New Zealand begins its gun “buyback collection”

I prefer to call this scheme “compensated confiscation.”

From MSN: New Zealand has started the first of more than 250 gun buyback collections for banned military-style semi-automatic weapons in the wake of the Christchurch mosque massacres.

Police have set up the first firearms collection event just a few kilometres away from where a lone gunman opened fire at two Christchurch mosques in March, killing 51 people.

The Australian man accused of the killings, Brenton Tarrant, is alleged to have used an arsenal of five weapons, including two military-style semi-automatic rifles, in the attacks on two Christchurch mosques. Mr Tarrant in June pleaded not guilty to terrorism charges, as well as 51 counts of murder and 40 of attempted murder.

New Zealand police said they had paid about $200,000 to dozens of gun owners handing in their weapons in the first hours of the buyback event.

In the wake of the worst massacre in modern New Zealand history, MPs voted 119-1 to outlaw military-style semi-automatics, which allow the rapid fire of high-calibre bullets.

The Government is offering money for every gun handed back by a licensed owner, with the total cost of the scheme estimated at NZ$218 million ($207 million).

Chris Cahill from the Police Association said he expects a positive response. “We needed these semi-automatic assault rifles out of the community, but it’s appropriate that people who have had to hand them in are compensated for it,” he said.

But Nicole McKee from the Council of Licensed Firearms Owners said the compensation package was not fair and reasonable. “It happened so quickly that there was no democratic process involved and there were no discussions involved with the community that had been affected,” she said.

There are concerns too that farming communities, which rely on firearms for hunting and pest control, will suffer because of the weapons ban.

Professor Kevin Clements from Otago University told ABC’s The World program that general public opinion was “completely in favour” of the measures, despite complaints from gun owners. “The reality is we’ve got twice as many weapons per capita as you have in Australia, and six times as many as exists in the United Kingdom,” he said.

So on a per-capita basis New Zealand is a fairly over-gunned society, and those guns kill people, in suicides and homicides and so forth, at the rate of about one a day.”

He said New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had responded in much the same way as John Howard after the Port Arthur mass shooting.

But he said some in the gun lobby were urging firearms holders not to hand over their weapons and to bury them instead, and that many were disappointed that ammunition would not be compensated.

Some 258 collection events will be held across New Zealand over the next three months, and police expect tens of thousands of guns to be surrendered.

Licensed firearms owners will have six months to surrender weapons that have now been deemed illegal under the scheme, with an amnesty ensuring they will not face prosecution during that period.

After the amnesty expires, possession of prohibited firearms is punishable by up to five years in jail.

Police Minister Stuart Nash said police knew of 14,300 registered military-style semi-automatic rifles and there were an estimated 1.2 million firearms in the community, with the vast majority still legal under the new rules.

Beginning July 1 in CA: Background checks required to purchase ammo

Only for law-abiding citizens, of course.

And if California demorat presidential candidate Eric Swalwell had his way, he’d ban the individual ownership of more than 200 rounds of any given caliber of ammunition. That fool has obviously never been to a gun range.

Detroit lawmaker pushes “bullet bill” where you have to purchase ammo through law enforcement and go through mental background check

It’s always about control.

From The Detroit News: A resolution introduced in Wayne County seeks to encourage state and federal legislators to regulate and limit ammunition sales.

Outgoing District 6 Commissioner Reggie “Reg” Davis submitted the resolution to the commission’s chair, Gary Woronchak, to encourage Michigan and U.S. leaders to adopt policies to end gun violence. If the commission does that, Davis said, he plans to seek passage of an ordinance to adopt the policies for which his resolution calls.

“In Detroit, it’s the wild, wild west,” Davis, a Democrat, told The Detroit News in a phone interview. “I want to stop turning on the TV every day seeing a younger version of myself at a gas station or a Coney Island, seeing these kids kill each other. We need some sort of control.

Davis spoke about his resolution before members of the media Tuesday morning at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, where his brother and uncle, slain from gun violence, are entombed.

Davis’ resolution would call for ammunition sales to require a background check, including a mental health evaluation. It also would encourage levying higher taxes on ammunition and limiting the number of bullets a person can buy.

Davis said the resolution also would seek the ability for people to purchase ammunition at a law enforcement agency, where they could get a background check done, as well. He said he is not seeking to limit its purchase at stores or gun shows.

Revenue made from bullet sales and taxes, Davis said, could go toward families of gun violence victims and educating people on gun safety and the Second Amendment.

“To the NRA, we’re not trying to destroy anything you stand for,” Davis said. “I support the Second Amendment. But I’m looking to build a better community for urban Americans, for Detroiters.”

The NRA did not respond for a comment. (Yes they did. See here.)

Davis also recently learned of a push in California to include serial numbers on bullets. He said he hopes to add an addendum to the resolution he is proposing that would call for a way to track bullets, though he expressed concern that using serial numbers for each bullet would be costly.

Davis said he would like to see the resolution passed at the meeting of the 15-member board on Oct. 4 or the one after. He is hopeful for the resolution but is doubtful an ordinance could survive since it would likely face legal challenges.

“We are all creatures of the state,” Davis said. “They can trump anything we do, but I don’t care. I want to fight.”

Earlier in his life, Davis said he had an “affinity” for guns, owning sniper rifles, double barrel sawed-off shotguns, Glocks, revolvers and more. That changed on Feb. 19, 2001, when his 19-year-old brother, Vito, died in a botched armed robbery.

Now, he said he no longer carries a weapon on him, though he added that “no one should try breaking into my house at 3 a.m.”

“You have one or two or three of those moments in your life that brings you closer to God, gives you a more crisp vision of life,” Davis said. “It definitely gave me a clearer vision of my life, and I’m going to fight until my dying day against this gun violence.”

Ammunition Is Getting Scarce
This morning I lucked out and was able to buy several cases of ammo. On the way home I stopped at the gas station where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde was filling up her car at the next pump.
She looked at the ammo in the back of my SUV and said in a very sexy voice, “I’m a big believer in barter, big boy”. “Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?”

I thought a few seconds and asked, “what kinda ammo ya got?”

A social worker from a big city in Massachusetts recently transferred to the mountains of Virginia and was on the first tour of her new territory when she came upon the tiniest cabin she had ever seen in her life. Intrigued, she went up and knocked on the door.
“Anybody home?” she asked.
“Yep,” came a kid’s voice through the door.
“Is your father there?” asked the social worker.
“Pa? Nope, he left afore Ma came in,” said the kid.
“Well, is your mother there?” persisted the social worker.
“Ma? Nope, she left just afore I got here,” said the kid.
“But,” protested the social worker, (thinking that surely she will need to intervene in this situation) “are you never together as a family?”
“Sure, but not here,” said the kid through the door. “This is the outhouse!”
Government workers are so very smart. Aren’t you overjoyed that they’ll soon be handling all our financial, educational and medical dilemmas?

Is Soros Buying Up Guns in the U.S.?

There’s an alarming e-mail circulating which claims:

For the last several years a company called  The Freedom Group has been buying up gun and ammunition manufacturers. Some of the companies are Bushmaster, Marlin, Remington,DPMS, Dakota Arms and H&R.

Some people worry that this Freedom Group is going to control most of the firearms companies in the United States. If you control the manufacturers you can decide to stop selling to civilians. What a perfect way to control guns.

Now if you do some digging you will see that The Freedom Group is owned by a company called Cerberus Capital Management. Guess who controls Cerberus???

GEORGE SOROS !!!!!!!!! One of the most evil men on this planet who wants to restrict or ban all civilian guns.

[Source: https://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/…arnes-bullets/]

That e-mail is not true.

The following is from the National Rifle Association website:

Internet Rumors About Cerberus, Freedom Group Are Patently False

Friday, October 14, 2011

Recently, an old rumor regarding Cerberus–the private equity firm that owns Freedom group, a holding company that in turn owns a number of firearms manufacturers, including Remington, Marlin, Bushmaster, and DPMS–was in some way tied to George Soros.

This rumor is completely false and baseless.

NRA has had contact with officials from Cerberus and Freedom Group for some time.  The owners and investors involved are strong supporters of the Second Amendment and are avid hunters and shooters.

In reality, at no time has George Soros ever been a part of the ownership group of Freedom Group or Cerberus, and as a privately traded corporation, there is no possibility that he will be in the future.

This unsubstantiated rumor has caused a great deal of unnecessary concern for gun owners. NRA-ILA urges our members to take great care before repeating baseless rumors found on the Internet.
