San Francisco May Ban Circumcision

Self-described “civil rights advocates” say that a ballot proposition to ban circumcision is on track for gathering signatures, meaning that San Franciscans may vote on the measure this November. The proposed law is being spearheaded by local resident Lloyd Schofield, according to the San Francisco Examiner. It is part of a national push to end the procedure, which some say is steeped in tradition but poses risks and has little medical benefit. The American Academy of Pediatrics  recommends that the decision to circumcise is one best made by parents in consultation with their pediatrician, taking into account what is in the best interests of the child, including medical, religious, cultural, and ethnic traditions.

Getting on the ballot is the easy part — only about 7,000 signatures are required. Once it’s there, advocates will have to convince voters that snipping off body parts is a bad idea.
Several Jewish organizations have weighed in against the ban as well, pointing out that circumcision rituals play an important historical role for many Jews. Schofeld counters that under his proposed law, adults would be free to opt-in to circumcision, but infants would not be allowed to have the procedure until they reach 18. ‘Would you like to help protect the children from forced circumcision? This is a human-rights issue,’” Schofield said.
If it passes, those caught cutting foreskins would face a fine of $1,000 and a year in prison. Only people over the age of 18 would be allowed to have their foreskins removed.
Of course, circumcision in the name of human-rights is fine for these liberals. Yet when it comes to partial-birth abortion, it’s “judicial independence” and “allowing politics to hijack medical care”. The City of San Francisco stood along Planned Parenthood in a case that went all the way to the US Supreme Court. Back in 2007, the US Supreme Court ruled to uphold the ban on partial birth abortion. San Francisco is the only municipality in the nation ever to challenge an abortion restriction (at that time).
When are these liberals going to get their priorities straight? San Francisco is facing a 2011 budget deficit of anywhere from $438M to $750M, depending upon the multiple sources on the web. Start governing and leave the decision of circumcision to that of the parents and their doctor.

  1. Since when is San Francisco in the business of DICTATING medical decisions? i would ike to remind this bozo Lloyd that sex change surgery is a great risk and is also of NO medical benefit…………….YET SAN FRANCISCO PAYS FOR SEX CHANGE SURGERY FOR IT’S EMPLOYEES! Frankly I think this is an anti Jew thing of his. I am disgusted that yet again, a city and some idiot’s personal belief can bring about a campaign for such laws.
San Francisco has ZERO right to interfere in this practice.
YET, these same people don’t see it as a violation of human rights, when a baby in the womb is murdered via abortion!!!! How much more twisted can these brainless turds be?

    • No circumcision, but abortion (even for minors without telling their parents) is cool. Obviously, they don’t respect Jews’ religious freedom much either. Those wacky left/libtards… forcing other people to do things they think-up for their own good.

  2. p.s. I am for the termination of the rights of people like Shofeld to reproduce and spread their damaged gene pool

  3. wow…. these people have too much free time

  4. Does that include female circumcision, too, or will that be made mandatory for building tolerance versus Islamophobia?

  5. San Francisco does not have the authority to pass such a law.
Until children have reached the age of the majority, they belong to their parents, not to the government.

Rituals, customs, traditions even if not barbaric – and I do consider circumcision barbaric regardless of whether it is performed on boys or girls – should not be allowed to violate the Convention on the Rights of the Child which set reasonable standards that 60 years later on still seem abomiably beyond implementation.

  7. .. There is a movement of Jews who are questioning circumcision, and working to end this abuse of children. The movement ranges from the Orthodox to the secular, and includes mothers, fathers, scholars, historians, medical professionals, activists, and intellectuals.
