Cell Phone Stuff

Stupid News

Most iPhone owners say they couldn’t do without the gadget, and quite a few would sooner give up sex, according to a new survey.

June 29, Electronics trade-in site Gazelle polled more than 1,000 customers who have traded in at least one iPhone.
It found that 65 percent said the iPhone was the device or platform they would not be able to live without, compared with just 1 percent opting for Facebook.
But the juicy stat is that nearly 15 percent of respondents said they’d rather give up sex than go for even a weekend without their iPhone. And nearly 4 percent of reported having used their iPhone during sex. Keep that up and you won’t have to choose between sex and the iPhone for long.   Read More

Serious News

Cell phones are ubiquitous.  Every poor African living in a mud hut carries a cell phone as do the “poorest of the poor” in India and third world countries.  People on many public assistance programs in the United States qualify for free cell phones through a government subsidy to a company called Assurance Wireless.
Men take note: at the 20 minute mark she describes workplace hazards and radiation damage to soft tissue i.e. your penis.  At the 40 minute mark she describes damage to sperm mitochondrial DNA.

Smart Meters – More Bad Stuff Confirmed

by Mary Beth Brangan and James Heddle
Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Opt-Out
Ironically, now that PG&E is offering to disable the wireless RF function (for a hefty price) in their smart meters, we find that there’s an another extremely critical problem with the meters.
Just when you thought you had mastered all the esoteric acronyms, and all the problems with ‘smart’ meters, here’s one more: Switching-Mode Power Supply or SMPS. This new element in the ‘smart’ meter controversy deserves immediate full official and public attention.
In our on-going investigation into why so-called ‘smart’ meters being installed by PG&E against rising public opposition are causing so many people to be sick, and so many problems with other electric and electronic equipment, we have been fortunate to obtain the advice of electrical engineers.
On examination of typical meters, including ABB, GE, and Landis Gyr, they report that, in addition to its RF transmitter, each wireless digital meter also has a component called the ‘switching-mode power supply’ (SMPS) – switching power supply for short. Its function is to ‘step down’ the 240v alternating current (AC) coming in from the utility pole power lines to the 2 to 10 volts of direct current (DC) required to run the meter’s digital electronics which record the electricity usage data.
The SMPS function emits sharp spikes of millisecond bursts constantly, 24/7. The SMPS on the OWS 514 NIC model, for instance, which is the smart meter model widely installed by PG&E throughout its territory, has been measured to emit spikes of up to 50,000 hz and higher. This constant pulsing of high frequencies, in addition to the RF function, is causing not only interference with other electric and electronic equipment in many homes with smart meters installed, but also is causing havoc with biological systems in its field of exposure. Water or Coke – You Choose!

Here are some fascinating facts about drinking water vs. Coca-Cola. Most are from an article Water or Coke,” posted by puja on Refreshing News, Dec. 3, 2011; with a few that I found on the net.

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even mild dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79%, and bladder cancer by 50%.

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.
9. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the “Hazardous Material” place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!
10. Although numerous court cases have been filed against The Coca-Cola Company since the 1920s, alleging that the acidity of the drink is dangerous, no evidence corroborating this claim has been found. Under normal conditions, scientific evidence indicates Coca-Cola’s acidity causes no immediate harm.
11. However, Coke has other health effects. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis. Studies have shown that regular soft drink users have not just a lower intake of calcium, but also magnesium, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, and vitamin A
12. Stimulants: Begun in 1886, Coca-Cola’s two key ingredients were cocaine and caffeine. The cocaine was derived from the coca leaf and the caffeine from kola nut, leading to the name Coca-Cola (the “K” in Kola was replaced with a “C” for marketing purposes). Although Coca-Cola now uses a cocaine-free coca leaf extract prepared at a Stepan Company plant in Maywood, New Jersey, it still contains caffeine — 34 mg of caffeine per 12 fluid ounces.
13. Aside from phosphoric acid and caffeine, the other ingredients in Coca-Cola are carbonated water, sugar, caramel color (E150d), and “natural flavorings.” The latter is a trade secret.
14. A 12-oz. can of regular (non-diet) Coke contains 140 calories, all from sugar.
15. Coke concentrate, or Coke syrup, was and is sold separately at pharmacies in small quantities, as an over-the-counter remedy for nausea or mildly upset stomach.
16. As in years past, Coca-Cola is the world’s most valuable brand in 2011.
So, the next time you’re thirsty, would you reach for a glass of water or a can of Coke?
I don’t think I’ll ever drink Coke again….

US Debt Ceiling Raised to 101% of GDP

Congratulations, America!
Like a cancer that’s metastasized, the U.S. debt ceiling has just been raised to 101% of our GDP (gross domestic product).
A Senate resolution by Republican Mitch McConnell to disapprove increasing the U.S. Treasury’s debt ceiling was voted down 45 to 52.
Under the debt-ceiling agreement reached between Obama and Congressional Republicans early last month, the Obama administration was authorized to immediately raise the debt ceiling by $400 billion.
Now, because of the failure of McConnell’s resolution, another $500 billion increase was authorized.
This effectively greenlights the increase of the US debt ceiling from the current $14.694 trillion to $15.194 trillion, or roughly 101% of America’s GDP.
Source: ZeroHedge, 9/8/11
According to a recent study by the Bank for International Settlements, national debt becomes a metastasized cancer, choking off economic growth, when it reaches 80% to 100% of GDP.
The United States of America is now officially a debt-ridden third world country.

TSA Scanners Ineffective Against Terrorists

I have a logical puzzle — a series of propositions — for you to solve:

  1. The government installs a machine and forcibly subjects citizens to the machine.
  2. The machine is highly invasive of privacy because it takes X-ray-like images of our bodies, exposing the outlines of breasts and genitalia.
  3. There is scientific evidence that the machine is harmful to our health: it blasts cancer-inducing radiation into our bodies; it destroys our DNA.
  4. Despite 2 and 3, the government insists the machine is necessary because it will prevent a terrible scourge, X.
  5. But we have evidence that X can easily fool the machine.
  6. So, what exactly is the government’s purpose for the machine?

The final solution

TSA X-Ray Machines Easily Fooled, Researchers Find
FoxNews.com – Dec 14, 2010
Any would-be terrorist can easily outsmart the ubiquitous backscatter scanners found in major airports around the world, two scientists say.
The Transportation Security Administration‘s X-ray backscatter scanners have been the center of a widespread controversy, following concerns from privacy advocates that they take nearly naked photos of people. The trade-off is improved security, of course. Yet Leon Kaufman and Joseph W. Carlson, two physics professors at the University of California, San Francisco offer a stark conclusion: They can be easily duped, according to a recent paper published in the Journal of Transportation Security.
“It is very likely that a large (15–20 cm in diameter), irregularly-shaped, cm-thick pancake with beveled edges, taped to the abdomen, would be invisible to this technology — ironically because of its large volume, since it is easily confused with normal anatomy,” the researchers said in the paper. Kaufman and Carlson conclude that some types of foreign objects can be reliable detected only if they are packed outside the sides of the body, and some well hidden items would be impossible to see even with the scanner.
“It is also easy to see that an object such as a wire or a box-cutter blade, taped to the side of the body, or even a small gun in the same location, will be invisible,” the paper notes.
Experts have already highlighted that such machines are unable to detect hidden plastic explosives…. Because of the inherent detection methods, raising the level of X-ray exposure and thus the picture clarity wouldn’t help. “Even if exposure were to be increased significantly, normal anatomy would make a dangerous amount of plastic explosive with tapered edges difficult if not impossible to detect.”
The TSA maintains that the machines remain an integral part of their security arsenal, telling FoxNews.com that it trusts the controversial machines. “Advanced imaging technology is a proven, highly-effective tool that safely detects both metallic and non-metallic items concealed on the body that could be used to threaten the security of airplanes,” a TSA spokesman told FoxNews.com.
The report will nevertheless leave many critics wondering if the machines are worth the hassle with many already opposed to their use because of privacy and safety concerns. The ACLU has dubbed the scan a “virtual strip search” as it gives clear view of the person’s genitalia. These privacy considerations came to the forefront of the conversation last month when online tech site Gizmodo leaked 100 TSA scans to the public.
The TSA stresses that backscatter scanners are merely one tool in the arsenal, however, and just one front in the war on terror. “TSA employs many layers of security that work collaboratively to form a system that gives us the best chance to detect and disrupt the evolving threats we face,” the spokesman said.
