UPDATE (July 24 morning):
The UK Sunday People reports that Winehouse died from ingesting a massive lethal drug binge.  She was seen buying narcotics, “believed to include cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and the horse tranquilizer ketamine, from a dealer shortly after 10.30pm on Friday”.

Another life lost to a self-destructive haze of drugs, booze, anorexia, and immorality. British singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home today. She was 27 years old.
Below are excerpts from an AP news report, July 23, 2011. Don’t you find it interesting that the media always refer to addicts as people who battle inner “demons”?

Winehouse shot to fame in 2006 with the album “Back to Black,” whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse — with her black beehive hairdo and old-fashioned sailor tattoos — one of music’s most recognizable stars. But her personal life, with its drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders and destructive relationships, soon took over her career.

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene.

[…] Last month, Winehouse canceled her European comeback tour after she swayed and slurred her way through barely recognizable songs in her first show in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Booed and jeered off stage, she flew home and her management said she would take time off to recover.

[…] But in the end, the music was overshadowed by fame, and by Winehouse’s demons. Tabloids lapped up the erratic stage appearances, drunken fights, stints in hospital and rehab clinics. Performances became shambling, stumbling train wrecks, watched around the world on the Internet.

[…] she admitted she is “a terrible drunk.” She acknowledged struggling with eating disorders and told a newspaper that she had been diagnosed as manic depressive but refused to take medication. Soon accounts of her erratic behavior, canceled concerts and drink- and drug-fueled nights began to multiply.

Photographs caught her unsteady on her feet or vacant-eyed, and she appeared unhealthily thin, with scabs on her face and marks on her arms.

[…] Winehouse’s managers went to increasingly desperate lengths to keep the wayward star on the straight and narrow. Before the June concert in Belgrade, her hotel was stripped of booze. It did no good, and the concert was painful to watch.

[…] She also had run-ins with the law. In April 2008, Winehouse was cautioned by police for assault after she slapped a man during a raucous night out. The same year she was investigated by police, although not charged, after a tabloid newspaper published a video that appeared to show her smoking crack cocaine.

In 2010, Winehouse pleaded guilty to assaulting a theater manager who asked her to leave a family Christmas show because she’d had too much to drink. She was given a fine and a warning to stay out of trouble by a judge who praised her for trying to clean up her act.

In May 2007 in Miami, she married music industry hanger-on Blake Fielder-Civil, but the honeymoon was brief. That November, Fielder-Civil was arrested for an attack on a pub manager the year before. […] Winehouse stood by “my Blake” throughout his trial, often blowing kisses at him from the court’s public gallery and wearing a heart-shaped pin labeled “Blake” in her hair at concerts. But British newspapers reported extramarital affairs while Fielder-Civil was behind bars.

They divorced in 2009.

Winehouse’s health often appeared fragile. In June 2008 and again in April 2010, she was taken to hospital and treated for injuries after fainting and falling at home. Her father said she had developed the lung disease emphysema from smoking cigarettes and crack [….]

  1. I had never even heard of her. I had to pull her up on You Tube music to see how she sounded. I was not impressed. But I am sorry her life ended so soon regardless of how it happened. I hate to see anyone die young. May she rest in peace.

  2. Sad to say,I was not surprised when I heard this news.

  3. Yeah Steve we all kind of “Saw it coming” I was never a fan but I hope the afterlife is more kind to her then her past one.

  4. Our lives are short enough already, without just throwing it away…. 🙁

    • The biggest problem Eowyn is how the media pushes this, instead of trying to help her, they assisted in her self destruction. The media loves to watch a celebrity spiral into oblivion then we have to sit and watch as the media acted like they ever cared then get huge ratings for doing celebrity death TV “specials”. That is why the media never liked the thimble full of celebrities that play it straight there is no “fun” in it, no drama, drugs, arrests, sex tapes. So instead of encouraging that attitude those celebs are attacked as being fake, or have a dirty secret to hide which must be exposed for the greater good of mankind.
Amy’s death is a tragedy and it won’t be the last…

      • If it bleeds, it leads. Bad news is good for ratings. Good celebrities are boring when there’s Charlie Sheen and his “tiger blood” to put on the air.

        • Interesting how folk into advocating an aethestic secular worldview (liberal folk in media) sudden start citing “demons” when lack of personal responsibility, character and/or proper upbringing raises its ugly head, though.

  5. To be honest, I’m surprised it took this long.
I have seen this type of thing happen to a couple of people I was close to at a similar age.
It’s always sad to see someone so young self-destruct.

  6. Such a waste of a young life. So very sad.

  7. She should’ve gone to rehab.

  8. No Sage no one here will be upset, what you said is the truth plain and simple. We just hoped in her final hour she reached out.

  9. She is not the first and sadly will not be the last, she is preceded by Janice Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and John Belushi, to name a few. All victims of their own celebrity and self indulgence with drugs and alcohol. All we can do is pray that she repented sometime within her final days or hours.
When my wife told me about her this afternoon, I said “she committed suicide years ago, it just took to now for her to die”. It’s truly a shame

  10. Agree w/ heavychevy… it’s the truth.

  11. Sage,
People who deny the truth insist on throwing stones at the messenger!

  12. Life is like a cup of tea – it’s how you make it. Another waste of a young life to the usual suspects. When will they ever learn drugs are the devil’s blood. I prayed for her at Mass this morning. That’s about all we can do. let’s hope others on the slippery slope learn a lesson from this. God bless all.

  14. the deadly speedball mixing heroin and cocaine together and shooting it up or smoking it. that is the way john belushi died and the singer from “alice in chains” lane staley also speedballed their way into the after life.
