Obama gives 7 oil-rich Alaskan islands to Russia

Still doubt the message of the pic above? Take a look at the latest news that’s not reported by the establishment media.
Last month, Obama killed the job-producing Keystone XL Pipeline that, if allowed to proceed, would deliver 700,000 barrels a day of crude oil from Alberta’s oil sands to refineries along the Gulf of Mexico.
Joe Miller reports for WorldNetDaily that Obama’s war against U.S. energy independence continues unabated this month with a foreign-aid program that directly threatens Alaska’s sovereign territory. The Obama administration is giving away seven strategic, resource-laden Alaskan islands to the Russians.
Miller should know because he is an Alaskan. More than that, this is the same Joe Miller who was the 2010 Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate from Alaska. A West Point graduate, decorated combat veteran from the first Gulf War, and former judge, Miller holds a law degree from Yale and an advanced economics degree from the University of Alaska.

Miller continues:
The seven endangered islands in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea include one the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The Russians are also to get the tens of thousands of square miles of oil-rich seabeds surrounding the islands. The Department of Interior estimates billions of barrels of oil are at stake.
The State Department has undertaken the giveaway in the guise of a maritime boundary agreement between Alaska and Siberia. Astoundingly, our federal government itself drew the line to put these seven Alaskan islands on the Russian side. But as an executive agreement, it could be reversed with the stroke of a pen by President Obama or Secretary Clinton.
The agreement was negotiated in total secrecy. The state of Alaska was not allowed to participate in the negotiations, nor was the public given any opportunity for comment. This is despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition – but the State Department doesn’t seem to care.
The imperiled Arctic Ocean islands include Wrangell, Bennett, Jeannette and Henrietta. Wrangell became American in 1881 with the landing of the U.S. Revenue Marine ship Thomas Corwin. The landing party included the famed naturalist John Muir. It is 3,000 square miles in size.
Northwest of Wrangell are the DeLong Islands, named for George Washington DeLong, the captain of USS Jeannette. Also in 1881, he discovered and claimed these three islands for the United States. He named them for the voyage co-sponsor, New York City newspaper publisher James Gordon Bennett. The ship’s crew received a hero’s welcome back in Washington, and Congress awarded them gold medals.
In the Bering Sea at the far west end of the Aleutian chain are Copper Island, Sea Lion Rock and Sea Otter Rock. They were ceded to the U.S. in Seward’s 1867 treaty with Russia.
Now is the time for the Obama administration to stand up for U.S. and Alaskan rights and invaluable resources. The State Department’s maritime agreement is a loser – it gives us nothing in return for giving up Alaska’s sovereign territory and invaluable resources. We won the Cold War and should start acting like it.
The Obama administration must stop the giveaway immediately.
[…] This is not a new issue. In fact the Bush and Clinton administrations are directly at fault for the same inaction. A maritime agreement negotiated by the U.S. State Department set the Russian boundary on the other side of the disputed islands, but no treaty has ratified this action. Consequently, it is within the president’s power to stop this giveaway. The Alaska delegation’s failure to put pressure on the administration is inexplicable. State Department Watch, an organization that assisted with this article, has confronted each administration and is currently confronting the Obama administration — and has been met by silence. I’m hoping this piece will help reinvigorate efforts to stop this handover.”
H/t beloved Tina.
Here’s an addendum to Miller’s op-ed [Source]:
1. This giveaway of the 8 Alaskan islands via an agreement on maritime boundary between Alaska and Russia began in the Ford administration, spearheaded by Henry Kissinger.
2. Negotiations continued through the Carter, Reagan, and Bush Administrations with no public, Congressional, or State of Alaska’s input sought by the State Department.
3. An agreement was reached under George Bush the Elder’s administration in 1990, but it was an executive agreement, not a treaty (requiring the Senate’s approval) as it should be. Colin Powell was secretary of state.
4. In 1997, the Russian parliament (Duma) voted to void the agreement because they want even more concessions from the U.S. The Russian President hasn’t voided it, yet, and so secret negotiations between Russia and our State Department continue to this day.

And what are the useless cojones-less Republicans in Congress doing about this?

  1. Only one word for this–unbelievable!!!

  2. This does not bode well for the American Public. Robbing us before Obama’s Final Solution is enacted. America has become another Lodz Ghetto and Pale of Settlement rolled into one. Project 21.

  3. Whoever said the State Department was on OUR side ?
Suddenly the McCarthy Hearings begin to make a little more sense….

  4. go back to grazing america just a bump in the night

  5. I always think that nothing Mr. Soetero does will surprise me but I am appalled. Who approved this?

    • The Kremlin ordered Obama to release these seven oil rich islands to Mother Russia. Just like te Kremlin ordered the stopping of the pipeline. All Communists have a desire to crush America. And since the American public has been so dumbed down by the Communists (Liberals) we pay them to crush us. It hurts sooooo good!

  6. As much as I detest Obama, and everything he stands for,as an Alaskan for the last 34 years,I must point out the omissions on this issue. The root cause for this travesty lies not with Skippy, but with that other despicable anti American,Herr Henry Kissinger. In 1977,Kissinger,as Secretary of State, signed an “executive agreement” which is not a treaty, and which needs ratification by the Senate,so this has been an ongoing problem for about as long as I have lived here. The following link will take you to a site that gives the timeline on this issue.
PS–I still pray every day that Skippy comes down with a case of industrial strength hemorrhoids and has to leave office for “medical reasons”.LOL

  7. Article is a piece of crap.
Absolutely impossible for ANY American President to give away American territory without the approval of Congress.
Despite the author’s quoting someone with a Yale law degree, the person apparently never read the Constitution requiring that CONGRESS approve treaties.

    • tdxjudge, I thought it was absolutely impossible for ANY American President to take over a private business, for starters, to now telling the senate it was not in session. There are plenty “things” our current president has done illegally in between the two I listed…

    • Welll, let’s see…an AMERICAN President is ALSO supposed to be an American born citizen. I don’t see Congress doing anything about that travesity. Obama does as he pleases and there are no attempts to stop him and he should not even even be our President legally.

    • tdxjudge, don’t you watch the news?

  8. it’s ok sir, i no longer care what others think, i agree with wendy this does call for an uprising and hannibal is at the gates, but i have to ask just what is it that people expect from a congress and senate that in their own way have given america away? i believe that the american people will have to solve our problems, we can no longer depend on those in government, look at this issue this way,if congress and the senate gave a damn obama would not have given a part of america away because he would have been afraid to do so

  9. tdxjudge, read this again. “The State Department has undertaken the giveaway in the guise of a maritime boundary agreement between Alaska and Siberia.” It is agreement, not a treaty, with the consent of the President and is therefore legal. You would be correct if it were a treaty.
Everyone with knowledge of this pending action should be accountable. The phones at the White House comment line (202-456-1111) should be melted tomorrow morning and for the length of time needed to have Obama reverse this outrageous agreement. We should be mindful of his pre-election promise that he wouldn’t mind if gas went to $7.00 per gallong. But this is not just about oil, it is about actions without consultation that impact our sovereignty, and security. Americans, not just Alaskans, should be in the streets protesting this assault. Remember when you vote.

  10. i’m assuming these islands are inhabited by more than seals and walruses
the unbelievable obama administration strikes again what next hey lets give texas and new mexico back to mexico and while we’re at it lets give florida back to spain yeah obama and the terrritories bought in the louisiana purchase lets give them back to france. 57 states obama needs to go and congress needs to wake up and smell the coffee stop obama

  11. He’s just redistributing the wealth, exactly what he campaigned on….. he has to earn that Nobel Prize, some way.

  12. The enemy within! “Their” man in the White House!

  13. Black Whore in the White House.

  14. More Carter / Clinton legacies: Wrangel has been settled by Russians since the 1920s, and America officially recognized it as Russian in 1977 and 1994. It wasn’t included in the Alaska purchase but it was claimed by a U.S. revenue cutter about 15 years later.

  15. You don't need to know my name

This article by Joe Miller conveniently neglects to mention all of the Republican involvement in the secret negotiations, signed agreements, support for the giveaway, etc. What about Kissinger, Ford, Reagan, G.H.W. Bush, James Baker, who were all in office while these secret negotiations and signed agreements were supposedly transpiring? Miller doesn’t give a history of the situation because it doesn’t suit his agenda. Miller starts off blaming Obama in the title of his article, “Obama Giveaway.” He blames him for postponing Keystone XL, or “effectively killed the pipeline” as he says. He states Obama has an “apparent war” against U.S. energy independence and “Obama’s State Department is giving away seven ….. Alaskan islands.” Then Miller omits pertinent information as to when and how and most importantly, WHO negotiated agreements, boundaries, etc concerning these islands. Who is Miller insinuating committed these dastardly deeds if not Obama and his administration? This controversy has been going on for about 35 years, starting when Kissinger negotiated with Russia starting in January of 1977. I looked at several maps and all of them placed all of these islands on the Russian side of the maritime boundary that we agreed to years ago. None of these islands were included in the Alaska purchase, read the treaty. All are in close proximity to the Russian shore, far away from our Alaskan mainland. Just because some American landed on any of the islands well over 100 years ago and “claimed” them for the U.S., doesn’t mean they belong to us. Do you seriously believe Russia didn’t consider them their property already? They are all just off their mainland! Since the negotiations were supposedly secret, we don’t know what we might have gotten in return, if anything. After researching this situation at great length, I see no hope of claiming possession of these islands. I couldn’t find a single map that showed any of these islands belonging to Alaska or the United States. I couldn’t find a government website that listed any of these islands as U.S. possessions. All the maps showed these islands as Russian property. I don’t believe we inhabit a single one of these islands in any way. The only info I could find on Americans inhabiting any island was 13 or so people about 90 years ago. The Russians removed them and I can’t find any info suggesting the U.S. complained about an invasion on our soil. If Bush 1, Bush 2 and Dick “Halliburton” Cheney, all oilmen, couldn’t find a way to claim these islands while they were in office, I see no hope, because I’d bet money they looked into it. This is just another wild goose chase, made to enrage those who just need any reason to vilify President Obama.

  16. AMERICA NEEDS TO DRILL HERE-DRILL NOW****** to hell with the mid-east. Russia is buying up Silicon-Valley,building steel mills in Michigan, buying mining rights in North Dakota-WTF?? Go back to your own backyard. Get out of the United States of America!–take everyone in D.C. with you,as they have proven to be bought and paid for Anti-Americans. We’ll throw in the Muzzies for free, take them too.

  17. The Kremlin has guranteed Obama he will be re-elected for making this deal, plus lots of pocket change.

  19. People, please look into the FACTS behind this issue before posting your conspiracy theories.Skippy Obozo has committed enough felonious acts against our republics constitution that we need not make any up.This issue came about in 1977,and not through any act of o’bummer. If we,as conservatives, wish to sway the opinions of the liberal left towards the conservative side, posting half baked assertions about him does not help us in any way..Then again,if he,or the dem controlled senate were to ratify this travesty of an “executive agreement” and legitimize it by creating a “treaty’,then it would be a long legal war between the sovereign state of Alaska and the anal orifices infesting DC,A battle that Alaska would win.

    • WildBill,
It’s Joe Miller who wrote the article. If you disagree with his assertions, please take the matter up with Miller. Here’s his Facebook page:

      • standupamericaus.org Major General Paul Vallely’s site has a good article also.

      • Dr. Eowyn
My post was not directed to you,but to the people who are taking this issue too far.Unfortunately I voted for Joe miller in our last Senatorial election as an alternative candidate to Lisa Murkowski, who many of us Alaskans consider to be a RINO.After the election cycle Mr Miller was exposed as an opportunist who, to put it politely,,is loose with the truth. If you considered my post to be a rebuke of ANY of your postings,i extend my deepest apologies as you were not the intended recipient.I am happy to have found a group of like minded Christian conservatives,of which, you seem to be the well informed leader.Kudos on your site.

        • Dear Wild Bill:
Thank you for your kind words. My previous comment to you was motivated by my being baffled as to what the truth is concerning these islands. I had assumed that what Miller wrote is true. Since you believe otherwise, perhaps you can point us to sources and evidence that show him to be wrong.
Thank you and God bless. 😀

          • Dear Dr. Eowyn
This link isTo the best of my knowledge,to an apolitical site that monitors the state departments activities for actual, versus implied activities. As you are well aware there are way too many “well informed ” blog sites that will “print” stories without vetting them.Joseph Farah and World Net Daily, who printed Millers story, I have followed since 1999,and I believe in Mr. Farah’s veracity, but,I do not believe that he is responsible for this story, but rather an enthusiastic staff writer with a little too much enthusiasm in looking for a good lead story and was awed a little too much with Mr.Millers media created credentials.I sincerely hope this will put and end to this “breaking story”.

            • Thank you, Wild Bill, for the link! 😀
I just looked at the site:
              1. This giveaway of the 8 Alaskan islands via an agreement on maritime boundary between Alaska and Russia began in the Ford administration, spearheaded by Henry Kissinger.
              2. Negotiations continued through the Carter, Reagan, and Bush Administrations with no public, Congressional, or State of Alaska input sought by the State Department.
              3. An agreement was reached in 1990, but it was an Executive Agreement by Bush the Elder’s administration, not a treaty as it should be. Colin Powell was secretary of state.
              4. In 1997, the Russian parliament (Duma) voted to void the agreement because they want even more concessions from the U.S. The Russian President hasn’t voided it, yet, and so secret negotiations between Russia and our State Department continue to this day.
None of the above contradicts what Joe Miller wrote in his op-ed piece for WorldNetDaily. In fact Miller wrote “This is not a new issue. In fact the Bush and Clinton administrations are directly at fault for the same inaction. A maritime agreement negotiated by the U.S. State Department set the Russian boundary on the other side of the disputed islands, but no treaty has ratified this action. Consequently, it is within the president’s power to stop this giveaway.”
Miller’s op-ed tries to alert the American people to this giveaway so that we can tell our reps in Congress to void this agreement with Russia. If Miller can be faulted, it is for not being detailed enough on how past administrations, esp. that of Bush the Elder, were complicit.
To conclude, Miller did not misrepresent the facts. I stand by his op-ed.

        • Ahhh….I think that was the sweetest most sincere apology ever! You have a way with words! 🙂

  20. A President can get away with *exactly* as much of this kind of nonsense as Congress permits (by *not* objecting)…
Joe Miller’s exclusive report to WND is the real deal… He’s a sharp solidly down-to-earth guy. You’ll have a hard time faulting his analysis!
Transparency note: Joe’s Dad is an active member of our local group here in Manhattan KS, the Flint Hills TEA Party, for whom Joe was a Special Guest Speaker at our 2011 Tax Day TEA Party Rally…

REALITY CHECK^^^^^,In case you failed geography,Kansas is nowhere near Alaska and we are different from you,we still bekeve in God and the constitution.Furthermore, as far as Mr Millers qualifications concerning Alaskan issues,he falls far short in the area of veracity..Mr Millers ability to represent Alaskan values is in doubt here in Americas last bastion of freedom..His quest to become the second senatorial voice as a representative of our state failed because he is full of bovine fecal matter,In closing,I would like to add that I voted for Miler in our last election cycle and am glad my vote did not count.I,like you, were taken in by an ambitious ass wipe with a political agenda.Miller has no future in Alaska unless he gives up the practice of “law” and pursues a legitimate means of income.Perhaps Micky D”s is a good place for him.
Tell your children,do not trust Joe Miller,
      God Bless to All

      • Wild Bill,
There’s no need to hurl insults at DeepWheat. You’re better than this. DeepWheat is expressing his opinion on this issue, just as you are. Since you think he’s wrong on Joe Miller and the matter of these Alaskan islands, rebutt him with FACTS instead!

  21. You guys haven’t seen anything yet ….wait until John Kerry brings the the Law Of The Sea Treaty to the house floor for a vote. That document will basically give all offshore assets to a UN sanctioned party to decide who will be able to mine any resources and they will charge those people a tax. so all revenues the US would make from a oil company mining oil offshore but within the two hundred mile limit will lose all taxes and sovereignty to those assets.

  22. The history of the LOST treaty as it iscalled goes back to the Reagan years. Reagan was totally against it stating that it would give the sovereignty of the nation away. Since then it has come up several times (Bush, Clinton, Bush jr years) only to be shelved again….Bush Jr made that document a priority and thank god it didn’t get passed congress. What we have here is a government that seems to be backdooring our constitution to make it easier for a New World Order. We all should be writing our Congressmen and Senators to plead them not to ratify it.

  23. {The Keystone XL Pipeline would’ve endangered countless ecosystems, including at least 2 Soverine American Indian Reservations; ta say nothin’ of the lower grade product that would’ve been gained fer exhorbitantly hi production costs.} I do hope this island thing’ll be solved, sensibly, tho! ~ Faramir

Perhaps you are unaware of the approx.55,000 miles of crude oil pipelines that already crisscross America. Many of these crude trunk lines are already crossing these (sic)Soverine American Indian Reservations. The reason Obozo vetoed the keystone project had nothing to do with environmental concerns and everything to do with mollifying his radical environmentalist voting base at the expense of American jobs and energy independence from the middle East. All in the quest for votes.

  24. Did anybody else hear about the new tax on the big corporations’ money over seas. They said he is lowering taxes for corps. from 35% to 28% to cover up the bigger issue. He is setting up global tax system. I heard Stu Varney say this on Megyn Kelly(Fox News) today, but the video isn’t up yet.

  25. Miranda
Have you also heard about the new federal real estate tax of 3.8% that goes into effect in 2013,conveniently after the next election?.If you sell your home after Jan 1 2013 you will pay this new tax that is in the Obamacare law.
    Wild Bill

    • How do they pass that in ObamaCARE? It’s scary what they can pass w/o the American ppl knowing!

      • Miranda
As Pelosi said in reference to the Obamacare law,”We have to pass this to know whats in it”.This little gem is but one of many unpleasant surprises contained in this bill, which was never fully read before passage. If not rescinded, this 1900 plus page travesty will turn America and our traditional values upside down.It is too bad that liberal/progressives are allowed to breed let alone vote.
        Wild Bill

        • Totally agree about letting them breed! Do they (liberals)really think that ppl like Gates would support him taking away their money if there was not something fishy goin on? They are so stupid!

  26. Wild Bill
I thought of that after I replied to you! So government can just pass whatever they want! Why are we not hearing about this in GOP Debates?

    • Miranda
With all the “moderators” being mainstream media liberal “talking heads’ it is not too surprising that the subject has not come up.What is worrisome is that not one of the candidates has brought the subject up on their own.

      • WildBill~
I guess that is what I meant…maybe that is why everyone is having a hard time getting behind one of them. I like Santorum, but I am scared he cannot beat Obama. (Which it is in God’s hands no matter what.) I am sick of them talking about personal lives on the debates and attacking each other. I want them to talk about all the other issues that Obama has put into place. So you are thinking there is a lot more B*lllSh*t in this ObamaCare package coming at us sooner or later? Fabulous!
They are trying to say that this global tax on corps. Is about bringing the companies home….but they are full of it….all the companies will do is pull all the way out of the U.S. What I cannot figure out…they know it will force the companies to completely pull out of the U.S., so what is really fueling this? What are the real motives here?

        • Miranda
I was backing Cain until he dropped out,so I will have to settle for Santorum or whomever the conservative candidate is.As to who is,and was backing the globalist one world agenda?,FDR ,Carter,Bush 1 and 2,the Clintons,George Soros, the UN and the current POtuS,(notice the upper case) currently infesting the oval office. That is just a few who believe that a global government versus sovereign countries would be best for the world,(that is with them in charge and pulling the strings)

  27. An Alaskan patriot

These islands have NEVER been part of Alaska or the U.S. If Joe Miller wasn’t a Kansas carpetbagger, he would know that. Or maybe he DOES know that, but it just doesn’t serve his agenda to disclose it. Read the purchase treaty yourself:
And have a look at the 1867 map that shows the purchased lands, shaded in pink, on the east side of the line that runs diagonally through the Behring (Bering) Sea:

    • If it’s as clear-cut as you say, then over what exactly have the United States and the Soviet Union (later Russia) been negotiating all these years?

  28. False Alarm misinformation. The US gave up any claim to the Wrangel islands under George Shultz, Reagans Sec. of State.

  29. Dr Eowyn,
As long as there are Communist Moles in the Whitehouse there will always be negotions over what belongs to the United States of America. The Democrat Party is the ‘Trojan Horse’ of Communism. The D-Rats have been pumping the Media full Disinformation, in concert with the Communist/Socialists ever since FDR.
Thank you for your good, honest, factual words. Keep up the good work. There will always be some static/trash talk around.

  30. Ed
You are full of it,and I do not mean Knowledge. The agreement was signed when Her Kissinger was sec state in 1977 not Schultz,I fear that you sir are a sad example of public education.
    Wild Bill

To put this whole episode into perspective,a failed politician,Joe Miller, has brought up an old bull sh*t story regarding the loss of American sovereign land to political whim.If one looks at a map,one can see that the Islands in question are off the mainland of Russia, not Alaska.Come on ,I detest Obama as much as the rest of our THINKING population, but,we need not MAKE UP stories about his inability to lead a nation of our stature.Obama,if vetted, would be turned down as unqualified for the position of junior shift supervisor at any Taco Bell in the US.
    Wild Bill

  32. He’s giving away our land.

  33. He making gifts to our Communist enemies to pad his campaign pockets Perhaps O and the Russians are planning Health Care death camps for those who disagree with Human Bondage.

  34. Upon doing a little research, I do see where there was an agreement written in 1977. However, I have to wonder why does just about every President since the 90’s have their names attached to this agreement. Why is this an ongoing discussion between America and Russia.
This Controversy gives the appearance that Russia is bringing the issue up with each and every Administration that comes into office.
Furthermore, My Thought is if Russia felt or knew for fact without doubt that they had the rights to these islands, Russia would not even be discussing it with America and asking America to rewrite the Maritime Boundries. The fact that Russia is requesting America to make the change would prompt the question of Russia’s doubt of ownership.
If Russia knew for fact that these territories rightfully belonged to Russia and America was encroaching on their territory, Wouldn’t Russia be consulting or taking the issue up with The World Court or U.N. to resolve the issue once and for all?

  35. Russia has found the weakest point in America’s armor……………President Obama.

  36. He gave away our security, our money, our young servicemember’s lives, our freedom, our healthcare, why not a little more property while no one pays attention. Why isn’t this on the news, any news?

  37. He’s the damn anti-Christ!

  38. The Western world seems to be full of traitors who will sell out their countries for a bowl of Commie Lentils. Woe unto them.

  39. You people sure spill out a lot of Christian love. It just shines. All you need now is a turban. You’re also very ignorant if you really believe this crap.

  40. only one solution to the madness that is the current obama administration
    O.M.G obama must go

  41. i propose a solution lets throw in obama along with the 7 islands. along with not 1 but 7 islands if you act now russia we will throw in the obamas at no extra charge so if you act now you get the 7 islands barack and michelle and the two daughters such a deal hurry supplies are limited

  42. How much CHANGE was that?

  43. george rydlinski

this is all very misleading! go check out the facts!

  44. America is Spiritually lost. Therefore, politically, physically and in every other aspect, lost. God created her. We abandoned His principles. Only He can revive her. We must pray for forgiveness and mercy for ourselves and our nation and keep our eyes on Him.

  45. These tiny islands were never part of the Alaska Purchase in the first place.

  46. This is author/columnist David Lawrence Dewey
You have very inaccurate information on your website that President Obama gave Alaskan Islands to Russia.
President Obama had nothing to do with it and did not do it. President Bush was actually involved in this in 2008.
Journalists and people who publish and post things on their websites have a duty to research and fact check information before they publish an article or provide a link to the disformation.
It completely amazes me to this day how much of these type of articles are circulated on many websites which have ARE NOT factual and they have been twisted by the person writing for a specific agenda. In this case, the person that originally wrote this has some sort of vendetta against President Obama, so they twisted the facts to make President Obama be the culprit and look bad when in fact this issue occured when President Bush was President.
Trained journalists are taught to verify their information with at least two sources.
You need to run a retraction and correct this !
By the way, this is not some sort of ploy to help Obama. I am registered Independent !
    Here are the facts:
    ~David Lawrence Dewey
Distorted fact twisted email circulating that
President Obama Gave Russia Oil Rich Alaskan Islands.
Here are the facts ! This is totally not factual or true !
A look at the map will give the reader of the motion of the frozen “Alaskan” islands under discussion. All are far closer to the Russian mainland than to the Alaskan mainland. All lie on the Russian side of the U.S.-Russia maritime boundary set by a treaty that the U.S. Senate ratified overwhelmingly more than two decades ago, after being signed by President George H.W. Bush, and with the support of both of Alaska’s senators.
The largest, Wrangel Island (in Russian, Ostrov Vrangelya), is named for the Russian explorer Ferdinand P. Wrangel, who heard of the island from Siberian natives as early as 1820. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, Wrangel did not land on it while mapping the Siberian coast that year. The first European to sight it may have been the British explorer Capt. Henry Kellett, who in 1849 discovered and landed on nearby Herald Island, and saw Wrangel in the distance.
The uninhabited Wrangel Island was sighted by U.S. vessels in 1867 and 1881, but not settled. A Canadian explorer named Vilhjalmur Stefansson and survivors of a disastrous expedition reached the island in 1914. But when Stefansson later tried to claim Wrangel for Canada without authorization, he caused an international incident, infuriating the Canadian government. Then in 1926 the Soviet Union staked a claim to the island and settled a few native families there.
According to a 1990 story by the Associated Press, Wrangel and four other uninhabited islands were surveyed in 1881 by a U.S. Navy commander, and for a time were listed in the “District of Alaska” by the U.S. Geological Survey. That’s about the extent of justification for calling them “Alaskan.” Neither the U.S., Britain nor Canada has disputed the Soviet (and now Russian) claim to Wrangel. TheU.S. State Department says Wrangel and the others weren’t included in the U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867, and “they have never been claimed by the United States.”
Nevertheless, a crusading California activist named Carl Olson, of Woodland Hills, Calif., made it his business to claim that the islands are “100 percent American,” as the AP said in 1990. The organization Olson founded, “State Department Watch, Ltd,” is still pressing that argument today. (The group is a nonprofit advocacy organization that reported taking in $2.4 million in 2010 but spent most of it on fundraising, according to its most recent IRS Form 990. It paid Olson an $80,000 salary, made grants of $51,000 to the “1776 Tea Party” of Laguna Woods, Calif., and $9,500 to the “Minuteman Project, Inc.” of Aliso Viejo, Calif. But nearly $2 million was reported going for postage and printing. The group reports that it hired Virginia-based WJM Associates, a fundraising and marketing firm that lists several Republican and conservative groups as clients.)
Despite Olson’s objections, the Senate ratified a treaty establishing the current maritime boundary between the U.S. and the Soviet Union (now Russia) on Sept. 16, 1991. The vote was a lopsided 86 to 6. Alaska’s senators, the late Ted Stevens and Frank Murkowski, both Republicans, voted in favor of ratification.
But voting against the treaty were Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Chuck Grassley of Iowa and four other Republicans, led by the late Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina. During a very brief debate, Helms said he was fighting to “protect the status” of Wrangel Island and four others: Herald, Bennett, Henrietta and Jeannette Islands.
The treaty did not specifically cede sovereignty over the islands to the Soviets (which the U.S. wasn’t disputing anyway), and merely clarified the location of the maritime boundary to settle squabbles over fishing and undersea mineral rights. Nevertheless, Helms said he would vote against it because “I doubt that the State Department will make use of the opportunity to press U.S. claims to the five islands — even though the right to do so is preserved.”
(To read the full debate in the Congressional Record, search the Library of Congress Thomas website for the 102nd Congress, and enter “S13036? to bring up the first page.)
And sure enough, no president or secretary of state since has shown any interest in disputing the Soviet/Russian claim to Wrangel Island or the others. Which brings us to the present accusation that President Obama is somehow giving away something the U.S. has never claimed to own. How can that be?
For one thing, the maritime boundary treaty has never been ratified by the Russians, which is required for it to take full force. By the time the U.S. Senate had ratified the treaty (signed by the Soviets the previous year), the Soviet Union was near collapse. Shortly afterward, the Russian Federation notified the U.S. government by diplomatic note that it would continue to abide by the terms of the agreement on a provisional basis, however.
Ironically, in view of claims of a U.S. “giveaway,” it is the Russians who have sought to renegotiate the terms of the boundary treaty on grounds that their side gave up too much to the United States. Ahistory of the matter, by Vlad M. Kaczynski of the Warsaw School of Economics, published in the May 1, 2007, edition of the Russian Analytical Digest, details why the new Russian Federation refused to ratify the treaty:
Kaczynski, 2007: Many accuse Gorbachev and Shevardnadze of ceding Russia’s rightful fishing areas in their haste to negotiate a deal for signature at the 1990 White House Summit. “Russian parliamentarians understood perfectly well that the agreement infringed upon Russia’s interests and therefore the document has never been ratified by the Russian parliament,” these critics say. Other Russian officials have voiced their opposition to the treaty not only because of lost fishing opportunities, but also due to the loss of potential oil and gas fields and naval passages for submarines.
Content to hang on to what the Soviet negotiators gave up, the U.S. State Department says, “The United States has no intention of reopening discussion of the 1990 Maritime Boundary Agreement.” However, since the treaty has yet to be ratified by the Russians, Olson and some on the right argue that the U.S. should still be pressing claims to Wrangel (Olson prefers to spell it “Wrangell” with two “l’s”) and other islands and rocks.
The whole business was raised anew in an opinion piece published Feb. 16 on the conservative site World Net Daily (notable for promoting dubious claims about the president’s birthplace). It was written by Joe Miller, the Tea Party favorite who defeated Sen. Lisa Murkowski (daughter of former Sen. Frank Murkowski) in the 2010 Republican Senate primary, only to see Lisa Murkowski go on to win the general election handily as a write-in candidate.
“Obama’s State Department is giving away seven strategic, resource-laden Alaskan islands to the Russians,” Miller wrote. “We won the Cold War and should start acting like it.” The following day, Miller posted an addendum to his piece conceding that he was raising “an old issue” and that he had been “assisted with this article” by Olson’s State Department Watch.
It is an old issue indeed. In fact, World Net Daily itself published a July 29, 2008, article critical of the State Department for the “island giveaway.” Of course, George W. Bush — not Obama — was president at the time. (The Bush administration’s official Arctic Region Policy stated that the U.S. would abide by the 1990 maritime agreement and would continue to urge the Russian Federation to ratify it.)
And we’re not sure why Miller mentions only seven islands when Olson always has insisted the U.S. has a claim to eight. But whatever the count, it is simply false to claim that Obama is “giving away” islands to which no U.S. president has asserted a claim for more than 85 years, if ever.

    • Mr. Dewey:
Did you communicate your outrage, disdain, and corrections to Joe Miller, who wrote the original essay for WND (WorldNetDaily)? If not, why is that? Instead you come here to scold a little citizens’ blog with no resources, owned and staffed by patriots who volunteer their time and labor, at no pay (unlike you), because they love America.
On top of it, I — the author of this post — did make the extra effort to find other sources and appended an addendum to Miller’s op-ed, in which I explicitly stated that this giveaway began under George Bush the Elder’s administration, as well as detailed subsequent developments. But you obviously couldn’t be bothered to read that because if you had, you wouldn’t come here to bully us.
Until you get Joe Miller and WND to correct or retract his piece, I see no reason to retract this post.
Oh, by the way, I’m not a toady for the GOP. Like you, I’m a registered nonpartisan Independent.

  47. reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally need to get your facts STRAIGHT before you post stuff like this. go back about 20 years and read the U.S.-Russia maritime boundary set by a treaty that the U.S. Senate ratified overwhelmingly more than two decades ago, after being signed by President George H.W. Bush, and with the support of both of Alaska’s senators. come on people..quit being sheep!

    • Lori,
I suggest you reeeeeeeeeally need to actually read my post before you write your scolding comment. My post includes everything you mentioned.
