Sunday Devotional: The virgin shall conceive and bear a son

Isaiah 7:10-14

The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying:
Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God;
let it be deep as the netherworld, or high as the sky!
But Ahaz answered,
“I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!”
Then Isaiah said:
Listen, O house of David!
Is it not enough for you to weary people,
must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign:
the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,
and shall name him Emmanuel.

The name “Emmanuel” means “God is with us”.

Luke 1:26-35

The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin bethrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great
and will be called Son of the Most High….”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.”

Isaiah’s prophecy that “the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,
and shall name him Emmanuel” is just one of many instances in the Old Testament where the coming of Jesus Christ, our Lord, had been foretold. See “The Old Testament foretold the Coming of Christ” for more.

There is also scientific evidence of the virgin birth — in the DNA of the man whose blood is on the Shroud of Turin and on the Sudarium or Oviedo Cloth — the cloth described in John 20:7 as being wrapped around Jesus’ head. See my post, “The Christmas Miracle: Scientific Evidence of the Virgin Birth”.

There was a time when science caused an erosion of faith. But as the human inventions of science and technology become increasingly advanced, more and more science and faith are converging as scientific discoveries confirm events described in the Bible, as well as fundamental beliefs of Christianity. See:

May the joy and peace and love of Jesus Christ our Lord be with you!

  4. Our Lord Himself said that there would be signs that would herald His Return. One of those signs—astronomical in nature—has just begun, and will continue until September 23, 2017: The planet (or “star”) Jupiter has entered the Constellation of Virgo, which is situated between stars at Virgo’s head and our own Moon near her feet. This was revealed in Revelation, and it presents to us a configuration that has NEVER OCCURRED in History before, and will NEVER OCCUR in History again.
It is a mere sign, not directly causative of anything, of course. But it is a sign nonetheless. Over the past 60 or more years, archaeologists and other researchers have found physical evidence of the truths of the Bible. But these discoveries alone DO NOT “connect the dots.” As usual, the atheists HOWL for us all not to look at these things, because their mental disorder must Reign Supreme, because their political views are correct, their neuroses are just, and their fears (which they insist aren’t there!) are our responsibility, due to our Belief. But we who do believe must make way for their INSANITY—which they insist isn’t there—because it’s “not historical,” or some other such B.S.
Well, Virginia, there IS a God, and your little friends are wrong! There IS a God, and here we are, stuck on a plane Adam & Eve kicked Him off of! We have ONE THING LEFT to go on, and that is the Actual History of what has happened. It is HISTORY, and not our imaginings or wishful thinking, that enables us to take the FIRST STEP toward God. And that First Historical Fact (in primacy but not, obviously, in time) is this: That Jesus of Nazareth Has, Indeed, Risen from The Dead. THIS IS FACT AND NOT WISHFUL THINKING: After all, All of History since that event has been a REACTION to that very event! But, of course, the skeptics and the doubters would rather side with, Oh, I don’t know, Aleister Crowley of L. Ron Hubbard or even Captain Kangaroo and live in their own delusions—while we are forced to pay their rent!!!
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone at FOTM.

  5. Dear Dr Eowyn . . . . . God Bless You for your continuing care and nurturance of the followers of FOTM. This particular spiritual message of the eternal hope in the birth of Our Savior, and the fact that a very special young woman was raised up to be His earthly mother is quite magnificent.
I echo Steven’s message to each of the FOTM family . . . . . Merry Christmas! May we abide in Great Blessings for the New Year that extend to us all individually, and to our nation as a whole.

    • Good day, Auntie! Some time ago I sent Eo one of my poems w/a religious subject, ‘a child went forth’ that is my interpretation of the events at His cruxification. She may chose to post it next Good Friday, but if you’d like it sooner, I can send you an email copy if you give Eo permission to share your address, as this devotional also shares its sentiments. And ‘Amen!’ to your equally fine statement above.

      • Yes, I would like to have you send a copy. By all means, Dr Eowyn, please share my email address with Joseph.
        Many Thanks,

  6. Alleluia, as we await the birth of the Divine Jesus, let’s rejoice for HE is peace, hope, and salvation, Amen

  7. TY, and Merry Christmas to all. It is time to count our many blessings. Dr. E., have you heard how the FOTM reader in despair is doing? I still pray for him, and hope this special time brings him much needed relief.
