Sunday Devotional: A time unsurpassed in distress

Mark 13:24-32

Jesus said to his disciples:
“In those days after that tribulation
the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light,
and the stars will be falling from the sky,
and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

“And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’
with great power and glory,
and then he will send out the angels
and gather his elect from the four winds,
from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.

“Learn a lesson from the fig tree.
When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves,
you know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see these things happening,
know that he is near, at the gates.
Amen, I say to you,
this generation will not pass away
until all these things have taken place.
Heaven and earth will pass away,
but my words will not pass away.

“But of that day or hour, no one knows,
neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”

Daniel 12:1-3

In those days, I Daniel,
heard this word of the Lord:
“At that time there shall arise
Michael, the great prince,
guardian of your people;
it shall be a time unsurpassed in distress
since nations began until that time.
At that time your people shall escape,
everyone who is found written in the book.

“Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake;
some shall live forever,
others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace.

“But the wise shall shine brightly
like the splendor of the firmament,
and those who lead the many to justice
shall be like the stars forever.”

The end days are real.

Both the Old and New Testaments warn about it.

The laws of science also support the notion that there will be an end to all things.

It’s called the second law of thermodynamics, which states that an isolated system such as the Universe, that is, one that does not exchange heat or work with its surroundings, spontaneously evolve towards an end state of maximum entropy — of chaos and disorder. The process is irreversible.

In truth, the end of the world comes to each of us when our mortal bodies die.

So, live each day as if it may be our last. Be right with God, so that we might join the ranks of the Good who “shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament”.

In the meantime, before we meet our end, we are to live each day to as “those who lead the many to justice” and we “shall be like the stars forever”.

May the peace and love of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,

  1. Another beautiful devotional, Dr. Eowyn…thank you!💙

  2. I saw this painting by Jon McNaughton a while back and thought it was beautiful.

“Awaiting the Command” – The soldiers await the command of Pilate, the angels await the command of Christ. You know the rest of the story.

  3. Thank you for informing and warning those who have never heard those messages and reminding those who have.

  4. And with Your Spirit. Yes, it is the end when our mortal bodies die, not so to our spirit that is infinite. But the human race as a whole will have to pay for all the evil done onto one another. Glory to God in the Highest.

  5. Dr Eowyn . . . Today’s Sunday Devotional is truly the very truth we needed to be made aware of for today. We look all around and see the horrors of what evil men have been willing to perpetrate on society . . . yet, these very scriptures reassure you and I that if we live righteously, and cling to the teachings of Our Lord and Master–we can, and will escape ever lasting damnation.

Thank you so much for lifting our spirits and reassuring us that the struggle of today is well worth it.

  6. As a society, we’ve been taught a lie where everything is reversed or inverted: The so-called “theory” of evolution teaches that everything began with chaos, means nothing, and is leading nowhere. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The Universe began with order, said Order coming from the Mind of God. To me, the idea—THE DOCTRINE—of Original Sin must be true: We see disorder and chaos all around us, in the moral order as well as the physical order, and we see a Law of Entropy at work in Nature and in our own bodies.
This disorder DID NOT COME from the Mind of God, Who always acts with a purpose and a goal beforehand. “My Word shall not come back to Me void,” He says. Indeed.

So it makes perfect sense to me that Adam & Eve’s Sin—and their self-righteousness in it—ignited the Law of Entropy and chaos and disorder. By some Mystery we cannot understand fully, God allowed—commanded (in the negative sense) that Adam & Eve pass on this stain of Original Sin onto every last one of their descendants, save the Blessed Virgin Mary.
God Has Acted throughout human history, His Hand guides it without interfering with our free (but limited) will, He sent His Son to redeem humanity, and He Will Guide human history to its proper end (as in goal) and end, as in culmination (as in temporal termination).

We are witnessing what I believe is the beginning of the End, and not “the end of the beginning” in that, qualitatively, evil and privation are assuming a certain quality we have not witnessed before. We have witnessed the infiltration and subversion of Holy Mother Church as prophesied by Our Blessed Mother at Quito, Lasallette and Fatima, and we have been witnessing the breakdown not only of law and order, but Civilization itself. And the demographic changes themselves are the harbinger of more entropy yet to come.

And it is Original Sin that has cut mankind off from God, and as if this were not enough, cut mankind off from being purblind to this condition and without the desire to know God. Just like any and every other Ponzi scheme, sin and evil has an endgame, and I believe we are about to enter that endgame. I do not expect to see the Second Coming of Jesus Christ (no one knows) but I do believe it very well could happen in THIS Century. And it will be quick, “in the twinkling of an eye.”
We and history will witness horrors unseen before not because God commands this conflagration as His Positive Will, but because evil, once done, will unleash its own consequences. “Behold, My Word will not come back to Me void.” So our only Hope is to repent and do God’s Will to the best of our ability.

  7. Thank you to all, for your encouraging and wise words. ❤️
