NHS nightmare: Cancer patient who filled cups with blood & not diagnosed for 10 months dies

Ain’t socialized health care grand?

From Daily Mirror: A newly-wed who allegedly wasn’t diagnosed with bowel cancer for 10 months despite “filling cups with blood” when she went to the toilet, has died.

Gemma Epstein, who married two days before dying on December 20, was told by doctors to “take each day as it comes”.

She was fighting for her life and had to pay around £2,000 a month for drugs she could not get on the NHS. Her family had also set up a fundraising page to try and raise the cash for last-ditch treatment in Germany that they hoped could help her.

However, Gemma died just before Christmas as the cancer was so aggressive that no treatment could help her.
Gemma had started paying for Avastin in the hope it would shrink her tumours, as she had been told by the NHS she could not have the drug because they no longer use it.

The 37-year-old believed that had family doctors acted sooner she might have been not been facing such a bleak future.

On December 12, Gemma was told the cancer was too aggressive for Avastin to work on its own without chemotherapy.
Eight days later, her sister, Becky Epstein uploaded an emotional post to Facebook confirming her death. She said: “Gemma passed away this morning at 8am with her husband by her side. An unbelievably beautiful, courageous and inspirational lady who touched so many people throughout her life. We are so very proud of how bravely and fiercely she fought her illness, right until the very end, she is now at peace. RIP my beautiful big sister ”

Tributes poured in online from those who knew Gemma.

Speaking today, sister Becky, 34, said: “The doctor told her no more Avastin, no more chemo. Take each day as it comes. She broke down. She deteriorated every day and we didn’t know how long she had left. The day before she died, she said ‘I don’t think I will be here tomorrow’.”

Becky said that despite her sister appearing to know her fate, it was still a shock when she died. “Nothing can prepare you for that. It was such a shock. It is such a shame. We didn’t even have enough time to get used to her new name.”

Gemma had married her partner Ben Greenwood at Pendleside Hospice in Burnley, Lancashire two days before her death.
Gemma, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, first went to her doctor in the spring of 2015.

The 37-year-old had visited a number of GPs and walk-in centres over a ten month period before her diagnosis but could not get answers. It was not until April 2016, after repeated visits to GP practices in NHS Greater Manchester and NHS England North, that Gemma was finally referred to a consultant.

Speaking earlier this month Becky described what Gemma was going through. She said: “She was going to the GP in pain and she was filling cups full of blood. They kept telling her nothing was wrong and they couldn’t find anything. If the cancer was caught sooner it would have been operated on sooner.”

Gemma’s funeral will take place in Haslingden, Lancashire, where she lived, on Monday January 7.

NHS England has been approached for comment.

Make It Stop: Obese model Tess Holliday again promoting unhealthy body size

Model Tess Holliday is 5’5” and weighs 280 pounds. For someone here age, a normal weight range should be 111 to 150 pounds. She is classified as OBESE CLASS III.  There is NOTHING healthy about being so obese.

According to the CDC, the health risks associated with obesity include:

  • All-causes of death (mortality)
  • High blood pressure
  • High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
  • Sleep apnea and breathing problems
  • Some cancers (endometrial, breast, colon, kidney, gallbladder, and liver)
  • Low quality of life
  • Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders
  • Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning

Tess is into “body positivity” and “female empowerment” because she is fat. Somehow obesity is suppose to give women confidence.

And anyone who dares call out the health risks of her being so fat is instantly labeled a “body shamer.”

A couple days ago she posted the above picture on Instagram with the caption, @lizzobeeating told me to caption this photo “Damn… that look good” #effyourbeautystandards

Sorry but NO. That DOES NOT LOOK GOOD.

Promoting an unhealthy body size is dangerous (see the first bullet in the list below). Disguising a serious health condition as “female empowerment” and dismissing real health standards is not logical.

Feminism today has nothing to do with facts, such as those provided with the evidence of the consequences of obesity. It’s all about feeeeeelings, emotions and justification for your actions – and the lack of personal responsibility. That’s the liberal way.

Feminists get it wrong: Study finds that normalization of plus-size fuels obesity epidemic

chrissy metz

Chrissy Metz contributing to the “empowerment” of obesity.

Shocker, not.
I warned the feminists/SJWs that there is NOTHING healthy about obesity. See the following:

They didn’t listen to me.
From Inquisitr: A new study warns that the media “normalization” of plus-size body types may be fueling the obesity epidemic.
Research analysis of data gathered from 23,460 British people who are overweight or obese revealed that overweight individuals are increasingly underestimating their weight.
The study says people who think they’re thinner than they actually are 85 percent less likely to try to slim down compared to those who accurately estimate their true size.
The results, which were published in the medical journal Obesity, show that the number of overweight individuals who chronically underestimate their size has increased between 1997 and 2015: from 24.5 percent to 30.6 percent in women and 48.4 percent to 57.9 percent in men.
The study suggests that being bombarded with images of “plus-size” models may be leading people to assume that being overweight or obese is the new normal so they feel less incentive to lose weight.
The study was conducted by Dr. Raya Muttarak from the University of East Anglia and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria. Dr. Muttarak’s research also shows that minorities and the less-educated segments of the population are more likely to underestimate their weight.
The research sheds new light on alarming statistics indicating that 63 percent of adults in the U.K. are overweight or obese.
In the United States, an estimated 160 million Americans are either obese or overweight (the total U.S. population is about 326 million). Nearly 75 percent of American men and more than 60 percent of women are obese or overweight, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.
Dr. Muttarak said retailers who are trying to cash in on the skyrocketing plus-size population are partly responsible for the “normalization” of obesity. “Seeing the huge potential of the fuller-sized fashion market, retailers may have contributed to the normalisation of being overweight and obese,” Dr. Muttarak wrote. “While this type of body positive movement helps reduce stigmatization of larger-sized bodies, it can potentially undermine the recognition of being overweight and its health consequences.”
Over the years, the fashion industry — which has long exulted super-skinny models — has been blamed for fueling body dysmorphia and the eating disorders anorexia and bulimia. Now it seems the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction.
Dr. Raya Muttarak’s study does not condemn obesity or say overweight people shouldn’t be happy with themselves.
It’s more of a sobering wake-up call about the health consequences of excess weight, which increases the risks of diabetes, early mortality, heart disease, dementia, and cancer. “The continuing problem of people underestimating their weight reflects unsuccessful interventions of health professionals in tackling the overweight and obesity issue,” Muttarak wrote.

Feminism promotes obesity: Extremely overweight actress Chrissy Metz is "inspiring"

chrissy metz

This is “inspiring”

Chrissy Metz is an actress who is 5’4” and weighs 400 pounds according to bodymeasurement.org. The CDC has a body mass index (BMI) calculator that measures Chrissy’s BMI as 30.0 and above – she is obese. Her normal weight range should be 108 to 145 pounds.
People who are overweight or obese are at higher risk for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. According to Stanford Health Care, because of Chrissy’s obesity she is also subject to bone and joint disease, heart disease, sleep apnea, cancer, and metabolic syndrome (a clustering of medical conditions).
Yet in today’s society, “body shaming” is taboo. Thanks to feminism, we are told to be inclusive, body accepting, body positive, loving, and blah, blah, blah.
The “fat acceptance movement” and “fat feminism” do nothing to promote healthy women. To accept an obese body is to imply that one has no control over their behaviors. Our bodies are changeable and an obese person should be able to accept that truth. By resigning themselves to the impression that their bodies can’t be changed, they just perpetuate victimhood.
How about telling the truth for once? Chrissy is obese and there is nothing inspiring or empowering about that.
From Yahoo: The fashion industry is becoming more inclusive — at a snail’s pace, perhaps, but with palpable momentum behind the march of progress. It’s largely thanks not to the industry itself but to everyday people, whose beauty and bodies have long been overlooked and who have now stepped forward, demanding to be seen.
Chastity Garner and CeCe Olisa are two of those people, and they’ve stepped into view first as plus-size lifestyle influencers and bloggers and presently as founders of the popular annual event known as theCURVYcon. Now in its third year, the body-positive, curve-embracing event will take place in New York City on Sept. 8 and 9, bringing designers, fitness experiences, influencers, and speakers to town — including none other than Chrissy Metz, who stars on This Is Us, to deliver the keynote address (you heard it hear first, folks). Another first? TheCURVYcon will be live-streamed on Yahoo Style, bringing insightful conversation to millions of people who can’t make the IRL event.
Olisa and Garner are dedicated to promoting visibility of different body types within the plus-size world. That, in addition to Metz’s Emmy nomination, made the beloved actress the ideal woman to represent theCURVYcon this year. “A lot of times, in our space, the women who are celebrated are hourglass women — they’re a size 10 to 14, like the perfect version of a ‘plus-size’ woman,” Garner tells Yahoo Style. “I feel like [for] having size diversity and getting out of that hourglass shape, Chrissy Metz is a great representative for that. We love Ashley Graham, but she’s definitely the poster child of what a plus-size model ‘should’ look like. Someone like Chrissy Metz, her body type is a little bit different — we’re so happy to celebrate that.”
Olisa adds: “Representation is so important, and just seeing people who look like you anywhere is great. So when the hottest show on television has a very visibly plus-size girl who is cute, and falling in love, and doing her thing on the show, it’s inspiring.
While current conversations might make it easy to believe that such a space for plus-size women has always existed in the fashion community (during New York Fashion Week, no less), the reality is that it’s a recent phenomenon, spurred on by Garner and Olisa’s insistence that the industry make room.
“If inclusion isn’t happening by invitation, then we’re just going to move in ourselves,” Olisa tells Yahoo Style.

Woman in a coma with brain cancer gives birth to 24-week-old baby

cure for carriePhoto of Life Lynn from Cure for Carrie Facebook page.

Your antidote to those who say “yay” to abortion.
From Fox News: A 37-year-old woman who has been in a coma since July, gave birth to a baby girl via emergency cesarean section on Wednesday, at just 24 weeks gestation. The baby, named Life Lynn, is the youngest of Carrie Deklyen’s six children, and weighs 1 lbs., 4 ounces.
Dekylen, of Wyoming, Michigan, discovered she was pregnant in April, just two weeks after being diagnosed with glioblastoma. She underwent two surgeries to remove the tumor and, along with her husband, Nick, chose to forego a clinical trial in order to protect the baby.
“I asked her what she wanted to do. She said, ‘We are keeping it,’” Nick told ABC News on Aug. 15. “That was always my choice too, but I wanted her to decide because it was her life we were talking about.”
The family started the “Cure 4 Carrie” Facebook page and a GoFundMe page to keep supporters updated on Dekylen and Life. A September 2 post indicated that Dekylen, who has been on life support at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor since suffering a stroke five weeks ago, is completely unresponsive.
“I just spoke with Nick and he wanted me to update,” Sonya Nelson, Deklyen’s sister-in-law, posted on the Facebook page. “We have tried to share Carrie’s story without being negative, but the bottom line is we need to share the reality of the situation. Carrie is not doing well. For the past few days she has been completely unresponsive, she is not even responding to pain.”
Nelson said that Life was measuring in the 3 percentile for her gestational age at the time, and that the family was asking for prayers. On Thursday, Nelson said that doctors were pleased with Life’s status.
Previous posts had stated that Dekylen’s tumor was showing rapid growth, and doctors were forced to drain fluid from her brain several times. Doctors had hoped to delay delivery until 28 weeks gestation, but a decline in both Life and Dekylen’s health had forced them to act earlier. A post on July 30 said doctors had planned to turn off life support once the baby had been delivered.
In addition to Life, the couple’s children range in ages from 18 to 2, and Nick said that while the older ones understand the circumstances, the younger ones are relatively unaware.
“The older ones obviously understand everything so it is very hard on them,” he told ABC News. “They love their mother and know what they are losing. We talk about good times and laugh and then sometimes we just cry because we just so much. The younger two do not really understand what is happening.”
He said Nelson has been helping to watch the children, and that “we tell them that Mommy is really sick.”

A message from FOTM's Wild Bill Alaska

my angels2
Two weeks ago, I did a post asking readers of our Fellowship of the Minds to pray for a fellow reader and commenter, Wild Bill Alaska, who has terminal cancer.
Since then, many kind readers have offered alternate-medicine suggestions for combating cancer, both in comments to the post and in email.
Bill sends us all this message:

To all my family at Fellowship of the Minds,

I want to thank you for your prayers and well wishes. I will sorely miss you all, but the lord and I will be watching over you from the other side and waiting for your arrival there. Please know that I am still relatively pain free and what pain I do feel is bearable with the help of my Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. My mental state is the same as before in that I feel no apprehension nor anxiety regarding my approaching departure from this earthly plane. (ok, just a little). But overall my faith in the Lord and his promise to  dwell in the house of the lord forever (Psalm 23) is what makes this coming transition  a thing of beauty and wonder and less something to be feared.

Since I, most likely, will be elsewhere for the 2016 presidential elections I would like to take this  opportunity to share my thoughts on my choice for the next president of our great Republic.

Col. Allen West, former Congressman (R-Fl)

A well educated veteran, patriot, Christian man who truly loves the country he has well served with honor and a quiet dignity. Colonel (ret. US ARMY) Allen West is a man whose career I have followed since he entered politics. This man was always my first choice for president should he decide to run. Now that my wish for his candidacy is quite possibly a reality, I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer and will not survive until the 2016 elections. I have made my peace with my Lord Jesus and am prepared to happily go home to him and our father on my passing. My one regret is not being able to cast my vote for this man who I believe can heal our nation and return us to the times when we all stood together as a united people proud to be called Americans. Perhaps one of you reading this will take pity on me and borrow a page out of the liberal/democrat hand book in the 2016 elections and cast a vote for Colonel West in the stead of this proud, but dead conservative.

Liberty in tearsPlease continue to pray for Bill.
I believe in prayers.
I believe in answered prayers.
And I believe that prayers can move mountains . . . .

Please pray for FOTM’s pnordman

dove

Calling on FOTM’s powerful prayer warriors!

Reader and regular commenter pnordman (Patricia) needs our prayers.

In the 1990s, she was struck with cancer and underwent “major surgery” on her face. The surgeon removed the right side of her nose, and brought a flap down to make a new right side.

A few weeks ago, however, Patricia noticed a fast-growing “pimple” popping up on her forehead. Her doctor diagnosed it as cancer and did a minor surgery to excise the tumor.

Patricia is awaiting the results of that surgery — whether her surgeon successfully removed all of the cancerous tissue.

Please say a prayer for Patricia, our dear sister in Christ, that she is cancer free.

Thank you for your loving hearts, and may the Peace of Christ be with you,

14 reasons not to drink diet soda

diet-soda

From World of Technology, Feb. 5, 2014:

1.  Only one year after aspartame was approved by the FDA, its own task force learned that some of the original data showcasing aspartame’s safety had been falsified to hide results showing animals fed aspartame had developed seizures and brain tumors. The artificial sweetener was never recalled.

2.  Ironically considering its name and reputation as a “diet” drink, drinking diet soda is more likely to make a person fat.  It is linked to a 34% increase of metabolic syndrome, along with its telling symptoms of high cholesterol and abdominal obesity.  Just two cans of diet soda daily has been linked to a 500% increase in waist size.

3.  Aspartame has been linked to the formation of various types of cancer.  According to Randall Fitzgerald, author of The Hundred-Year Lie, some of the cancers linked to aspartame consumption include:  brain, liver, lung, kidney and lymphoreticular cancer.

4.  There is an increased risk (43%) of heart attack or stroke when a person drinks more than one diet soda daily.

5.  According to the authors of the book Hard to Swallow, when a diet drink containing aspartame is stored at 85 degrees Fahrenheit for a week or longer, “There is no aspartame left in the soft drinks, just the components it breaks down into, like formaldehyde, formic acid, and diketopiperazine, a chemical which can cause brain tumors. All of these substances are known to be toxic to humans.”

6.  A Harvard University study found that drinking diet soda daily doubles a person’s risk of kidney disease.

7.  By 1991, the National Institutes of Health had cataloged 167 adverse effects linked to aspartame use.  A year later, the US Air Force issued warnings to pilots not to fly after ingesting aspartame.  By 1994 the UD Department of Health and Human Services had linked aspartame to 88 toxicity symptoms.

8.  Diet soda is extremely acidic and has been linked to dental enamel erosion.

9.  According to researchers at the American Academy of Neurology, if you drink four or more cans of soda daily you’re 30% more likely to suffer from depression.

10.  New research links diet soda consumption with overeating.

11.  Research shows that aspartame in diet soda causes an imbalance in brain hormones, specifically dopamine and serotonin.  Dopamine is a brain chemical that helps us to feel good.  Impaired dopamine production is involved in brain disorders like Parkinson’s disease.  Serotonin is a “feel good” brain neurotransmitter that reduces pain and the likelihood of experiencing depression.  Low levels of serotonin have been linked with aggressive behavior.

12.  Cans used for soda are lined with plastic containing bisphenol-A (BPA).  BPA is a known hormone disruptor that in study after study has been linked to an increasing list of health problems and diseases.  It damages the reproductive system in women and causes low sperm count and prostate cancer in men.  It has been linked to early puberty, obesity, breast cancer, and other conditions.

13.  Diet soda as a mix for alcoholic beverages worsens hangovers.  According to research at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia, diet soda increases the rate at which alcohol enters the bloodstream and worsens hangovers.

14.  Mold inhibitors added to diet soda cause severe cell damage, according to research by Peter Piper, professor of molecular biology and biotechnology, at the University of Sheffield, UK.

Coca Cola

Note: Drinking non-diet “regular” soda isn’t any better (source):

  • A 12-oz can of Coca Cola has 140 calories, all from sugar.
  • A 20-oz bottle of coke has 240 calories, all from sugar.
  • A 34-oz (1 liter) bottle of coke has 400 calories, all from sugar.

UPDATE (April 12, 2014):

It appears many people are eschewing Diet Coke. Its sales have plummeted.

The WSJ reported that “for 13 years running, Americans have been drinking less Coke. Now Diet Coke sales are falling off a cliff. Globally, sales growth of soda is slowing amid concerns about sugar intake and obesity.” While sales of Coke’s flagship product, Coca-Cola, are down almost 10% since 2007, Diet Coke’s sales have tumbled at double that rate.

The trends are industrywide, but it is especially bad news for Coca-Cola Co. a company that derives almost 75% of its global sales volume from carbonated soft drinks. “Sugar water with bubbles is not the future of the world. There’s an existential issue,” said Tom Pirko, an industry consultant at Bevmark LLC. (Source)

Cell Phone Stuff

Stupid News

Most iPhone owners say they couldn’t do without the gadget, and quite a few would sooner give up sex, according to a new survey.

June 29, Electronics trade-in site Gazelle polled more than 1,000 customers who have traded in at least one iPhone.
It found that 65 percent said the iPhone was the device or platform they would not be able to live without, compared with just 1 percent opting for Facebook.
But the juicy stat is that nearly 15 percent of respondents said they’d rather give up sex than go for even a weekend without their iPhone. And nearly 4 percent of reported having used their iPhone during sex. Keep that up and you won’t have to choose between sex and the iPhone for long.   Read More

Cell phones are ubiquitous.  Every poor African living in a mud hut carries a cell phone as do the “poorest of the poor” in India and third world countries.  People on many public assistance programs in the United States qualify for free cell phones through a government subsidy to a company called Assurance Wireless.
