Rectangular icebergs in Antarctica

Operation IceBridge is National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) longest-running aerial survey of polar ice to assess changes in the ice height of glaciers.

On October 10, 2018, NASA began a 5-week-long IceBridge deployment. The flight originated from Punta Arenas, Chile, and is scheduled to conclude on Nov. 18.

As recounted on NASA.gov, on Oct. 16, 2018, the IceBridge aerial survey flew over the northern Antarctic Peninsula. IceBridge senior support scientist Jeremy Harbeck spotted two sharp-angled rectangular icebergs floating among sea ice just off of the Larsen C ice shelf.

The rectangular icebergs appeared to be freshly carved from Larsen C, which in July 2017 released the massive A68 iceberg, a chunk of ice about the size of the state of Delaware.

Harbeck said:

“I thought it was pretty interesting; I often see icebergs with relatively straight edges, but I’ve not really seen one before with two corners at such right angles like this one had. I was actually more interested in capturing the A68 iceberg that we were about to fly over, but I thought this rectangular iceberg was visually interesting and fairly photogenic, so on a lark, I just took a couple photos.”

Here’s a closer-up image of the larger rectangular iceberg, showing the iceberg’s sharp angles and precision-cut edges.

How do natural icebergs get to be rectangular in shape, with sharp angles?

Ozone hole above Earth shrinks to record low

ozone_hole_NASA
Good news about planet Earth!
The evil ozone hole over Antarctica is shrinking to record low dimensions!
But did you hear or see it on the MSM?
Stephanie Pappas reports for LiveScience, Feb. 12, 2013, that new satellite observations show that the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica is shrinking.
Ozone is a molecule made of three oxygen atoms. It’s relatively highly concentrated in a particular layer of the stratosphere about 12 to 19 miles above Earth’s surface. This ozone layer prevents ultraviolet (UV) light from reaching Earth’s surface, which is a good thing because UV light causes sunburn and skin cancer.
Ever since the early 1980s, though, a hole in the ozone layer has developed over Antarctica during September to November, decreasing ozone concentration by as much as 70%. The cause is human-produced chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were once heavily used in aerosols and refrigeration.
Antarctica is particularly vulnerable to ozone-depleting substances, because high winds cause a vortex of cold air to circulate over the continent. In the resulting frigid temperatures, CFCs are especially effective at depleting ozone. The result is that people in the Southern Hemisphere are at increased risk of exposure from UV radiation.

ozone layer

By international agreement, CFCs have been phased out of use, which has resulted in tangible measurable effects. The latest satellite data indicate that in 2012, the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica was smaller than it has ever been in the last 10 years.
The new observations, announced by the European Space Agency (ESA) on Feb. 8, come from Europe’s Met Op weather satellite, which has an instrument specifically designed to sense ozone concentrations. The findings suggest that the phase-out of CFCs is working, the ESA reports.
CFCs persist in the atmosphere for a long time, so it may take until the middle of the century for ozone concentrations to rebound to 1960s levels, the ESA reports. However, the hole in the ozone over Antarctica should completely close in the next few decades.
Of course, none of this changes the Global Warming/Climate Change ideologues, because they are a cult masquerading as science. It’s a cult immune to reason and empirical evidence (“Global Cooling For Last 10 Years”; “UN admits the sun may cause global warming”), sustained by fraud (“Employees of Al Gore discover he’s a bullsh*t hypocrite”) and lies (“New Emails Show Global Warming Scientists to be Frauds”), and hell-bent on imposing their will via intimidation (“Professor compares global warming skepticism to racism”), propaganda, coercion and power (“Here’s proof that environmentalists really are Nazis”).
Like the POS in the White House.
In his State Of The Union address on February 12, Obama made it clear that action by the federal government on global-warming legislation will be a major priority in his second term, declaring that “for the sake of our children and our future, we must do more to combat climate change.”
It’s always about “the children.” Yeah, Obama cares so much about “the children” that he favors the killing of unborn children up to the third trimester and even when they survive a botched abortion.
The POS then threatened Congress. If Congress wouldn’t act soon to enact “climate change” legislation, then he will take action without them:
But if Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will (applause) I will direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy.” Blah, blah, blah.

What-Change-Looks-Like

Who needs Congress to make laws when there’s Emperor Obama? Who needs three branches of government? Who needs the Constitution?
Obama will rule all by himself with executive orders. Kings used to do that by issuing edicts.
As for all those braying hyenas in the media who had whined about Richard Nixon’s “Imperial Presidency,” there is only the sound of crickets….

How the iceberg got its stripes

By: Shannon Dybvig

Winter tends to be cold, dark, and monochromatic. But in the world’s polar regions winter can be surprisingly colorful, thanks to icebergs formed with blues, greens, blacks, and browns–usually in the form of stripes. These stripes were caused when layers of sediment, ice, or other materials were picked up or seeped into cracks as a glacier formed over the millennia. Be it a black layer of soot from an ancient volcanic event, or water that flash froze in place, each layer tells a story and marks a time in ancient history. Check out these stylish monoliths below.

Green stripes occur when algae-rich seawater freezes to the underside of an iceberg.

The word “iceberg” derives from the Dutch word “ijsberg,” which means “ice mountain.”

Baby penguin meets first human

Somewhere in Antarctica, a baby penguin stumbles across a man, Joel Oleson, sleeping on the ground. Baby had never seen a human being before.
First, Baby is confused by the man and stares at him.
Then Baby tries to jump over the man as if he’s a rock. But the man’s too big, and Baby just flops on top of the strange man, with its right wing over Joel’s face.
Next, Baby affectionately pecks Joel’s face, making a happy chirping sound. Baby even playfully snaps at Joel’s nose and hat.

I’d given anything to be Joel! 😀

Dianne Sawyer is a Boob!

Found this over at newsbusters. Really funny.

~Steve

So enthused about promoting the far-left protests, ABC anchor Diane Sawyer on Monday night‘s World News championed “the Occupy Wall Street movement” by ludicrously claiming that “as of tonight, it has spread to more than 250 American cities, more than a thousand countries — every continent but Antarctica.”
Protests against the wealthy in “thousands of countries,” including Cuba, China and every country in Africa? Per the U.S. State Department, however, there are only 195 nation states in the world, so Sawyer imagined five times as many protests as could possibly have occurred.
