Psalm 112 and Fearlessness

No theological doctoral thesis here, just a sharing of some wonderful promises. And the key is the fear of the Lord, which seems to be the condition required for receiving the psalm’s promised benefits.

Psalm 112

Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.
Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
their righteousness endures forever;
their horn will be lifted high in honor.
The wicked will see and be vexed,
they will gnash their teeth and waste away;
the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.

I can’t resist a little humor here. Lately, whenever I come to the line about the wicked gnashing their teeth, just one photo comes to mind:

Luis Gutierrez gnashes his teeth, and will waste away.

Always begin with the fear of the Lord.

We need a contest of Psalms, Psalter contest. Psalm 111:10, Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who obey His commandments will grow in wisdom.

God always comes through. Though sometimes He tests us to be sure. It’s a bit hard to not worry and put your trust in Him, but he’s bigger than any problems we have. Thanks for the post, TD! Always good to be reminded. Sometimes people don’t know what it means when it’s stated about ‘fearing the Lord’. I took it to mean that we must work on our own faults and character flaws because nobody else will and we can only improve ourselves; therefore when Jesus returns for all of our judgments we must be afraid because who knows if… Read more »

TD . . . . this is an excellent post! Thank you for this most important reminder.
I think when I read this scripture, that another way of interpreting the word “fear,” at least for most of us . . . . is “love.” If we will love The Lord, and keep His commandments, then we will not have to fear anything.

Fearing the Lord has a double meaning for me, there is the ‘fear’ which produces reverence, and obedience, through knowledge of his love and grace. Then there’s the other, which causes one to cower in dread and terror in anticipation of his displeasure.

In the last days , GOD is pointing out several lessons to mankind . He is allowing , and has even commissioned the devil , to break down all of our crutches and false supports . It is going to get much worse than very bad . We will not deliver ourselves by resorting to goodness – morality – law – justice – nor the constitution . THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST is the only salvation , and possible place of safety . There is no pre – tribulation rapture , but THE TRUE LORD JESUS will provide and offer… Read more »
