Venezuela socialist nightmare: Dead buried in plastic wrap because family can’t afford a casket

Hollie McKay reports for FoxNews, Dec. 13, 2018, that as the crisis in Venezuela’s socialist dictatorship deepens with mass hunger, starvation and a lack of medical supplies, there is no comfort even for the dead.

Venezuelan opposition leader Julio Borges, who has been living in exile in the Colombian capital of Bogota for the past nine months, told Fox News: “What is happening is medieval. People are ‘renting’ caskets for a service, but giving them back. The same casket is being used over and over again because people cannot afford to buy one. And then they have to wrap the body in plastic bags for the burial. Others don’t have money for a land plot, so they are burying loved ones in their back garden.

Other Venezuelans concur. They say the use of “common graves,” along with backyard burials, is becoming standard.

According to Julett Pineda, a Caracas health journalist, funerals in Venezuela cost more than 132 times the average minimum wage earned per month of around six dollars per person – making a final farewell far out of reach for most who would need years of savings to cover costs. Pineda told FoxNews: “Funeral services are too expensive. Coffins are expensive, as well as paying for a place in the cemetery and everything that comes with it: the chapel for the service, the plate. People cannot have a decent funeral.”

Many resort to cremating the dead because cremation costs roughly a third of burial costs. Guillermo Aveledo, a political science professor at the University of Caracas, explained: “In poorer areas, plywood coffins are sometimes being used. Former middle classes can rent a proper coffin for the wake, but prefer cremation, which is cheaper.”

But even the process of cremation has become problematic because of the acute lack of natural gas to properly incinerate the bodies, despite the fact Venezuela has some of the largest energy reserves in the world. “In some very isolated places, people get used lots for burial, which creates sanitary problems,” Aveledo said.

The shortage of hearses is also an issue. There are fewer and fewer of them available, and the acute fuel shortage – wait times at some gas stations can be as long as 24 hours – makes it harder to keep them running. In some extreme cases, impoverished Venezuelans drag their dead for days in the sweltering sun to reach the Colombian border, where locals assist them with some kind of burial.

Alexander Lopez is a disabled Venezuelan who injured his right leg three years ago in a motorcycle accident. His wounded leg became infected a year later and had to be amputated because of the lack of affordable medicines and medical professionals. Lopez fled Venezuela six months ago to find work to support his son, 19, and daughter, 11, because he could no longer sit by as his family was forced to scour through trash for food. Lopez now sells keychains, incense, and trash bags for a few cents each in Cuenca, Ecaudor.

Two months ago, Lopez’s son was killed in a motorcycle accident. For weeks, the body languished at the morgue as family members were unable to afford the bus fare and boat to collect the remains. Lopez’s former wife and mother of their son, used her law enforcement connections to cobble together some money. But when she got to the morgue, the owners would not release the body – demanding the standard morgue fee plus a bribe, totaling $150, an amount that far surpasses an average month’s earning. “Everyone in Venezuela is so desperate for money, even the morgue will manipulate the people,” Lopez wept, holding up his son’s photograph.

After days, Lopez’ family finally put together enough money to pay the morgue, and a further $88 to pay a local gravedigger, but there were no funds for a service, no memorial plaque or tombstone. Lopez said softly: “Even with all that, “the dead in Venezuela are still worth more than the living. I am worth nothing to that government.”

Lack of medical attention and resources has fueled a spiking death rate in Venezuela. People are dying from the most common and treatable infections and diseases, like the common flu.

Violent crime is also on the rise. Last week, two ex-major league baseball players – free agent Luis Valbuena and former player Jose Castillo – were killed in a crash after their car collided with a rock. Authorities believe the rock may have been deliberately placed in the road, as part of a robbery scheme. A Venezuelan humanitarian worker explained: “People throw rocks in the hope of stopping the car so they can steal it. In this case, it ended horribly… Even if these men had survived, there are not adequate means in the hospital to save them.”

Then there is the looting of cemeteries. Most cemeteries are public municipal lots, but the dearth of public safety exposes the tombs to looting, and mourners and visitors being mugged.

Venezuela has descended into such chaos that no one knows how many people have died because the government doesn’t have the resources to keep track of the dead. So the people are trying to do that. In Caracas, a group of journalists visit the morgues at the end of each week to count the dead, trying to determine how many died from organized crime and from “other” causes like disease or malnutrition.

There’s no indication the situation will improve any time soon. Despite once-brimming oil wealth that had Venezuela as the richest country in Latin America, the Nicolás Maduro-led government – which  continues the socialist policies of his predecessor, Hugo Chavez – has pushed the nation’s economy into dire freefall, upended by massive hyperinflation, food and medicine shortages. More than three million Venezuelans have fled the country since their country began spiraling out of control three years ago.

But the government continues to deny Venezuela is in crisis, and instead blames its economic woes on domestic political opponents and the United States.

Here’s the FoxNews video:

Meanwhile, Hugo Chavez’s best bud and faux humanitarian Sean Penn is still no where to be seen in Venezuela.

Instead, he was spotted dining with disgraced PBS-CBS host Charlie Rose, whom Penn continues to defend, in the swanky Frenchette restaurant in Tribeca, NYC, where the menu is in French and a rib-eye steak (“Cote de Boeuf”) costs $134 per serving.

MSM creeps: former CNBC director spied on nanny with hidden bathroom camera; 27 more women accuse Charlie Rose

Fri, 04 May 2018 11:00:35 +0000

eowyn2

CBS News reports that on May 1, 2018, Daniel Switzen, a former director for the CNBC television network, entered a guilty plea to a charge he used a camera hidden in a bathroom tissue box to spy on his family’s nanny and her friends in his Pleasantville, N.Y. home.

Former CNBC director Daniel Switzen

On Nov. 13, 2017, the 19-year-old nanny discovered the camera. That evening, Switzen was arrested by Pleasantville village police, accused of videoing the nanny while she was “dressing or undressing”.

Switzen faces between one-and-a-half and four years in state prison for felony unlawful surveillance, and will be required to register as a sex offender. He will be sentenced on Aug. 21.

Meanwhile, 27 more women have come forward accusing PBS/CBS Good Morning’s Charlie Rose of sexual misconduct, which was known but ignored by network management.

Charlie Rose

Recall that last November, eight women who were either employees or aspired to work for Rose at PBS’s Charlie Rose showsaid Charlie Rose had made unwanted sexual advances toward them, including lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, and groping their breasts, buttocks or genital areas. (See “CBS & PBS fired Charles Rose after 8 women accused him of sexual misconduct, incl. walking around naked“)

Rose’s new accusers include (WaPo):

  1. Former research assistant Joana Matthias, now 63, says that in 1976, Rose exposed his penis and touched her breasts in the NBC News Washington bureau where they worked: “This other personality would come through, and the groping would happen”.
  2. Sophie Gayter, now 27, says when she worked at “60 Minutes” in 2013, Rose groped her buttocks as they walked down an office hallway to a recording studio: “I had been there long enough to know that it was just the way things went. People said what they wanted to you, people did what they wanted to you.”
  3. Annmarie Parr says that in 1986 when she was a 22-year-old news clerk and when Rose was filling in as an anchor on “CBS Morning News,” he made “lewd, little comments” about her appearance and asked “Annmarie, do you like sex? Do you enjoy it? How often do you like to have sex?”
  4. Beth Homan-Ross, now 61, says that in 1986 when Rose was a co-anchor on CBS in Washington and she worked directly with him as an assistant producer, he frequently made sexual remarks about her breasts and buttocks. When she arrived at his house to deliver materials or prepare him for work, he would sometimes open the door naked, holding a towel. More than once, Rose asked her to come into his bathroom while he was showering, which she declined, waiting outside.
  5. Corrina Collins was a 20-year-old intern on Rose’s PBS show in 2003. He brought her on a CBS trip to California for a “60 Minutes II” assignment. On the plane, Rose insisted she drink wine and began to “paw” her. Collins became drunk and threw up in the plane’s bathroom. Rose squeezed her breast during the car ride from the airport. He insisted that they work in his hotel room, where he told her, “I want you to ride me.” She quickly left his room. Collins says: “It felt predatory. I had already said no, but he was going to persist.”

All of the above five women had complained about Rose to management, who did nothing.

76-year-old Charlie Rose the creep actually is trying to make a comeback. Reportedly, he is slated to star in a show where he’ll interview other high-profile men like Matt Lauer and Louis C.K. who had also been toppled by sex scandals. That’s chutzpah! (Page Six)

Draining of the Liberal Media Swamp: Matt Lauer, Garrison Keillor and Time magazine

Something remarkable is going on — America is being fumigated.
Along with the outing of sexual creeps and perverts from the Hollywood miasma, the MSM swamp, populated largely by liberals and Democrats, is also being drained.
There were the eight journalists who either resigned or were fired for sexual misconduct. Among them are major figures in liberal journalism, like Leon Wieseltier, contributing editor of The Atlantic and former editor of The New Republic, and NBC News and MSNBC contributor Mark Halperin, said to have masturbated in front of a woman in his office, as well as placed his erect penis on the bodies of women without their consent.
Then came the firing of Charlie Rose, 75, of CBS Morning Show and the longtime PBS Charlie Rose show, after eight women accused him of sexual misconduct, including groping, lewd phone calls, and walking around naked.
The latest draining of the MSM swamp are Matt Lauer, Garrison Keilor and the sale of Time magazine.

(1) Matt Lauer

This morning, saying they were “heartbroken,” Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb of NBC’s “Today” morning show announced that their colleague and 20-year “Today” anchor, Matt Lauer, 59, had been fired “after a detailed complaint about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace,” rumored to have taken place in Russia.
In a memo to employees, NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack said that the complaint, which was made by a colleague of Lauer’s, prompted a serious review and represented a “clear violation of our company’s standards,” and that although it was the first complaint lodged against Lauer since he took over as anchor of the show in 1997, there is “reason to believe” it wasn’t an isolated incident.

(2) Garrison Keillor

The AP reports today, November 29, that Garrison Keillor, 75, said he’s been fired by Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) over allegations of improper behavior.
Keillor is the creator and former host of A Prairie Home Companion, featuring tales of his fictional utopian Minnesota hometown of Lake Wobegon “where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average”. (As with Charlie Rose, I’ve had a visceral revulsion toward Keillor since he first emerged in the public eye.)
MPR confirmed the firing and said it would “end its business relationship with Keillor’s media companies effective immediately,” including ending distribution and broadcast of Keillor’s daily syndicated program The Writer’s Almanac, and  rebroadcasts of The Best of A Prairie Home Companion. In addition, Prairie Home Companion, which is now hosted by Chris Thile, will get a new title. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)
The firing comes shortly after Keillor, an avowed Democrat, wrote a syndicated column ridiculing the idea that Minnesota Sen. Al Franken should resign over allegations of sexual harassment.

(3) Time Inc.

Three days ago, on Sunday night, November 26, in an all-cash transaction valued at nearly $3 billion, the Meredith Corporation agreed to purchase Time Inc., the publisher of Time, Sports Illustrated and People magazines.
Meredith Corporation, a hardy Midwestern company with a loyal print readership, is the publisher of Family Circle, Better Homes and Gardens and AllRecipes. Its purchase of Time Inc. was made possible, in part, by an infusion of $650 million from the private equity arm of conservative billionaire brothers, Charles and David Koch.
Meredith Corp. said that the private equity fund, Koch Equity Development, would not have a seat on Meredith’s board of directors and would “have no influence on Meredith’s editorial or managerial operations.” (New York Times)

Update (Nov. 30, 2017):

Variety has more and very damning details on the accusations against Matt Lauer:

As the co-host of NBC’s “Today,” Matt Lauer once gave a colleague a sex toy as a present. It included an explicit note about how he wanted to use it on her, which left her mortified.
On another day, he summoned a different female employee to his office, and then dropped his pants, showing her his penis. After the employee declined to do anything, visibly shaken, he reprimanded her for not engaging in a sexual act.
He would sometimes quiz female producers about who they’d slept with, offering to trade names. And he loved to engage in a crass quiz game with men and women in the office: “f—, marry, or kill,” in which he would identify the female co-hosts that he’d most like to sleep with.
These accounts of Lauer’s behavior at NBC are the result of a two-month investigation by Variety, with dozens of interviews with current and former staffers. Variety has talked to three women who identified themselves as victims of sexual harassment by Lauer, and their stories have been corroborated by friends or colleagues that they told at the time. They have asked for now to remain unnamed, fearing professional repercussions.

UPDATE (Nov. 30, 2017):

Matt Lauer reportedly had a button under his desk in his NBC office which enables him to lock the door.
A former NBC employee told The New York Times that in 2001, Lauer summoned her to his office “to discuss work”. At the time, the employee was in her 40s and both she and Lauer were married (not to each other).
She says Lauer used a button under his desk to lock the door and then told her to unbutton her blouse. Lauer then stepped out from behind his desk, pulled out a chair, bent her over and raped her until she fell unconscious. The woman woke up on the floor of his office with her pants halfway down her legs, prompting Lauer’s assistant to take her to seek medical attention.
She did not tell NBC about the alleged incident at the time because she thought she could have done more to stop Lauer’s actions. She left NBC around a year later.
The NBC investigation that led to Lauer’s spectacular downfall was sparked by an intern who accused him of sexual assault in early 2014 at the Sochi Olympics in Russia. On Monday, the intern informed the human resources and legal departments of NBC News. Lauer was fired 24 hours later because the messages “showed incontrovertible proof of inappropriate sexual behavior on his part”, Page Six reports. (Source: Daily Mail)

Neo-con Bill Kristol's mask comes off; admits he's socialist & liberal

There is a fumigation — a disinfection of America — going on.
Can you feel it?:

  • Every day, creeps like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Charlie Rose are being outed and banished from Hollywood and the MSM.
  • Human traffickers and pedophiles are being arrested at a number that dwarfs the years of Obama.
  • Enraged by the election of Donald John Trump to the presidency, the Left are apoplectic and are abandoning all pretenses. Many have stripped off their masks, revealing their true faces, like “comedienne” Kathy Griffin when she held a mock-up of President Trump’s decapitated head.

It’s like our opponents have taken the truth serum: they just can’t help outing themselves.
The latest to out himself is the neo, i.e., faux conservative Bill Kristol, founder and editor-at-large of The Weekly Standard — the never Trumper who:

Yesterday, Kristol finally stripped off his mask, admitting that he’s a socialist and a liberal. He tweeted:

Kristol’s fellow liberals certainly recognize one of their own and greeted his tweet with elation. Some examples:

Bongmaster: “Embrace it Bill. Embrace humanity.”
NYC118: “Come into the light!”
Michael Rowland: “I didn’t agree with you about basically anything until 2016. Now I follow your stuff constantly.”
The Man in Black: “Welcome to the world of all Democrats that have started following you on Twitter since Orange Caligula became the GOP nominee.”

But the choicest reactions to Kristol’s self-unmasking are from the Deplorables:

Pol0tix: “You are becoming the jackass we always suspected you really were!”
Tj Kansler: “You’ve lost your mind and your moral compass.”
American Real News: “Kristol is a prototypical RINO. They believe in nothing so they fall for everything.”
Mamie Love: “The entire right has rejected you, an inauthentic neocon, so you now have to play to the left to keep your taxpayer-funded country club lifestyle intact.”
Noni: “What’s happening is that Trump’s election is exposing all your Globalist freaks who were pretending to be Conservatives; this election has brought out the inner Loon of you & your NeverTrumper buddies.”
Tim Parton: “You’ve never been for the people, traitor.”

Sexgate: CBS & PBS fired Charlie Rose after 8 women accused him of sexual misconduct, incl. walking around naked

I knew it!
Years ago, when I first saw Charlie Rose on PBS, before he became CBS This Morning‘s anchor, I took an instant visceral dislike of him, not because of his political ideology (of which I knew little), but because I found his faux sincerity creepy.

Yesterday, The Washington Post reports that eight women told the newspaper that Charlie Rose had made unwanted sexual advances toward them, including lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, and groping their breasts, buttocks or genital areas.
The women, who ranged in age from 21 to 27 at the time of Rose’s lewd behaviors, were either employees or aspired to work for Rose at PBS’s Charlie Rose show. The incidents took place from the late 1990s to as recently as 2011. Rose is 75, which means he was 69 years old in 2011.
According to the Washington Post, “rumors about Rose’s behavior have circulated for years.
Jeremy Derard reports for Deadline (via MSN), Nov. 20, 2017:

There are striking commonalities in the accounts of the women, each of whom described their interactions with Rose in multiple interviews with The Post. For all of the women, reporters interviewed friends, colleagues or family members who said the women had confided in them about aspects of the incidents. Three of the eight spoke on the record.”

Below is Rose’s statement in response to the women’s accusations:

“In my 45 years in journalism, I have prided myself on being an advocate for the careers of the women with whom I have worked. Nevertheless, in the past few days, claims have been made about my behavior toward some former female colleagues.
It is essential that these women know I hear them and that I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior. I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.
I have learned a great deal as a result of these events, and I hope others will too. All of us, including me, are coming to a newer and deeper recognition of the pain caused by conduct in the past, and have come to a profound new respect for women and their lives.”

Update:

CBS News has fired Charlie Rose; PBS also parted ways with Rose shortly after the CBS decision.
Today, Nov. 21, CBS News executives sent staffers an email memo, which was obtained by Fox News. The memo says:

“A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately.
This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program.
Despite Charlie’s important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace — a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work. We need to be such a place….
CBS News has reported on extraordinary revelations at other media companies this year and last. Our credibility in that reporting requires credibility managing basic standards of behavior. That is why we have taken these actions….”
