NY Times (2/14): The End of Snow? Reality (1/15): Winter weather bringing NYC state to a halt

From The New York Times(2/14):
“In the last 47 years, a million square miles of spring snow cover has disappeared from the Northern Hemisphere. Europe has lost half of its Alpine glacial ice since the 1850s, and if climate change is not reined in, two-thirds of European ski resorts will be likely to close by 2100.

The same could happen in the United States, where in the Northeast, more than half of the 103 ski resorts may no longer be viable in 30 years because of warmer winters. As far for the Western part of the country, it will lose an estimated 25 to 100 percent of its snowpack by 2100 if greenhouse gas emissions are not curtailed — reducing the snowpack in Park City, Utah, to zero and relegating skiing to the top quarter of Ajax Mountain in Aspen. The facts are straightforward: The planet is getting hotter.

It’s easy to blame the big oil companies and the billions of dollars they spend on influencing the media and popular opinion. But the real reason is a lack of knowledge. I know, because I, too, was ignorant until I began researching the issue for a book on the future of snow.

If greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise — they grew 41 percent between 1990 and 2008 — then snowfall, winter and skiing will no longer exist as we know them by the end of the century.

This is no longer a scientific debate. It is scientific fact. The greatest fear of most climate scientists is continued complacency that leads to a series of natural climatic feedbacks — like the melting of the methane-rich permafrost of Arctic Canada.”

From the NYDaily News (1/15):

“Get off the roads, get off the streets, get off the sidewalks. That was the order from Mayor de Blasio on Monday as a potentially historic blizzard bore down on New York City and threatened to bury the city under more than 2 feet of snow.

“What you are going to see in a few hours is something that hits very hard and very fast,” de Blasio said. “This is most likely to be one of the largest blizzards in the history of New York City. People need to be ready.”

More than 1,400 flights in and out of the metro area’s three major airports were canceled Monday morning, according to the website FlightAware. United Airlines started scaling back operations well before the storm appeared and canceled all flights Tuesday at Newark, LaGuardia and JFK, as well as Boston and Philadelphia, a spokeswoman said.

The blizzard warning was issued for a 250-mile stretch of the Northeast, stretching all the way from Philadelphia past Boston and up the Maine coast.”

  1. “This is no longer a scientific debate. It is scientific fact.”
To the staff global-warming pimps of the New York Times, I hope those words stick in your collective throat as you freeze and get stuck in standstill traffic in the blizzard.
    Excellent post, DCG!

    • What gets me is the overreaction by the govt agencies to snow in the winter (and it turned out to be a lot less). They ordered roads closed, declared states of emergencies all for two feet of snow. Guess it’s a good way to test how much power they have to instill fear in the masses , control them, and make them fearful of being adaptive to challenging conditions (Also to hype the global warming BS). It’s a wonder previous generations survived /sarc

      • When I was in Reno during the Winter of 92,the City and surrounding area used this as their reaction to the heavy snowfall. More plows/longer hours of operation, some stores were open another hour per day, people with cars were encouraged to carpool with neighbors with Four Wheel Drives, give yourself an extra hour to get to your jobs or appointments.
I lived up near Stead AFB,North of Reno, and worked in Moundhouse, about 5 miles East of Carson City. I commuted every morning to be there by 7AM. Glad my tool boxes were in my truck-they gave me enough ballast to get around in snow. After the first snow,I took one day off to dig my truck out and dig a trail to the nearest plowed street. I passed the snow plows on 395 almost every morning;it was easy because the fast lane was untouched at that time, the truck (’57 GMC 1/2 ton pick up) handled that just fine. Getting home was a little dicey. All the slush on the roads would be freezing-VERY slick. I had to get a SERIOUS run at the grade coming out of Sparks going North on 395 to get over the top.
        Good days!

  2. I live in Minnesota and our snow cover is very thin this year…..YEA!!!! It’s something that just happens from time to time and has been for years before the tinfoil headed liberals decided to blame everything on heating oil and cow flatulence. No worries, there is still plenty of winter for us to be walloped yet, I hope I’m gone somewhere if it does come. ⛄️ ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

  3. Northerngirl, I’m borrowing some of your Minnesota snowflakes to report from Massachusetts. ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

  4. “The facts are straightforward: The planet is getting hotter.”
Yep-and in a while it’ll get COLDER. THEN,it’ll get HOTTER. That’s been happening since the beginning of recorded time. It’ll KEEP on happening,IF the Climate Change folks don’t figure out how to screw THAT up too. (That’s just NATURE-lets try to foul it up!)

  5. Snow falls in New York, liberals freak out.

  6. Watching the weather quacks last night on TV with all their dire warnings made me think all the hype from 1970 was finally about to come true!(snerk!)
I was in the 5th grade back then and still vividly remember just how awful and scary the great “global cooling” events that were being predicted then were going to be and how we were all going to freeze to death in the coming Ice Age…!
I really wish I had kept whatever propaganda I was given then as I can’t recall if it was supposed to be a natural phenomenon or if they used the now infamous phrase “man-made” to describe why it was about to happen.
But yes, I DO believe in climate change…
… whatever the climate is now, wait long enough and it WILL change. Just like it has every Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. It’s been happening for what-probably millions of years now. Nothing ‘man-made’ about it whatsoever. And there’s not very much (if any) that man can do about it, either! It’s just how God in His infinite wisdom created it.
Do a bit of research and you’ll discover this sort of BS has been going on longer than most all other hoaxes put together. As P.T. Barnum said-there is indeed a sucker born every minute. And there’s a con man just waiting to fleece him…
