Student group calls University of New Mexico seal offensive

Apparently the seal wasn’t so offensive at one time – the insulted students did choose to attend this college. And the seal has been around since 1889. But this is 2016, the year of the perpetually offended.

From Fox News: The University of New Mexico’s official seal depicting a Spanish conquistador and a frontiersman is drawing accusations of racism from Native American students.
Native American students in the Kiva Club as well as members of advocacy group The Red Nation call the seal offensive, the Albuquerque Journal reported. The seal is stamped on all diplomas and is present at most school events.
Oceti Sakowin tribe member and UNM doctoral student Nick Estes designed his own version of the seal in protest, with the conquistador and frontiersman standing atop a pile of bones. He spoke at an organizing meeting for students against the current seal, saying it represents racism at the school. “To have this on my diploma is an insult of the highest order,” Estes said.
University President Bob Frank said he’d be open to discussing the students’ ideas. He earned degrees from the institution in the 1970s. “It’s a seal I have always known,” Frank said. “I certainly understand that people may have different points of view. If they want to talk about it, I am open to the conversation.”
The university’s diversity council and Jozi de Leon, its vice president for equity and inclusion, are taking steps to work with the concerned students.
De Leon attended a meeting where students talked about their problems with the seal. “This is a university,” de Leon said. “This is the place where we should be having this kind of dialogue. We should be open to listening to the concerns of the students.”
The students have started a petition opposing the seal, but no official complaint has been filed with the university.

Don’t students attend university to study & earn a degree any more?

Great phrase, “year of the perpetually offended.” Many more are among the simply p.o.’d.
Before the Europeans arrived, was there not war between the tribe’s, or, were they all sitting around a campfire shortening their lives with direct or second hand inhalations of the peace pipe?
Unfortunately, the history of all is that of warfare, and much, if not all, of the animal kingdom has that tendency as well.

Worse yet, marble…..they were not just “sitting around inhaling smoke” they were performing live sacrifice upon their captured foe tribes so much that, if you do the math, there was something like 8 people per minute sacrificed through certain periods of the Aztec “calendar.” THey were bent alive over a stone, their beating hearts torn out….their bodies thrown down the “temple” steps where, they were dismembered and canabalized. “Priests” got to choose the “best parts.” Likewise, the babes of captured tribal foes were raised for “meat” in cages. It is said that the “palms of their hands at age 3”… Read more »

When one thinks about the amounts of public monies that are given to these various schools . . . I feel like the one who is P.O’d. Since when do college students have so much extra time to invest in dithering about these invented wrongs??? Frankly, it is nonsensical to the extreme. Hopefully, prospective employers will do social media searches and weed out those who choose to be trouble makers . . . because if they are this way now, they will be the thorn in every bodies side in the work place.

Don’t kid yourself no one really offended this just an excuse to destroy the
heritage and history of the country all across the board!
Been going on along time.

Exactly, Richard, and my guess is that “Dr” Jozi de Leon, the campus yenta who looks like she’s from Nuevo León, is the instigator, and not the moderator.

Jeez, it’s just a conquistador and Gabby Hayes on the seal… no pile of bones on there. (Pretty basic, if you ask me.) Methinks the special snowflakes are willfully imagining things to be angry about…

I just can’t help but wonder; are all these offended people mad because they weren’t the first up the ladder, or because they just don’t know how to build their own ladder?.

Gee,..I don’t know,..Maybe the natives do have a point,..In that the seal depicts 2 Europeans, both of which came as conquerors, & there is nothing bearing any reference to the native population,..

Hope I’m not being too harsh but the school was not started by Native Americans – if they want to be depicted on a school seal, they should start their own school.

That may be true, but as far as I know, it wasn’t started by the Spanish Conquestadores either/

So after applying and attending the school, they are just now realizing what is on the seal. Sounds like someone that wants to keep the division going.
Maybe they should spend the same amount of time on their lessons, because they are certainly not picking up anything worthwhile going down this road.
Wasted energy.
