Socialist utopia of Berkeley: # of homeless rose 13% in 2 years; woman walking her dog raped in broad daylight

Already a bastion of the Left, in 2016 Berkeley, CA, a “sanctuary” city, tilted further to the left when residents voted as mayor 32-year-old Jesse Arreguín, who had no prior government or administrative experience and had never held a private-sector job.

Although Arreguin is a homeless advocate “passionately committed to social justice,” Berkeley’s homeless marked his election as mayor by smearing feces on and around city hall.

Under Arreguin’s far-left city government, Berkeley’s homeless population increased 13% in just two years. City Councilwoman Sophie Hahn actually celebrates the increase as good news. She wrote:

Oakland [is] up 47%. Countywide 43%. SF up 30%. Berkeley [is] only up 13%. That means we are growing at less than half the rate of SF and about ¼ the rate of Oakland. That’s not random. I have a lot of confidence in our strategies.

Along with the number of homeless, Berkeley’s crime rate and pedestrian and bicyclist deaths/injuries have soared. People sitting in cafés and walking in streets are regularly robbed of their laptop computers and cell phones, often in broad daylight. In 9 out of 10 cases where photos are posted, the robbers and muggers are young black men.

A recent incident is particularly galling.

As reported by Emilie Raguso for Berkeleyside, on the morning of Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at around 7:30 a.m., a woman walking her dog near the infamous  People’s Park about 3-4 blocks from the U.C. Berkeley campus in an area of student residential housing, was approached by a man armed with a gun.

The man, later identified as 36-year-old Demetrius Johnson, took the woman’s phone and forced her to go with him to a secluded location where he “sexually assaulted” her, according to Officer Byron White of the Berkeley Police Department.

White said officers responded quickly and arrested Johnson “as he was running away” on suspicion of forced oral copulation, kidnapping with intent to commit a sex crime and robbery. The unnamed woman was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation

Police say Johnson’s address is “unknown” — which means he’s homeless. He is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail, and is scheduled for arraignment today at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.

Reporter Emilie Raguso wrote in a comment: “Just wanted to clarify that this was a sexual assault — not rape.”

Such ignorance.

Forced oral copulation is rape. In 2012, the Department of Justice updated the legal definition of rape as:

The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.

A Berkeleyside reader, anposter, actually feels sorry for the rapist. Anposter wrote:

I do have empathy for the sexual assaulter. He is a victim of a society which increasingly views people like him not as a brother in our larger human family but as a pawn in our culture wars. I don’t know Mr Johnson or anything about him or his history as an individual. I can only comment on what I see as the social dimension of these sadly common stories. Rather than using the plights of both Mr Johnson and his victims as impetus to address the proximal causes effecting his personal development and antisocial values, he is either dismissed as a hopeless criminal deserving of complete removal from society, or provided excuses, encouraged to define his identity entirely along tribal lines, and utilized as a martyr in our growing war on human commonality.

With voters like anposter, you can be sure Berkeley will continue to vote radical leftists into government, whose priority is to impeach President Trump and ban the word “manholes”, and who care more about outlaws than the wellbeing of law-abiding taxpayers.

To paraphrase French philosopher/diplomat Count Joseph-Marie de Maistre (1763-1821): “Every people have the government they deserve”.

Berkeley city government calls for impeaching President Trump

This is what the city government of the People’s Republic of Berkeley does, instead of tending to actual governing.

Berkeleyside reports that on March 29, 2017, the Berkeley City Council became the third, and largest, Bay Area city to call for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. The other cities are Richmond and Alameda.

The resolution that was sponsored by Mayor Jesse Arreguín and co-sponsored by three Council members, called for the federal investigation into Trump, citing concerns about how the president has undermined freedom of the press, and had “conspicuous connections with Russian officials,” as some of the reasons the House of Representatives should launch an investigation into the possible impeachment of the president.

Berkeley officials say they believe the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution could be an appropriate basis for impeachment proceedings because it prevents companies owned by an elected official from “making deals with foreign governments.” Emoluments could include any financial benefit, ranging from monetary payments to the purchase of goods or services, or tax breaks.

The resolution was approved unanimously. Council will now send a copy of the resolution to Congresswoman Barbara Lee, who represents California’s 13th District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The mayor’s statement congratulates Berkeley as “an epicenter of resistance against the Trump administration.” Two weeks ago, Berkeley, a sanctuary city, divested from all companies that help build the president’s proposed border wall, reportedly the first city in the nation to do so. The mayor also said that Trump’s “attempts to threaten extortion on Sanctuary Cities and create a Muslim Ban defies American values.”

Here are some Berkeleyside reader comments:

Jeramiah Styers: “Sad Berkeley has a city council that 1 has no authority to begin impeachment proceedings, 2 Doesn’t know enough about government and how it works to understand they have no authority or how impeachment actually works. You will never get a 2/3 majority with a republican house and senate. Not to mention you have to establish he has actually done something illegal. Which you cannot, because he has not.”

Sherry: “The Constitution defines impeachable acts as: treason, bribery, or high crimes and misdemeanors. Depending on how each word is defined, the grounds are either very narrow or very broad. Berkeley’s action just strengthens the commitment of the Trumpet’s base. (“Berkeley? Of course, Berkeley!”)”

Megan: “What an embarrassment. How about instead of this waste of time the council instead passed a resolution that said “although we have deep disagreements, we remain ready willing and able to work with the president and the federal government to find common ground.” How about a statement like that, instead of the idiocy they passed?”

love_berkeley: “Yo Council. As I read about how you are spending your time supporting an Impeach Trump movement, I was reminded about how my car hit a 4″ deep pothole on the street today. Time to stop playing activists and focus on the nuts and bolts of fixing our city.”

How come the Berkeley City Council never called for the impeachment, or even criticized Barack Obama, despite his continuation of the U.S. war in Afghanistan, Gitmo, and allowing four Americans, including an ambassador, to be slaughtered in Benghazi?

Berkeley homeless greet newly-elected pro-homeless mayor by smearing feces on City Hall

On November 8, the already far-left city of Berkeley, CA, tilted further to the left when residents voted in an even farther-left mayor and city council.

In an 8-candidate, ranked-choice voting, City Council member Jesse Arreguín was voted mayor with 15,912 votes.

A Democrat Party activist who, according to his biography, “has been passionately committed to social justice from an early age,” 32-year-old Arreguín has never held a regular private-sector job, and is pro-rent control and an advocate for the “homeless”.

On December 1, 2016, Arreguín was sworn in as mayor.
The next day, December 2, at around 5:15 a.m., about 20 police officers, accompanied by Berkeley’s code enforcement manager Greg Daniel and Assistant City Manager Jim Heyns, raided a homeless encampment just north of City Hall and a block from a high school.

As reported by Tracey Taylor for Berkeleyside, the raid was prompted by the discovery of feces spread “over a period of 24 hours, at various places on or near City Hall.” The city also reported problematic behavior from campers including public masturbation and offensive chalk messages on the sidewalks.

City Manager Dee Willams-Ridley described in a statement a number of “problematic behaviors” that had occurred during the 72 hours before the police raid:

November 30: In the morning, feces was discovered spread across the back walkway and back gate of City Hall. Staff immediately responded and cleaned it. That evening, staff exiting City Hall found the front door, door handle and door glass smeared with feces. We immediately responded and cleaned it.
December 1: The front door, door handle, and door glass were once again smeared with feces. Residents and visitors conducting business with the City, employees and guests coming for the Council swearing-in ceremony were told to enter through the back door. The first floor bathroom inside the Human Resources Department was also smeared with feces.

December 2: The north entrance door of Berkeley’s historic Old City Hall and the heating furnace at the Veterans Building were covered in excrement.

Civilian staff – who have acted with great dignity and professionalism in cleaning up feces – have reported that they have been treated in a hostile manner by members of the encampment for cleaning up the excrement. In addition, civilian staff have seen members of the camp masturbate and engage in sexual behavior at the site. City unions have also expressed concern about working conditions.

In addition to feces, the city’s civilian staff also found paint and chalk swastikas and messages on the sidewalk advocating suicide and “Fuck the Police”. Altogether, the staff removed 12 cubic yards of garbage, food, end caps of needles, mildewed or soiled fabric, broken chairs, and other debris. There were no arrests and no citations.

Willams-Ridley said that prior to the raid, city staff and a city homeless outreach worker from the Mental Health Division had been visiting the camp for several weeks to offer resources.

This is not the first time the largely same group of homeless people has been asked to leave a camp on public property. There have been several similar raids over the past two months.

By lunchtime on Dec. 2 after the police raid, some of the campers had already set up on the sidewalk across from the former camp, on the corner of Center and Milvia streets.

Mike Lee, of the homeless advocacy group First They Came for the Homeless and former candidate for Berkeley mayor, said he was furious because newly elected mayor Jesse Arreguín had assured homeless leaders that he would stop such raids from happening and would be an advocate for the homeless.

Today, mayor Arreguín is bringing a number of proposals to the City Council which will include a recommendation to allow homeless camping in designated areas, the locations of which  have yet to be determined.
