Suburban Moms During the Coronavirus Outbreak

This would be funny if it wasn’t so true…

I’ve been seeing lots of tweets about people publicly shaming others for “not following the rules” as they determine one should be doing during this pandemic.

My small town – which basically has been shut down since March 17 – is going into “Shelter in Place” mode tomorrow at noon while simultaneously opening up more businesses they deem “essential.”

They are also ordering a curfew from 10:00 pm until 5:00 am. From their directive: “Citizens out during this time for work will be required to carry and provide, if necessary, a letter documenting the essential service they provide on the official letterhead of their organization. (Letters should include: The employer on official letterhead or with official logo if applicable, the name of the employee who is deemed an essential worker, the time of day or night in which the worker is expected to travel for job duties, the type of essential service the employee provides, contact information for employer/company to verify given information, a signature from a superior. Employees with badges for given essential jobs, still need letters.)”

We have 565 positive cases of the Wuhan virus in Oklahoma. Our total population is 3.5 million.

One of the reasons the city mayor implemented “Shelter in Place” and a curfew? “The number of complaints and concerns received this weekend concerning crowding at certain locations.”

Trust me: I saw comments on the city’s Facebook page about people complaining about kids not “social distancing” at the hoops and front yards. How do you know if the kids that aren’t social distancing don’t all live in one house together?

How did we get here? I give you the following funny…

Welcome to America!

Funny but too real. This is really happening, a nightmare. Welcome to America? No, welcome to The Peoples Republic of Western China. That’s why this started in Wuhan (oops, better check my racism). A total lockdown was part of the plan and the Chicoms said sure, we’ll show you how it’s done, we’re good at it

Boy, isn’t that the truth! Our local Facebook group, which was recently set up to provide information on where to find (those hard to find) items, is being overrun by the self anointed virus police: “you have no business being out” or “even if you do wear gloves (or a mask) you’re probably not wearing them correctly and you’re just going to spread the virus anyway.” I often wonder to myself, what ever happened to minding your own business? You know, live and let live?

I ride my motorcycle across town (a whole 4 miles!!) every day to tend to my 77 year old Sister who is unable to walk to get to the bathroom, get to the kitchen to fix a meal or even warm something in the microwave-needless to say she can’t go shopping or go pay the bills. I don’t mind doing the tasks she needs me to do at all-it’s what family is for. What I DO mind is the fact that not a single neighbor has offered to lift a finger to help her. (They KNOW she’s not well-multiple Ambulance rides… Read more »

Harley, beard..that clinches it. You’re not “safe” 🙂 Now that you mention it, I wonder if the real gangs, Bloods, Crips, MS-13, are observing shelter in place. I seriously doubt it

That concerned neighbor is what I call a “Good German.” If this were Nazi Germany and I were a Jew,that woman would turn me in to the Gestapo in a heartbeat like a good German citizen

These are just nosey PITA neighbors: annoying but basically harmless.

What worries me is that same attitude from the police. Who gets to tell you what is essential in your particular situation? I fear too many cops are going to see this as a golden opportunity to exceed their monthly quotas and feed their egos.

I’ve read that the police in NY State have been arresting long-haul truck drivers for sleeping in their cabs (because rest stops were closed) on the road side and impounding their trucks – and then bragging about it on line.
