Sunday Devotional: You were purchased at a price

Why do we do the things we do to our bodies and to our minds?

  • Gluttony, bloating our bodies and straining our hearts.
  • Drugs and Alcohol, to lose our minds and our selves.
  • Tattoos and Piercings and Cosmetic Surgeries to inflict pain for no good reason.
  • Pornography, that corrupts our minds and distorts our view of men and women.
  • Sexual promiscuity, treating our own bodies and those of others as trash. (For an extreme example, see “Depraved nacho party”)

Did you not know that our bodies are not our own, for we have been purchased at a price?
Christ crucified

 1 Corinthians 6:12-18

All things are lawful for me,
but all things are not helpful….
Now the body is not for sexual immorality
but for the Lord,
and the Lord for the body.
And God both raised up the Lord
and will also raise us up by His power.

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?
Shall I then take the members of Christ
and make them members of a harlot?
Certainly not!
Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot
is one body with her?
For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”
But he who is joined to the Lord
is one spirit with Him.

Flee sexual immorality.
Every sin that a man does is outside the body,
but he who commits sexual immorality
sins against his own body.
Or do you not know that
your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit
who is in you,
whom you have from God,
and you are not your own?
For you were purchased at a price;
therefore glorify God
in your body and in your spirit,
which are God’s.

What a wonderful post Dr. Eowyn ! Satan’s most useful modus operandi, is to entice through the lust of the eyes and mortal flesh. Satan takes control by appealing to the flesh. When a person is totally in the faith, the devil will flee. Having complete faith in God, is to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit, which squelches all temptations. I believe this country has exceeded the evil that was in the days of Noah. History is repeating itself, at a more evil rate. Sometimes, it seems our sin-sick world can’t get any worse than It is, but the… Read more »

Thank you Dr. Eowyn for this beautiful post and the picture of your beautiful yellow lily. The above Scriptures were read at Mass today and I thought about our discussion that we cannot conceive of the evil that certain people engage in, as set forth in your important post, “Depraved Nacho Party.” And I bet that we don’t know the half of it.
May you enjoy a wonderful Sunday enjoying God’s real presence through the Holy Eucharist that you receive today. I feel much better today.

The more I hear Christianity explained, and the more I read passages like this, the more I realize that Christianity is no fairy tale or “old wives’ tale” to keep people in line. St. Paul explains things in a phenomenological manner; Viz., he explains things according to their nature. He who sins against the flesh does, indeed, sin against his own body. The same applies for people who dope it up. I’ve been lucky to be celibate for a number of years. But the smoking and drinking remain a problem. I see what the problem is: One law is at… Read more »
