bullshit! ‘It’s not getting warmer.’ Bullshit!” Gore exclaimed.
“When you go and talk to any audience about climate, you hear them washing back at you the same crap over and over and over again,” he continued. “There’s no longer a shared reality on an issue like climate even though the very existence of our civilization is threatened. People have no idea! … It’s no longer acceptable in mixed company, meaning bipartisan company, to use the goddamn word climate. It is not acceptable. They have polluted it to the point where we cannot possibly come to an agreement on it.”

Kiss of Death: Gore Loves Romney

Real Conservatives already know 2012 candidate Mitt Romney is a RINO.

But many Republicans are still deluded, or Romney’s poll numbers wouldn’t be so high. So this information is for all you sheeple Repubs out there.

In his first townhall meeting, in New Hampshire, since announcing he’s running — again — for the presidency, Romney said “he believes the world is getting warmer and that humans are contributing to that pattern.”

That got an enthusiastic knod of approval from none other than the phony Green guru, Al Gore, who owns four luxury mansions, travels in carbon-burning jet planes, and became a multimillionaire from peddling his Manmade Global Warming tripe.

This is what Gore wrote on his Al Gore’s Blog:

Good for Mitt Romney — though we’ve long passed the point where weak lip-service is enough on the Climate Crisis

June 15, 2011 : 12:49 PM

Yea, baby.

Way to go, Mitt Romney!

Top 10 Reasons to Surrender Property & Freedom

The TOP TEN Reasons to Surrender all our Property and Freedom to Environmentalist Regulators

March 21, 2011 by Doris Grupa

We stand at a point of crisis, in fact, many crises,  just as we have been doing for more than 70 years without fully realizing it. Even me. And, just as it was in 1972 when Nixon facilitated the earth in averting  Sino-Soviet cooperation, Midstream Republicans must save us.
Our destruction is at hand from many sources. In this article we divulge the top ten most urgent, starting with some of the better-known.

Global Warming. I don’t have to explain this. Everyone is familiar with it because it has already taken us in its grip, melting the polar ice caps, drying up all our water, killing the polar bears, causing hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, cold waves, heat waves and international conferences.
Global Cooling. Long forgotten, the specter of global cooling, which the environmentalists warned us about in the ’70s, is being reconsidered with the shift in global temperatures (and the discovery of falsified data). Global cooling would expand the polar ice caps, freezing up all our water, killing the panda bears, causing hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, cold waves, heat waves and international conferences.
Climate Change is neither global warming nor global cooling, but a deadly vacillating back and forth between BOTH, drying up, then freezing all our water, killing the polar bears AND panda bears, causing hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, cold waves, heat waves and international conferences.
Global Whacking. Near Earth Objects (Big Asteroids) crash into Earth, effectively whacking it.
Black Holes. A star collapses, producing an immense gravitational pull along the way, drawing everything in its path—including light—toward its core, like a giant vacuum cleaner from which there’s no escape.  A lot like the IRS.
Mini Black Holes. From the  Large Hadron Collider ( LHC) in Geneva, Switzerland. Although Hawking’s radiation should dissolve these holes instantly, no one knows for certain that Hawking’s radiation works on the micro scale or if we have enough of it. And if it doesn’t, one mini black hole could start bouncing around the Earth, essentially dicing the planet into two groups, the hole-y and the un-hole-y.
Nanobots. Billions of tiny self-replicating robots suddenly go berserk and instead of doing the job for which they were built (like mopping up an oil spill), they start consuming all matter on Earth—while building more of themselves. Ick.
Gamma Rays. A high-energy beam of electromagnetic
radiation shot out of a supernova, or exploding star. Researchers say we must avoid a routine gamma-ray burst within 3,000 light years of the Earth. A full-time job.
Strangelets. Bits of “strange matter.” When strange matter encounters normal matter, it turns normal matter into strange matter. Evidence of this is everywhere. Normally, strange matter decays in microseconds and doesn’t cause much harm. But it’s theoretically possible for a chunk to stabilize. If that happens it would start turning all nearby matter into strange matter—and it wouldn’t stop. The “normal” Earth would eventually be replaced by the “strange” Earth. There is no telling how far this has gone.
Deadly pathogens. These have already been made into bio-weapons. Any of them, especially with a little  genetic tinkering to make strains more virulent, would have the potential to end life as we know it. Pretty soon we’ll be genetically engineering bugs that no one has ever seen and to which no one has any natural-born immunity for the single purpose of wiping out all life on earth.
Antimatter. When matter and antimatter bump into each other, the result is total annihilation. The evil LHC in Geneva can manufacture antimatter in small amounts. It lies in a tunnel 27 kilometres (17 mi) in circumference, as much as 175 metres (574 ft) beneath the Franco-Swiss border. This synchrotron is designed to collide opposing particle beams of either protons at an energy of 7 teraelectronvolts (1.12 micro-joules) per particle, or lead. It could be taken out with a preemptive nuclear strike.
Yellowstone Park’s Super-volcano. It can pump enough ash and sulfuric acid into the atmosphere to blot out the sun, greatly multiplying the difficulty of casual reading, outdoor sports and rendering every sundial on earth totally inoperable. More funding is needed for research to develop means of eliminating super volcanoes.
Losses of Biodiversity. Too many species die, upsetting the fragile balance of eco-power through lack of eco-regulation. Eeeeek!
Solar Flares. Jets of plasma shooting out of the sun will cause massive outages, radio blackouts, satellite malfunctions, telecommunication-system meltdowns, a banking and financial-systems collapse and air-traffic control screens turned to fuzz. In other words, the same stuff we went through on Y2K all over again.
Alien Invasion (don’t laugh). The logic is simple. Since life evolved here from the random interaction of mindless matter, it must have happened all over the Universe. The cosmos is therefore, teeming with unknown life spanning the spectrum from primitive and warlike Sigourney-Weaver-style Aliens with acid blood to highly sophisticated super-intelligent super cultures with super-weapons and light speed hyperdrives. It’s only logical. And we are not prepared. Earth’s defenses are much like the U.S. Defenses before 911.

Just as it took Nixon to normalize relations with China,  Esser to embrace SEIU, Bush to get a prescription drug benefit and Mitt Romney to achieve universal health care and gay marriage in Massachusetts,  it will take Midstream Republicans to do the heavy lifting to avert environmental disasters.
We must look to Republican Environmentalists! Luckily, here in Washington we have Slade and Rob McKenna leading a solid team including (prominently) Sam Reed, Dave Reichert and Reagan Dunn. And mark my words, Dino will be back, stylin’! We’re all one, after all.
We must pass McCain/Lieberman! We must empower Regional Sustainability! We must develop a Department of HomePlanet Security with new powers striking down civil liberties and privacy. Biological eco-screening throughout society should become common, in schools, toll booths, stop lights and traffic checkpoints.
Give us DNA scans!
Give us the Big Tent!
