Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
And I will ask the Father,
and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always,
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept,
because it neither sees nor knows him.
But you know him, because he remains with you,
and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
In a little while the world will no longer see me,
but you will see me, because I live and you will live.
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father
and you are in me and I in you.
Whoever has my commandments and observes them
is the one who loves me.
And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father,
and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”
Before the resurrected Christ left this mortal coil, knowing that we would feel bereft, He promised us that although “the world will not see me anymore…I will not leave you as orphans”.
That is how much Jesus loves us.
He promised we would never be alone — He would ask the Father to send “another Advocate” who will be with us “always”.
That Advocate who is sent to us is the Holy Spirit.
The dictionary defines “advocate” as one who publicly supports, recommends, defends, pleads and speaks in favor of, as a lawyer before a court.
Not only does the Holy Spirit bring us charisms or gifts — those of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord — the Third Person of the Triune Godhead is also our advocate who understands, defends and pleas for us, flawed creatures that we are.
So you are not and you are never alone. You have the Holy Spirit within you, always.
Ask the Spirit to comfort you in your sorrow, and to guide, instruct and enlighten you through the vicissitudes and brambles of life.
A Prayer to the Holy Spirit
You are God. I praise you because you are holy, and I thank you for dwelling in my heart. Thank you for working in my life. You guided me into salvation, renewed my dead spirit, and you opened my eyes to the Truth. Thank you.
Help me to see you more clearly – to recognize your movement in my life. Make me more sensitive to you so I can follow you more closely. Still, I know that I am selfish and rebellious. I need you to help me be obedient when I recognize your leading. I need you.
I ask you for your help and comfort today. You know my pain and anxieties very well. Thank you for praying over me. Help me to rest in your comfort today.
Help me to walk in you, the Spirit of God. Grow good fruit in my life. You are the one who produces these in me: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I cannot live out these things on my own; I need you.
May the peace and love of Jesus Christ our Lord be with you,
