Saving Valentina

A humpback whale was dying from being severely entangled in fishing gear. Its tail was weighed down some 15 feet in the water, its dorsal fins pinned to the side of its body, the nylon gill net went all the way up its back.

Michael Fishbach led the effort to free the whale.

After the whale was freed, she stayed near the humans and spent an hour leaping with joy and gratitude.

We are to be stewards of God’s creation:

“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth…. And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” – Genesis 1:28, 2:15

Thank you, Eowyn and Sol. There’s nothing like a whale dance!

  3. A beautiful and uplifting story for this Sunday morning. It reaffirms my belief in the basic goodness of man. Bless those people who saved the life of one of God’s creatures.

    • There’s goodness in some human beings, but not others. Afterall, the whale almost died from the entangled fishing gear left by some not-so-good humans!
