Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., may well go down in history as being the least vetted president in modern U.S. history. His birth eligibility to be President continues to be an issue, despite his release, with great fanfare, of an image (instead of the actual paper document) of his purported Hawaiian long-form birth certificate on April 27 last year.
If Obama’s birth eligibility to be President of the United States is a matter that concerns you, as it should, you should know what the current crop of GOP candidates’ positions are.
Last March, Bachmann said Obama’s constitutional eligibility is probably the least important issue in the United States right now. A month later, she was more emphatic. Interviewed on FoxNews, Bachmann stated that Obama has not proven his eligibility, but that all he has to do is to answer some questions and show his document and have someone “who is legally tasked” attest to the validity of the document”.
In a recent campaign stop in Storm Lake, Iowa, a woman asked Newt about Obama’s country of birth. Newt replied:
“All I can report is the state of Hawaii has certified that he was born there. We both were with a taxi driver one day who showed us the hospital. There is every reason to believe he is a citizen of the United States. The fact that he’s already a terrible president, we don’t have to go beyond that and try to find something beyond that. In all fairness, this is one of those issues where it’s a fact: he is the president of the United States. Therefore, at a factual level, citizenship is a moot issue. He is the president. He’s not going to lose the presidency over that. He will lose the presidency because all of us will vote him out, which is the American way of doing it.”
On April 20, 2011, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) said he thinks the matter of whether Obama is constitutionally eligible to be President is an “irrelevant” argument because it’s a “private matter.” Besides, “nobody’s going to put him out of office” anyway.
That is most curious because Paul, like all members of Congress, took this oath upon taking office:
“I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
Last October, Perry told an interviewer that he did not have “any idea” if the image of his birth certificate released by Obama earlier in March 2011, was authentic. Then Perry said: “It doesn’t matter. He’s the president of the United States. He’s elected. It’s a distractive issue.”
I can’t find anything online about Mitt’s stance on this issue. But 3 days ago, on December 30, 2011, his son Matt Romney said Obama should release his birth certificate and college grades (h/t BirtherReport.com):
But Matt Romney quickly apologized for his remarks on Twitter: “I repeated a dumb joke. My bad.” (Source: TPM)
Last September, at a Tea Party debate in Tampa, Florida, Santorum told WND, “My understanding is that issue was solved. If there’s evidence to the contrary [showing Obama is not eligible], they should bring it forth.”
The Constitution requires a president to be a “natural-born citizen,” which many legal analysts believe means being the child of two U.S. citizen parents at the time of birth. When that was pointed out to Santorum, he responded, “I don’t think that’s what the Constitution requires, and he (Obama) was born in the country, so it doesn’t matter.”
The Obama records that have not been released include: Passport records, Obama kindergarten records, Punahou School records, Occidental College records, Columbia University records, Columbia thesis, Harvard Law School records, Harvard Law Review articles, University of Chicago scholarly articles, Illinois State Bar Association records, Illinois State Senate records/schedules(said to be lost), Medical records, Obama/Dunham marriage license, Obama/Dunham divorce documents, Soetoro/Dunham marriage license, Adoption records and of course the actual (not an image or a copy) long-form Certificate of Live Birth.
