UPDATE: The AP just updated its report on this 2 minutes ago:

  • Under immense pressure, Pastor Jones has cancelled his plan to burn the Koran; but
  • the Ground Zero mosque’s mastermind, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, said he was surprised by the announcement that a deal was reached to relocate the mosque, and that he would not barter.

Fellowship of the Mind’s intrepid roving reporter Steve just alerted me to this breaking news:

The pastor is cancelling his plan to burn the Koran this Saturday, in exchange for the Ground Zero mosque’s relocation!

Antonio Gonzalez of the Associated Press reports from Gainesville, Florida:

The minister of a Florida church said he has canceled plans to burn copies of the Quran/Koran because the leader of a much-opposed plan to build an Islamic Center near ground zero has agreed to move its location. The agreement couldn’t be immediately confirmed.
The Rev. Terry Jones said Thursday that Americans oppose the mosque being built at the location and that Muslims do not want the Quran burned. He said instead of his plan to burn the books on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of 9/11, he will be flying to New York to speak to Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf about moving the mosque.

“We are, of course, now against any other group burning Qurans,” Jones said during a news conference. We would right now ask no one to burn Qurans. We are absolutely strong on that. It is not the time to do it.”
[…] Jones said Imam Muhammad Musri of the Islamic Society of Central Florida told him that officials would guarantee that the mosque would be moved. “I asked him three times, and I have witnesses,” Jones said. “If it’s not moved, then I think Islam is a very poor example of religion. I think that would be very pitiful. I do not expect that.”

Before we start celebrating, the AP has this note of caution:

A Florida imam says that no deal has been reached to move the site of a mosque at the site of ground zero in exchange for a Florida minister to call off plans to burn Qurans. Imam Muhammad Musri tells The Associated Press that what he offered was a meeting among the Rev. Terry Jones, the New York imam planning the Islamic center and himself to talk about the mosque location.
Musri is president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida. He says he told Jones that he does not believe the mosque should not be there and would do everything in his power to make sure it is moved.

Let’s hope a deal indeed is reached to cancel the Koran-burning in exchange for the relocation of the Cordoba mosque away from Ground Zero! Praise be to God!

  1. Who cares? The Koran burning and the ground zero mosque are really non-news stories put out there to distract the American public from the truth.
Does someone burning a Koran or building a mosque in NYC help the rising numbers of unemployment? How about our looming national debt? Does it change the fact that foreign countries are diversifying out of US Treasuries? How about illegals pouring in over borders and our federal our government refuses to enforce immigration laws? *BS* wars of aggression against countries that did nothing to us — wars with no end in sight? This is what we should be paying attention to, not some renegade pastor who is exercising his right to free speech.

  2. Regarding the stupid Ground Zero mosque. New Yorkers, you voted this liberal administration in, enjoy the mosque.

  3. Rauf should deal if he knows what’s best for everyone… unfortunately, like left/libtards, he’ll only think he does (and that us infidels are the great ignorant unwashed to be converted to salvation) and not go for it probably. (It ain’t over ’til September 12th, folks. Stay tuned.)

  4. Well I’m glad they cancelled the Koran burning, at least for the sake of our troops in the ME.
As for reaching a deal w/Imam, not holding my breath. He’s only trying to “build a bridge”….

  5. I posted this as a comment/postscript to Farenheit 911 as a response to this whacko quid pro quo.
So Terry the Pastor decides to keep the Holy-to-some Tome from the flames, BECAUSE Rauf the Imam says he will build his mosque elsewhere. Then Rauf the Imam says he never said that and the mosque will be built as planned. Terry the pastor says he is flying to New York to speak with the Imam.
Wanna bet that Terry never gets to see Rauf?
Rauf says that now he HAS to build the mosque there near Ground Zero because otherwise, if he moved it, Radical Muslims will flip out and bomb America/kill Americans!!!!!
    What a great big crock!!!!
Anyone that believes that is truly too stupid to take another breath!
What I want to know are where are the crazed Radical Christians who will now flip out and bomb mosques and murder Muslims now?
    crickets………

  6. Ayn Rand warned us but we never listented or understood. Now we must force the religious and the political crazies to account. I hope this is a good start. Political grievances can be undestood but not religious ones where there is no middle ground. A church is not a building made of bricks but it is a human body made in the image of its maker. This is the time where all religious oriented people need to re introspect.
Anyone that immigrates to the West, or buys properties there must not demand special rights that he or she can never dream of back home let alone avail. Most of us go to the West for high education and freedoms that we never get in our home countries. Taking advantage of such kind facility afforded to us in order to demand ‘freedoms’ denied to us at home is pathetic. And we must stop all wars to ensure everybody stays at home.

  7. But whose daft idea was it in the first place ?

  8. Petition for Recommitment to the Declaration of Independence, please pass on.
We the undersigned have understood the true meaning of the below document. Again we find ourselves suffering at the hands of TYRANTS. This petition is to recommit ourselves to the founding values, primary of all that LIBERTIES come from our CREATOR and not men. That being so, they only govern with the consent of THE PEOPLE. We are declaring independence from tyrants, the elite and those that wish harm to our REPUBLIC. Even coming out of silence the tyrants continue to plot our demise. WE THE PEOPLE declare to be free men and women and we will be lied no more. There is One that has all power, may you trust Him now.

We, the citizens of the United States of America, commit to support each of its agenda items and advocate on behalf of individual liberty, limited government, and economic freedom. We as patriots have many things we can do to return our country to the values that made or country great. You as an individual can sign and share this with friends. As a point of issue this should be referred to your local politicians for review. We have had a great impact as patriots in the last year with grass roots movements and at some point we will have candidates that are not of our Conservative values. This could be used as a tool for holding candidates and politicians presently in office to adhere to higher standards expected by Americans. I suggest you send this to all and expect a response and act accordingly.
