Son calls famous atheist Madalyn O'Hair "evil"

Madalyn Murray O’Hair (1919–1995), who was baptized a Presbyterian as a child, was an American atheist activist. She founded American Atheist Magazine and the organization American Atheists, and was the organization’s official president 1963-1986 and its de facto president 1986-1995.
O’Hair is best known for the Murray v. Curlett lawsuit, which led to a landmark 8-1 Supreme Court ruling ending official Bible-reading in American public schools in 1963. A year before, in 1982, prayer in schools other than Bible-readings had already been ended by the Court’s ruling in Engel v. Vitalein which the Court ruled that the sanctioning of a prayer by the school amounted to a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”

Justice Potter Stewart

Justice Potter Stewart was the lone dissenter from the 1963 Supreme Court ruling ending Bible-reading in public schools.
He pointed out the long history of government religious practice in the United States, including the fact that the Supreme Court opens its own sessions with the declaration, “God Save this Honorable Court” and that Congress opens its sessions with prayers, among many other examples. Stewart believed that such practice fit with the nation’s long history of permitting free exercise of religious practices, even in the public sphere, and that “It is…a fallacious oversimplification to regard the [religion clauses] as establishing a single constitutional standard of ‘separation of church and state’, which can be applied in every case to delineate the required boundaries between government and religion.”
In 1995 O’Hair was kidnapped, murdered and mutilated, along with her son Jon Garth Murray and granddaughter Robin Murray O’Hair, by three men — David Roland Waters, a convicted felon out on parole; and fellow career criminals Gary Karr and Danny Fry.

O’Hair had two sons, Jon Garth Murray and William J. Murray, both conceived out of wedlock and sired by different men. The older son William J. Murray became a Christian in 1980. Learning of this, O’Hair said, “One could call this a postnatal abortion on the part of a mother, I guess; I repudiate him entirely and completely for now and all times … he is beyond human forgiveness.”
In a statement first released in 1999 and re-published by Religious Freedom Coalition, William J. Murray, author of My Life Without God, calls his mother “evil.” Below are excerpts from Murray’s searingly honest account.
William J. Murray's book
My mother, brother and daughter were murdered by fellow atheists.
There is no getting around the evidence. For almost three years the national atheist organization my mother once led has claimed she left the country with a large amount of money. This was false and I will tell you in this letter why they told this lie over and over again.
First, I want to talk to you about spiritual matters that the general media does not understand.
My mother was not just Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the atheist leader. She was an evil person who led many to hell. That is hard for me to say about my own mother but it is true.
When I was a young boy of ten or eleven years old she would come home and brag about spending the day in X-rated movie theaters in downtown Baltimore. She was proud of the fact she was the only woman in the movie house watching this filth. My mother’s whole life circulated around such things. She even wrote articles for Larry Flynt’s pornographic magazine, Hustler. My mother lived in spiritual death as Paul writes: “But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.” I Timothy 5:6
My mother delighted in hiring unrepentant criminals to work in her atheist office. She particularly enjoyed hiring convicted murderers who had served their time but were unrepentant about what they had done. She got a sense of power out of having men in her employ who had taken human life. It was love of power over people that finally caused not only her death, but the deaths of my brother and my daughter.
My mother had complete power over my brother, Jon, and my daughter, Robin. Although I was able to break away from the evil of this family, an evil that had been there for generations, they could not. My mother did not permit either my brother or my daughter to speak to me. She had total control of them.
My brother would have been forty years old the month he was murdered. He lived with my mother. He had breakfast with my mother. He went to work with my mother. He had lunch with my mother. He had dinner with my mother. He went on vacation with my mother. He never married. He never really even had the opportunity to have a serious relationship with a woman because Of the control my mother possessed over him. My mother had the same control over my daughter. She was just thirty the year she was murdered. She also lived with my mother. My mother used food to control her and make her unattractive to men. By the time she was murdered she was so heavy she had to purchase two airline tickets because she could not fit in one seat.
For twenty years I could not talk to my brother. He would hang up the phone on me or tear up my letters and send them back. The same was true of my daughter. They both called me “TRAITOR” because I had accepted Christ and changed my life. By “traitor” they meant that I no longer followed the absolute direction of my mother as they did.
The house they lived in had statuettes of mating animals on virtually every piece of furniture. There was a full cabinet of booze and a refrigerator full of foods high in fat and sugar. They liked to live a life which my mother called “high off the hog”.
I must admit that toward the end I had lost hope for my mother’s conversion. The last ten years of her life she became even more profane and vulgar as the demons she courted got their final hold on her. The media stopped courting her because of the number of profane words she would use which they had to edit out. […]
My mother was an evil person … Not for removing prayer from America’s schools … No … She was just evil. She stole huge amounts of money. She misused the trust of people. She cheated children out of their parents’ inheritance. She cheated on her taxes and even stole from her own organizations. She once printed up phony stock certificates on her own printing press to try to take over another atheist publishing company. I could go on but I won’t. All the money my mother made in this manner stayed behind. It did not go with her. “For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” I Timothy 6:7
My mother simply believed, “Do what thou wilt shall be the only law.” […]
The deaths of my mother, brother and daughter should make all too clear the need for Christ to others that proclaim atheism. But those who would follow my mother continue to fight against God and His authority. “Fools make a mock at sin… ” Prov. 14:8
During Easter, what is left of my mother’s American Atheist organization held a convention in New Jersey. My ministry placed an advertisement in the newspaper there to tell them about Jesus. The new atheist leader, Ellen Johnson, ranted and raved against me, against Christ and against the Holy Spirit.

My mother simply believed, “Do what thou wilt shall be the only law.”
“Do what thou wilt” was coined by occultist satanist Aleister Crowley. It is also the motto of the Church of Satan.
Madalyn O’Hair was not an atheist. She was a satanist.

  1. This is one of the saddest things I have ever read. The only answer/help is prayer to a forgiving God. This post made me weep!

  2. My mother simply believed, “Do what thou wilt shall be the only law.”

This finally explains what was behind the actions this woman had taken. She was in fact a satanist!

  3. Dr Eowyn, thanks for yet another excellent posting. As Paul Harvey would say “now you know the rest of the story”
All that I knew was that she had one son who became a Christian (poetic justice), but I did not know any background on her or the fact she has been murdered (more poetic justice)
It still seems impossible that one loud ranting woman won out against a national majority and got prayer banned from public schools. After that decision I remember my parents fuming over the godless commies taking over the US. Seems Dad was right some 50 years ago

    • I don’t think she was alone; I think she had support…support with money and influence that exists today. Thank God, out of the waste from her life blossomed a warrior for Christ.

  4. William Murray’s testimony is testament to the reality of Creator God’s immeasurable grace – snatching him from damnation’s (future) torment, presently being sorely experienced by his mother, brother and daughter!

  6. Sounds a LOT like the Liberals’ philosophy, doesn’t it?

  7. Used to see her a lot on the old Phil Donahue show. I would always think to myself, If God doesn’t exist, why do you fight against him so hard? I guess she knows the truth now.

  8. Evil is a peculiar mystery. It is a privation, an act of rebellion and the like. But the fact remains, according to our nature: We can only choose evil for the sake of the good. When Nietzsche said, “Evil, be thou my good,” he wanted to get beyond this.
It is a funny thing: Back in the late ’80s, PBS had a special, “Voices and Visions,” portraying the lives of some various poets. From the life of Wallace Stevens, I learned that Darwin, Marx, Freud and Nietzsche—SATANISTS ALL—were the predominant intellectual founders of the 20th Century. Make no mistake: Many prominent people in government today ARE Satanists. From what I have studied and learned, the British Royal Family and the Rothschilds are Satanists. Barack Obama’s mother went to The Church on the Hill, which practiced witchcraft. When I taught high school English in New York City, several of my colleagues in the English Dept. were into witchcraft: One of them admitted it to me privately.
This is more common than you’d think.
Why do people follow or honor Satan? I guess they actually believe that he will give them a better deal. Make no mistake about it: They go through the lives of other people like tornadoes and destroy other people’s lives. They carry it to the point where demonic possession occurs.
I believe O’Hair was possessed. I also believe the Clintons and Obamas are possessed. Some people who are possessed know they are possessed, and they prefer that, because they’ve fallen for Satan’s cons and games.
And MAKE NO MISTAKE: America is now at the “Witching Hour”: We are corporately at the mercy of these people, and everything is about to break loose, in our lifetimes, under this President.

  9. “In a world without God, everything is permitted”….Another way to say it is ‘atheism is satanism and satanism is atheism’. If you’re not for Christ, you are against him. Period.

  10. I never paid her much attention, as she was so vulgar as to make herself very off-putting. Her murder was predestined by her insistence on associating w/low-lifes, no real surprise there. Too bad she also took two others w/her, victims of her bizarre behaviours.

  11. God bless this man…you could see the evil in her eyes…let Christ into your hearts and keep him there!

  12. This brave man was indeed the victim of a malignant narcissistic mother but he escaped to Christ. She spiritually canibalised her children but through the Grace of God she didn’t manage to consume him the way she did the other brother and this poor man’s daughter. My heart goes out to him for the loss of his child. As for atheists and atheism,I have a theory; I theorise that every single one of us actually KNOWS,on either a conscious,sub-conscious or unconscious level, that God exists and He is good. Those who know it on a conscious level are the Faithful, the sincere believers: the agnostics or those born into religions without the fullness of truth, know who God is on a sub-conscious level and the atheists, especially the militant, malignant ones, know God is real and who He is on an unconscious level, but because they either resent Him in varying degrees or even outright hate Him because they want their own way in everything, they deny His existence to themselves. The really militant ones like this disgusting excuse for a woman, hate Him so much and hate the rest of us, they don’t want anyone to have faith in or love God! It’s only my theory though, I would welcome anyone else’s thoughts and can anyone tell me Church doctrine on this? I would be very grateful! p.s I think satanists must be in a separate category of their own- evil always has to confuse and befudle, doesn’t it?

  13. Might be worth a mention that the self-righteous William J. Murray abandoned his child Robin – leaving her to be adopted by her grandmother, Madalyn. Wouldn’t fit your partisan slant though, would it. That said, both of them – William and his mother – sound like pretty mean hearted people based on their public pronouncements about each other.

    • “the self-righteous William J. Murray abandoned his child Robin – leaving her to be adopted by her grandmother, Madalyn.”
Give a credible source for that assertion. I searched for 10 minutes on the net, but found nothing to substantiate your claim. What Murray said about his daughter:
“My mother had complete power over my brother, Jon, and my daughter, Robin. Although I was able to break away from the evil of this family, an evil that had been there for generations, they could not. My mother did not permit either my brother or my daughter to speak to me. 14. Dr. Eowyn, I appreciate you allowing my post and I appreciate your reasonable request for a citation. I’m having a hard time finding the sources that I originally had from a couple of years ago… here is one secondary source that will hopefully temporarily fill the gap… from someone (a believer) relating their reading of William J. Murray Jr.’s book, “My Life Without God”. I will look deeper over the next few days as I get time and try and find another source – a more standard journalistic or biographical source. In the meantime, here’s the relevant passage from the review:
” He doesn’t white wash his own self absorption or how he used people for his own gratification. This was primarily through getting women pregnant. His first wife, he married for this reason, at the age of nineteen. The marriage didn’t last and he eventually handed the raising of his daughter, Robin, to his mother. He knew it was the wrong thing to do, but didn’t want to be saddled with raising the toddler himself.
” Years later, when Robin was still a young girl, his brother, Garth, who was twelve at this time, pleaded with Bill to take them away from his mother. Bill knew the situation was bad with heavy fighting, alcoholism and abuse rampant in his mother’s home but his own interests were more important to him.
” Later, when his daughter was a teenager he tried to reestablish a relationship with her but it was too late. She wanted nothing to do with him. He writes all this with remorse because both Robin and Garth eventually became partners with Madeline in her American Atheists Association.”

I actually come away from this more sympathetic to everyone in the Murray family… people generally do the best they can based on where they are.
    Regards.

    • Thank you, Roger. Your more detailed account makes clear that Bill Murray, as he himself testifies, underwent a conversion that transformed him. Before that, he was a terrible husband and father, about which Murray the Christian regrets and repents. We are all sinners, and Murray is no different.

  15. So sad.

  16. Fair enough… though: 1) even as a Christian he has said horrible things about his mother – even though he also lived in that mindset himself (I am not particularly relieved by him hating his former self either), 2) he can regret/repent without being a Christian. I don’t say this to be negative about Christians, but being a Christian is not the sole/exclusive secret to being a nice person (see number 1… and the fact that there are plenty of very nice non-Christians as well). We are all sinners/are imperfect… and one needn’t be a Christian necessarily to recognize it and do positive loving things about that very human problem. I am an atheist (not a satanist – an absurdity stated by several commenters above) and I find Ms. Murray-O’Hair to be, to put it kindly, very off-putting and troubled. I am, however, hurt/bothered when atheism is straight-out equated with evil… when we see our fair share of atheists that are kind and wonderful (I have many in my life – and there are famous ones) – and we see our fair share of believers including Christians who aren’t. If you look at prison populations, for example – each religious belief is pretty well represented. Christianity, done right, is a fine thing… but, again – as you say – we are all sinners. We must all strive to be better and to love others.
Thank you for a pleasant conversation.
    Regards.

  17. Wow, Roger’s an Atheist. What a surprise!
